Yet, do the math for the author
Dr. Burns just puts in layman's terms the technical texts by his teachers, Drs Aaron and Judith Beck (also brief and vague). Throughout the book he tells you how "wrong" YOU are in being depressed.
He also keeps throwing kisses at Dr. Beck and at himself (need for self-assurance?).
It has been clinically demonstrated that depression is due to a...

5.0 von 5 Sternen Excellent cognitive-behavioral therapy for depression, 9. Juli 1999
Von Ein Kunde
A very useful book. While depression has been associated with chemical changes in the brain, there is no proof that depression is caused by these changes. It could equally well be that depression is what is making the changes occur, and that we can in fact manage our depression without drugs.
I have personally found this to be the case. With the help of this book I have been able to stop taking antidepressants. I find dealing with the issues that caused my depression to be much more useful than medically treating the symptoms. David Burns offers practical methods of dealing with your sadness and despair without having to endlessly dredge up your past. You can acknowledge your past and its unfairness, while dealing with your depression in the present.
Cognitive-behavioral therapy is the only type of therapy that has been proven useful in dealing with depression. Burns offers an excellent example, and a much cheaper one than medication for those without health insurance (and a safer one for those with -- after all, the newer drug therapies haven't been around long enough yet for doctors to know about long-term side effects).
I recommend this book most highly.

This book and the Workbook, by Burns will enable you to recognize and then prevent the thoughts that lead to depression. There is also helpful information on medication. If you experience depression, buy this book. If your marriage is also affected, you may also want to buy, "Love Is Not Enough" by Aaron Beck MD

5.0 von 5 Sternen A must for anyone suffering..., 12. September 1999
Von Ein Kunde
As a woman of 5 children, I needed help so desparetly that words can't evern describe. I had anxiety, depression, and was afraid to answer the phone or the door. I could not leave my house. I wanted so bad to do things for myself and for my kids, but had to depend on my dh for everything. Then one day I came across someone talking about this book on a message board, and I thought I'd give it a try. I did, and I can't tell you how greatful I am to Dr. Burns for writing this book. Not only did it do me good by feeling emotionally better, but it gave me the strength I needed to get help for myself. I no longer have depression or anxiety. I can go anywhere I want to now and enjoy my life the way I deserved to all along. And I could have never gotten to where I am now without the help of this great book. I am not going to lead you to believe that the book itself will change your life, but it WILL lead you in the right direction, and if you really want to feel better, it will help you do just that. Please do yourself a favor, and the people in your life as well, and pick up a copy today. You wont be sorry!

5.0 von 5 Sternen Good Technical Information about Chemical Depression, 12. April 1999
Von Ein Kunde
For me depression has always been strictly (and seriously) a chemical issue combined with the self doubt that what I was going through was really happening and not my imagination. Half of this book is about behavioral and attitude adjustment, BUT a good deal of it is very informative advice about drugs that are available. Since I did not respond to Prozac, I was very happy that this covered all the other drugs including usual dosage ranges. Also, I really was happy to see the "depression test", that standard multiple choice test that measures the degree to which you are depressed. In many ways this helps validate that what you are going through is a serious illness (you see that your high score on this test is definitely not the norm). Also, the interviews he includes with other patients tends to bolster the spirit and sense of community with other sufferers. Finally the tone he takes seems very warm and even loving and when you are in an isolated and pathetic and beaten down state it really lifts your spirits.

I'm not a person who's used to giving 5* reviews for books; it happens too frequently to give accurate pespective.
However, this is an excellent book. I've had moderate depression for ten years. This book gives the effefcts of depression and practical, long-term ways to deal with it. It gives you an inside perspective of how depression affects the way you look at the world.
The thesis of this book is that by changing the way you interpret events, you can change your mood.
If you give this book two weeks and stick to it for six months, you will experience a significant improvement in your level of happiness.
The writing is very well done and explanatory. You will develop automatic techniques that change and improve your attitude. I highly reccommend this bookm and its siblings by Dr. Burns.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Not a suicidal day more, drug free, and happy, 16. September 1999
Von Ein Kunde
I went to a doctor in November and begged for pills because I was living day by day, not knowing when I would finish my life. I had been in therapy for a year and had been depressed since late childhood. I thought I was just that way and I would have to depend on meds for the rest of my life. Determined not to do so, I read Feeling Good in February and follwed the exercises. By July (1 year earlier than treatment was scheduled to last) I stopped medication and practiced my newly learned skills from this book. It was tough at first but I have been successfully off the medication and happier than ever for over two months. This book is great. The way you think and speak does determine your mood. Try it! Six bucks can change, and save your life forever.

5.0 von 5 Sternen This book pulls me out of depression every time, 14. Dezember 1999
Rezension bezieht sich auf: Feeling Good: The New Mood Therapy (Taschenbuch)
Surrering from depression in the form of extreme self-criticism, I used this book 10 years ago, following the exercises. It was the ONLY thing which saved me from the hell I was going through. Dr. Burns' tone is firm yet loving. His exercises let you face the demons which haunt you by gently encouraging you look at them and confront them. It gives you back your personal power. Also, the chapter on anger is the best treatment of the subject I have ever read. I pulled the book off the shelf again this week after going through a difficult time, and it worked again to pull me out of the depression. I strongly recommend this book. It is just full of support and insight for understanding the true meaning of self-worth. Thank you Dr. Burns.

Rezension bezieht sich auf: Feeling Good: The New Mood Therapy (Taschenbuch)
This book deserves the highest praise. When coming across an advertisement for it, I was in the middle of a severe depression. I knew that objectively things were fine, but just could not snap out of my despair and urge to abandon everything. The reviews by other readers made very promising reading, so I ordered the book and started to read it straight away. When I had completed the first three chapters, I noticed that miraculously, my depression had vanished. Since then, I have been reading a couple of pages every day, doing the exercises and am just grateful that this book has come my way. I have recommended it to several friends and colleagues, will mention it in my classes and feel that I have never spent money more usefully.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Spitze!, 16. September 2002
Rezension bezieht sich auf: Feeling Good: The New Mood Therapy (Taschenbuch)

4.0 von 5 Sternen Probably the Best Book Aimed at Depression but Too Long, 30. Dezember 1999
This is a book by David Burns, a psychiatrists who has treated many depressed patients. The book starts out with a special test you can take to see if you are depressed.
After this test, he shows you some basic concepts on how your depression starts. To answer, the depression starts because you have irrational beliefs that cause you to interpret events as being bad without really thinking about what you are thinking. For example, if lets say your teacher screams at you, you might get depressed because you think you're a worthless, horrible, person who doesn't deserve to live. This belief causes you to feel depressed instead of just disappointed or frustrated.
So, CBT(Cognitve-Behavior Therapy, this books type of therapy)attmepts to make you realized how back your beliefs are by making you draw columns where you state your irrational belief then describe what kind of an irrational belief it is and then write what kind of belief you should have instead. The book has many charts and pictures of techniques of taking away your irrational thoughts such as overgeneralizing things and all-or-nothing thinking.
This book was voted best book on self-help depression a person can buy by over 100 psychologists in the"authoritve guide to self-help books"( I recommend you read it.)
My problem with the book is that it was too long. It was just to long. The book is about 665 pages long. For goddsake, make it atleast 200 pages. I couldn't finish the book, I just skimmed and got a lot of information from that skimming. The book, if short could have been better in the sense that it wouldn't sometimes be so confusing on what means what. Basically, the book needed to be shorter but the content was very good.
