2.0 von 5 Sternen after a certain point. . .i couldn't pick it up.
Toibin's prose is, technically speaking, above reproach, however, the total effect is bloodless and dispassionate. Perhaps I didn't give it enough of a chance, but if a book hasn't 'sparked' me by page 100, I put it down. One of the advantages, I guess, of non-required reading.

All creeds, sexualities, nationalities, and gender are immaterial for understanding this sublime piece of fiction. Toibin's prose is shatteringly sparse, it is intelligent, stylish and utterly compelling. The story initself is relitevely conventional, a forbidden love in the midst of war, complete with over baring parents, and a tragic intensely moving close. Pablo and Richard engage you so strongly, you feel, by its ens, that you have witnessed their lives, their complexities and their hardships - they move you. Haunting is so often used to describe modern fiction, but here it is justified.
It is modern fiction at its most inventive, emottioally charged genius. READ TOIBIN, AND DEMAND HE WIN THE BOOKER, though The Blackwater Lightship is not as powerful, sensual, erotic - but the psychological and emotional effects of AIDS and their victems magnificant. He has great diversity of style and content, though is grossley under valued! The man is Joyce for our generation! And Hollywood please never film it!

5.0 von 5 Sternen An Insightful, Moving Glimpse of a Gay Argentinian, 20. März 2000
Von
Rezension bezieht sich auf: The Story of the Night (Taschenbuch)
Colm Toibin's beautifully crafted story takes us to Argentina as it was in the recent past and conveys us to where the country might be going. We see the nation through the eyes of a gay man whose life is going nowhere. Toibin skillfully tells the story of two awakenings: his main character's deepening involvement in a romantic relationship with his best friend's brother, and the awakening of Argentina to the need to rid itself of corruption and irresponsibility in order to be a viable nation.
I thoroughly enjoyed the story, the characterizations, and the political and sexual themes. It was the way Toibin told the story, though, that captured my attention and held it to the last sentence in the book. Definitely worth your time, an entertaining and throught-provoking read.

3.0 von 5 Sternen Little more than gay common places such as C.out & fashion., 10. März 1999
Von Ein Kunde
Must gay stories necessarily remain in the coming-out traumas and the fashion world? There's no doubt that this story is something more than this, like a Chilean I felt identified in many descriptions of the Argentinian dictatorship's time. But as a gay man I get the impression that in the "gay literature" there's no place for homosexuals who are not that trendy, handsome and rich like Richard or Pablo are. It's really pleasant to read this book, but I still haven't found in it the one who describes a homosexual like someone who comparts similar thoughts and preocupations like the rest of the mankind. I miss -like in every gay story I've read- the homosexual figure who's something more than a gay: a human being.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Creme-de-la-creme of modern novel writing, 20. April 1999
Rezension bezieht sich auf: The Story of the Night (Taschenbuch)
Toibin's treatment of some key social, political and sexual issues are beautifully intertwined in this mesmeric novel. The reader is taken through an emotive journey of life in an endearing and gripping fashion. The supporting detail which abets the central thematic story is cleverly interpolated and is, I'm sure, identifiable with our own travels through life, whatever the sexual orientation. This lends itself superbly to the readability, comprehension and empathy of the emotions and feelings of those characters portrayed. Definitely a desert island wish list title to read and re-read over and over again. More from Toibin please!

3.0 von 5 Sternen Fair, 10. Juni 2000

Rezension bezieht sich auf: The Story of the Night (Taschenbuch)
Although the book starts out with an interesting premise -- the political repression of Argentina paralleled by the emotional and sexual repression of a young Argentine -- it quickly devloves into a rather prosaic gay coming of age story. Midway through the novel all international intrigue is abruptly dropped, and the remainder is a hodge-podge of overwrought love seens. Could have been good, but instead it was only mildly interesting.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Beautiful language, compelling read, heart-breaking., 10. Oktober 1998
Von Ein Kunde
I heard Colm Toibin read from this novel at a book festival, and I was hooked.
The voice of the protagonist is real and true, and Toibin's skill as a writer blew me away whenever I could tear myself away from the story long enough to reflect on his craft.
I enjoy a good story from which I can learn a thing or two, and this one fits the bill totally.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Psychological closeness to the reality of AIDS, 12. Juni 1998

Rezension bezieht sich auf: The Story of the Night (Taschenbuch)
The complexity of the AIDS parts of the novel are psychologically very stringent. It contains so many aspects of the disease, it's reality and consequences, that Mr. Toibin needs lots of praise!

This book made me cry. Toibin is an amazingly elegant writer. I love everything he has written but this book has a special place in my heart. Just read it.
