4.0 von 5 Sternen Good introduction to Programming and Java, 20. August 2012
Rezension bezieht sich auf: Introduction to Programming in Java: An Interdisciplinary Approach (Taschenbuch)
First of all: This is a good introduction to programming and Java. I stopped programming with the version switch from Turbo Pascal 4.0 to 5.0 -- and back then I never quite understood what all this object-oriented programming was good for. Now, a good twenty years later, I needed a good introduction to Java for taking the Sedgewick/Wayne Coursera class on Algorithms.

The obvious choice is their book, and I was positively surprised:

* The book is very well written. I have become so used to Programming books being either boring or pseudo-funny that it was great to read a book that uses repetition well, is written in good English and with a sense of humor without trying to be funny.
* It progresses fast enough for someone like me who knows something about programming, but explains every concept in enough detail that I never had to reference resources outside the book to understand something that was new to me.
* Maybe it is the advantage of time, but instead of starting with explaining object-oriented, modular programming, it just does it from the start and later on explains the philosophical points behind it. By that point, I had several moments of "Wow, that is so much simpler than plain old Pascal" that I now think I do get OOP.
* The motivating examples are nice, because they do give a perspective on why the examples are relevant in different fields. I had several ideas on new programming projects based on the tools that I learned from reading this book, which I guess is one of the intended side effect.

I am deducting one star for the price. I understand that for a U.S. textbook, this is not overpriced, however, writing this review for amazon.de, I would think that it should be possible to publish an equally great book at a lower price in Germany.

Another small point: The fourth and final section of the book is basically a short version of the first two sections of the author's book on algorithms and data structures. So if you are thinking about acquiring both, be aware that this book is some 100 pages shorter than you think.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Super Buch, 18. Januar 2010
