I am very thankful to my friend (also a PhD student) who introduced me to this book! I enjoyed reading it and really got some useful information out of it.
The authors talk about things that most people in academia like professors, assistants, supervisors - take for granted and do not even consider to mention or teach. The book covers the whole range from the attitude and behaviors that are expected from a grad student, to basic information on types of papers, the writing process, the viva (as I am not a native speaker, this was the first time I heard this expression! For us, this is called "defensio") to aspects of career development.

It would be ideal if a PhD student could read this book even before starting a Ph.D., but it is never too late, I read it at a much later stage. This book tells you what your supervisor or peers won't tell you and it helps you avoid making cardinal mistakes. I strongly recommend this book to all PhD students.
