This book is one of the classics in the field, published in a time, when looking at post-colonial literatures was still a new idea. Accordingly, the authors provide a lot of basic structural work and try to set out possible lines of inquiry into the yet uncharted waters. After a definition of what constitutes post-colonial literature, the core issues of hegemony, place and language are set out. The groundwork done, the book looks more closely at possible models of critical analysis of post-colonial literatures. As a next step, textual strategies of post-colonial writing are scrutinised, focusing on strategies of finding a non-hegemonic style. The third main section then provides case studies of various novels of different geographical origins, in which the theoretical concepts are applied and tested. Finally, after considering indigenous literary theories, the authors try to find ways of grasping post-colonial literature with existing critical tools. Quite simply,. essential reading that provides a very good introduction into on of the central themes of current literary studies. (Dies ist eine Amazon.de an der Uni-Studentenrezension.)

Despite its "trendy" title -- very postmodern, combining Salman Rushdie with George Lucas and Star Wars -- and the multiple authorship, this survey is a very readable, clearly articulated consideration of the central problems and issues in post-colonial scholarship. The authors write seamlessly as one, not as a committee, though it is clear that they combine complementary areas of expertise. The consideration of feminist scholarship was perhaps the most disappointing: unlike the other analyses, it seemed desultory. The book is also to be commended for being not merely a conscientious account of post-colonial research, but also a thoughtful and fair-minded critique as well.

Sehr gutes Buch. Die Autoren haben einen sehr guten Schreibstil und auch inhaltlich überzeugt es. Selbstverständlich ist es nicht das einfachste Buch, es ist durchaus anspruchsvoll, dadurch aber auch sehr lehrreich.
