5.0 von 5 Sternen I re-lived the exultation and the despair of Ruffian's life, 28. Juni 1998
Rezension bezieht sich auf: Ruffian (Taschenbuch)
The wonderful books of Walter Farley hooked me on thoroughbred racing when I was a young girl. When I grew up, I used my Farley-gained knowledge to follow big-time racing in the real world. I was knowledgeable enough to know how special Ruffian was when the spectacular filly took the racing world by storm in 1974. The following year only added to her legend. As I devoured Ms. Schwartz's riveting account of Ruffian's life -- and death -- I was transported back more than two decades. This book evokes the excitement of the times, and all the memories I had buried deep in my mind poured back. I let myself remember how glorious Ruffian was and how I, along with millions of others, "raced" vicariously through her exploits. As the noble filly's final race approached, I found myself wondering if I would be able to finish reading the book. Reading the account of the race and its aftermath was as gut-wrenching as I feared it would be. I asked myself, "WHY am I doing this to myself?" I wished I'd never started the book, because once started, it had to be finished. But Ms. Schwartz has figured out how to put a fitting, uplifting end to this tragic and triumphant saga. The tears I shed revisiting Ruffian's story were worth it. I take from this book the inspiration of Ruffian's strength, determination, and spirit.

5.0 von 5 Sternen An experience of exhiliration, reflection and tragedy., 19. Juni 1999
Von Ein Kunde
Rezension bezieht sich auf: Ruffian (Taschenbuch)
Difficult to read as the book unfolds because the ending is known but the personification of Ruffian holds one to the text. The author creates an historical flow and does not bog down in intricacies. A complex tapestry of the fraility of human personality and decision-making, causes the reader to ponder the "if" question.
The book appears to be very honest in its approach to the people involved, the surly part of horse racing and tragedy itself. Ruffian's last night will be poignantly imaged in the reader's memory. The injury, subsequent failed surgery and eventual death are graphic but tastefully portrayed. A difficult belnd for any author.
Top notch - just wish I could find a hard back copy.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Even though I knew the ending, I couldn't put it down., 6. März 1999

I always loved and admired Ruffian and I actually went into mourning when she had to be put down. Why should such a beautiful animal with such a big heart die so early? I thought I knew all there was about Ruffian until I read this book. It takes you into her and everyone connected to her. It was a very informative book and I felt like I was walking among everyone involved. Jane was so informative - but it didn't feel like information, she put so much feeling into it. I felt I was reliving it all over again. It was a wonderful tribute to a champion. I just wish she was around a little longer. She was called up to heaven much too early.

5.0 von 5 Sternen I read it in two days, 4. Mai 1999
Rezension bezieht sich auf: Ruffian (Taschenbuch)
I almost didn't read this wonderful book because I knew how it ended. But I am so glad that I devoured it this weekend because it was uplifting in its story of such a special filly. I also learned so much about every aspect of horse racing. The filly's human family was depicted as caring and smart horsemen. But the best part was getting to know Ruffian who lived to run.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Hard to put down once you begin reading..., 19. März 1999

Rezension bezieht sich auf: Ruffian (Taschenbuch)
Though most books on horses tend to become dull and drag in certain places, "Ruffian" is anything but that. Superb writing keeps you interested even while knowing how it will end. If you had to choose one book to read about a race horse, this is it.

5.0 von 5 Sternen A compelling and heartbreaking book, 30. Oktober 1999

Rezension bezieht sich auf: Ruffian (Taschenbuch)
This is a brilliant book - a must-read if you love horses, but definitely worth reading even if you have no connection to horses or racing. Very well researched, full of illuminating facts, but it reads like fiction. Very moving!

5.0 von 5 Sternen One of the best racing books, 7. Juni 1999

Rezension bezieht sich auf: Ruffian (Taschenbuch)
This is one book that is impossible to put down. Although the reader knows how the story will end, it is still a powerful and tragic story. A reader would have to be made of stone to not cry after reading this book.
