5.0 von 5 Sternen A fantstic novel about a dark, sepulchral, unsettling life.
What would life be like if it was meaningless, if the people we associated with were plastic? not real? pretentious? What if our life was just a hopeless void with loose morals, drugs, hollow sayings and beliefs? What if we just played the empty game of life as it was laid down for us? That is the main theme in Joan Didion's classic book that takes the reader into the...

2.0 von 5 Sternen Obscure and bleak....an unpleasant reading experience
I should have heeded the warning at the back of the book. "Play It As It Lays" didn't sound like something I would enjoy. But I thought, "What the heck.....Joan Didion is a celebrated writer and PIAIL was after all shortlisted for the National Book Award". Having slogged through it and some USD11 poorer, I only regret not having gone with my gut. I...

What would life be like if it was meaningless, if the people we associated with were plastic? not real? pretentious? What if our life was just a hopeless void with loose morals, drugs, hollow sayings and beliefs? What if we just played the empty game of life as it was laid down for us? That is the main theme in Joan Didion's classic book that takes the reader into the life of Maria Wyeth, actress, mother, daughter, divorced wife, a woman who has grown tired and desensitized to the fakeness and pain caused by the Hollywood and Las Vegas establishment. It is a life filled to the brim with movie premiers, booze, pills, suicide, casual, empty sex, abortions and nothing else. It is a world of plastic surgery and beautiful people, of Let's do lunch and venomous gossip. The sneering, caustic tone of Didion's voice would want to make anybody who lived the lives of the novel's characters put a gun to their head and end it all. The language is stinging, fast-paced, lean, anti-Hollywood. Pure Didion!

I was bored to death with Maria Wyeth and her decadent family and friends. They're an unsympathetic lot and deserve everything they get. The message may be biting and stark, but I found Didion's prose, with their "quick cross cuts and rapid dissolves", irritating and obscure. It's like watching a bad Robert Altman movie that's shot with a hand-held camera. It gave me a bad headache. Stay away......unless you're a Didion fan.

Joan Didion's " Play it as it Lays " is one of the few books I read over and over again . It chilled me to the bone . Much has been said of Ms. Didion's voice as a prose writer - no decoration , her words simply astound . With this novel , however , style takes a backseat to a frightening ability to flesh out character . I must stop myself , for it is difficult to review any novel without citing specific passages or examples . You'll just have to trust me : this novel is Didion's finest work , and the truths she illustrates cannot be denied .

5.0 von 5 Sternen My first glimpse of my favorite author, 22. Dezember 1999
Rezension bezieht sich auf: Play It as It Lays (Taschenbuch)
I was in my last year of high school when I read this book and it remains one of my most treasured books. Didion's precise images in Play It As It Lays compelled me to run out and read each essay and book I could get my hands on. Sometimes I pick it up and read the book from cover to cover, other times just my favorite parts. This book tells a story that - while distressing - you absolutely must devour!

Didion in absolute top form. A pleasure to read and ponder, through and through. Filled with unforgettable characters and a palpable sense of foreboding, this book is written in Ms. Didion's signature style -- a style in which what is not said is at least as important as what is. A heartbreaking meditation on the artifice of Hollywood and the perils of disconnectedness.

5.0 von 5 Sternen an early novel but worth it, 24. April 2014

Didion's clarity of sentences are a joy. She never gives too much information and always just enough, eliminating with each sentence so many possibilities.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Portrait of a life gone wrong, 11. Juli 2000
Rezension bezieht sich auf: Play It as It Lays (Taschenbuch)
Didion is a definite "show not tell" author. She presents a series of fragmented snapshots, strings them together, then expects the reader to do much of the interpretation. The result: a grim, relentless, despairing mosiac of a life in the process of falling apart.
I have admired Didion's non-fiction ("White Album," "Slouching Towards Bethlehem," "After Henry") for her adroit use of language: her skill in putting together words that pack in a maximum amount of powerful imagery, the way her phrases implant themselves in my thoughts and remain there.
While "Play It As It Lays" demonstrates some of that same skill with language that is evident in Didion's journalistic work, I doubt that the story of Maria will cling to me like the stories of people from Didion's essays: the abandoned child on the highway, clinging to the cyclone fence, the neglected flower child rocking on a rocking horse.
A day after I read "Play It As It Lays," I wondered if I had dreamed it. Not so for Didion's non-fiction. In that case, I wondered if I had lived it.

"Play It As It Lays" is a work of genius -- short, direct, readable, brilliant. Didion's best writing and a classic of American fiction.

5.0 von 5 Sternen A disturbing yarn, 22. Juli 2000
Rezension bezieht sich auf: Play It as It Lays (Taschenbuch)
Didion applys her journalistic eye to a 1960s California, and the results are profoundly disturbing. The protagonist, Maria Wyneth, is an unstable woman whose favorite pastime is driving at extremely high speed for hours in her convertible on the freeway. Maria's experiences in the desert as well as in a very seedy hotel with an abortion doctor provide a vivid microcosm of the side of society we never knew.
