Rezension bezieht sich auf: The Making of Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back (Gebundene Ausgabe)
Länge:: 1:03 Minuten

This book is finally out after being postponed for a few times. It's actually 362 pages, slightly thicker than the previous book, The Making of Star Wars: The Definitive Story Behind the Original Film, which is already a massive book. It seems that no paperback edition is available yet at the launch.

Once again, I'm marveled by the amount of information packed into the book by author J.W. Rinzler. I can't even begin to imagine the amount of research and effort is needed to put everything together, after the movie was screened 30 years ago.

The book details the arduous journey in the making of the film from the first story conference up to screening, and to the film awards won after that. The writing is excellent, filled with all sorts of stories and quotes. You get to read about the technical aspect of creating the movie, the little tricks used to create something believable on screen - see how they use fiber optics for lighting spaceships, painting the backgrounds, fixing up Yoda, and much more including production diaries of how they shoot.

The pages are also loaded with concept art, sketches, storyboards, memos, film stills and photos. All well reproduced, very detailed. There are lots of fun stuff happening behind the scenes captured on camera.

While the book is pricey, yes, it's well worth the money. With so much material, it will take more than one sitting to go through them.

Definitely a "must have" for Star Wars fans.

Note that in the previous book, they took out some content from the paperback edition. Not sure if it's going to happen here again.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Ziemlich gut., 20. Mai 2014
Verifizierter Kauf(Was ist das?)
Dieses dicke Buch gibt einen sehr detaillierten Bericht über alle Aspekte der Herstellung des zweiten Star Wars Films 'Das Imperium schlägt zurück'.

Sehr detailliert.

Ist also nur was für richtige Star Wars Nerds. Für diese lohnt es sich aber.

Rezension bezieht sich auf: The Making of Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back (Gebundene Ausgabe)
Introducing my daughter to the Star Wars universe seemed like a good idea to me, after all it features a princess who can fight and even repair space ships. So I ordered this book because I thought it would be a good idea to show her how movies are (or better, were) made. And we read it before I showed her those parts of the movie which I found appropriate for her (excluding Wampa and Darth Vader choking scenes). So she knew that there was a small person inside of R2-D2, and important things like this. Most importantly, she now nows that princesses can fight, too.
But back to the book: When I opened it for the first time, I was overwhelmed by the amount of text and information and I was wondering whether my choice was a good one. After all, it looked very "nerdy" to me and I could not imagine that someone could fill so many pages and keep the reader interested at the same time. "Will I ever read this?!" I asked myself.
But that was very wrong! The book shines a light on *every* aspect of film making, from financing to sound engineering. And it puts an emphasis on how much dedication, talent and hard work is needed to produce something that is "just" a movie. I learned a great deal about movie making in general from it while feeling entertained from beginning to end. Great stuff!
The only negative is that I kind of expected more reference material such as "blueprints" of the hardware in the movie. There is, e.g., a top view and a side view of a Rebel transport ship in one (too) small photograph, which is exactly what I was looking for. More and bigger images like this one would have been great.
But this should not distract from an overall five-star rating.
