This book defied categorization. It's certainly a fascinating and very funny read, but I can't say for sure if it's a biography of Andy Kaufman or Bob Zmuda's autobiography. In the end it doesn't matter -- the book is terrific reading. Co-author Matthew Scott Hansen takes a series of hysterical and hard-to-believe anecdotes and constructs a completely entertaining and sometimes moving narrative about two intertwined show-biz lives. If your only exposure to Kaufman was his goofy-sweet character on Taxi, you're in for a surprise, maybe an outright shock -- and that, apparently, is just the way Andy would have wanted it. Kaufman was a great many things other than a quirky sitcom character. In fact, although Taxi gave Kaufman a chance to reach his biggest audience, his work on the sitcom might have been the thing he enjoyed least. Zmuda delights in telling the tale of how he and Andy experimented with comedy in ways no one else ever had. They pulled off some brilliant practical jokes, wrote television shows that were years ahead of their time, and probably made more people uncomfortable than they made laugh -- and that may have been the point. A masterful comic writer himself, Hansen takes Zmuda's tales and deftly weaves them into a book that will make you laugh a lot more than it makes you uncomfortable. Read this and just try to imagine spending a day with Mr. X. I dare you.

Has Bob Zmuda given us a heartfelt biography of his brilliant partner and friend, or a shameless act of self-promotion, intended to insure what he believes to be his rightful place in comedy history, mere months before a major motion picture comes out about the real star of the show? The answer is both. Zmuda was Andy Kaufman's writing partner and co-conspiritor, and boy, does he let you know it. There are moments here when I cringed -- moments, for example, where Zmuda describes shared looks between himself and Kaufman where they both know who to credit for some great idea: Bob Zmuda. Where's Andy to give his side of the story? But for every cringe there's at least five big laughs -- I honestly haven't laughed out loud so much at a book since Woody Allen's "Without Feathers" years and years ago. And the final chapters detailing Kaufman's battle with cancer are brutally honest. Zmuda can be grating, but his participation in comedy history can't be denied. And just for the laughs, I have to recommend this book.

1.0 von 5 Sternen A nice book of a selfcentred "friend", 28. April 2001
Von Ein Kunde
It`s not that Zmuda couldn`t write in an interesting way. His work is light entertainment and amusing - quite fun to read (one star for that). But if you expected a biography of Andy with sights behind the curtain, you`ll be dissappointed. In the centre of this book is not Andy Kaufman, but him - Zmuda. "Best Friend tells all" is the subtitle, and really he tells all - about himself and a little more. He`s absolutely too high-handed and that destroys most of the positive impressions. After reading a while personally I was forced to put the book away to get some recovery. A good example for his smugness is the selection of pictures in the book, you`ll see more Zmuda than Andy. This book is for Zmuda fans - if there are any.

3.0 von 5 Sternen Excellent anecdotes, good insights, questionable narrative, 4. Januar 2000
Rezension bezieht sich auf: Andy Kaufman Revealed!: Best Friend Tells All (Gebundene Ausgabe)
One thing Zmuda's book does that "Man on the Moon" did not is outline the M.O. for Andy's stunts, although it still doesn't really establish a reason for them. Of course, maybe there wasn't one. Andy tried to erase the boundary between comedy on the screen and comedy in the field, but whether or not there was a point to his efforts isn't completely decided in this book -- he still could have just been an idiot savant for all we know. The stories behind Andy's best-known antics are wonderful; he and Zmuda really did operate a precise machine of real-life theatre that, for better or worse, set a lot of precedents in show business. The Jerry Lawlor passage puts to rest one of the entertainment questions I've been wracking myself about for many years.
I also liked Zmuda's chapter on his adventures with Mr. X (btw, Mr. X is allegedly Norman Wexler, who wrote "Serpico" and "Saturday Night Fever," according to Roger Ebert); if it doesn't obviously show the inspiration for Tony Clifton, it's still a great story. But I also agree with many other readers that Zmuda intrudes a bit too much of his own biography upon the story of Kaufman's, and succumbs to cliches, and sometimes embarassing details, about his own sex/love lives too much for my taste.
I haven't read the other bio on Kaufman yet, but I suspect that seeing "Man on the Moon" and reading this book might provide you with a good summary of Kaufman's life and importance. Of course, what's really needed is a comprehensive video release of his television history -- a great idea would be a compilation of his appearances on "Saturday Night Live" and "Fridays" if such a deal could be worked out. Not a bad reference, and definitely an entertaining and quick, if flawed, read.

5.0 von 5 Sternen It doesn't get any more satisfying for Kaufman fans, 20. September 1999

Rezension bezieht sich auf: Andy Kaufman Revealed!: Best Friend Tells All (Gebundene Ausgabe)
The sudden and fairly recently rush of interest concerning Andy feels a bit like his "comedy" act. Disappointing non-existence for uncomfortable amounts of time, bribed away in the end by payoff/compensation. If the TV specials and REM song and other impending projects are Elvis, Congas, and Milk and Cookies, than Bob Zmuda's "ANDY KAUFMAN REVEALED!" is the crown jewel in Tony Clifton.
I doubt you'll ever find a closer-to-Andy piece than his best friend/writer/producer/soulmate's book. No other medium can truly portray the details correctly in the interest of mainstream interest, and no other book can get inside his life with the same investment. Myself being a lifelong Kaufman *addict*, I never tried to fool myself into thinking I knew anything at all genuine about the man. I basked in him, but until REVEALED, it seems no one but the author and Andy himself ever really knew as much about him as the author. Zmuda makes me salivate offering up intimate exchanges and anecdotes, with each proceeding page filling me in a little bit more on Kaufman the person. I revel in knowing the creative process of Andy, as well as his personal habits, which are perfectly fitting in their eccentricity.
bottom line is if you wish to get to know the secretive clique that was Kaufman and Zmuda better, buy this book. It's really the best chance you have at fully belonging to Uncle Andy's Funhouse

4.0 von 5 Sternen A Wonderful Read for Andy Kaufman Fans!, 26. Oktober 1999

(REAL NAME)
Rezension bezieht sich auf: Andy Kaufman Revealed!: Best Friend Tells All (Gebundene Ausgabe)
As a long-time fan of the strange, off-center comedy of Andy Kaufman, I jumped at the chance to learn more about this incredible talent who was taken from us far too early. While the book tends to spend a little too much time on Zmuda's own background, it ultimately delivers the goods and lets us see behind the curtain and glimpse the real Andy Kaufman. Kaufman turned his entire life into street theatre. It seemed he was unable to go anywhere without launching some all-out assault on the sensibilities of unsuspecting bystanders. On stage, Andy Kaufman was fearless -- often daring his audiences to loathe and despise him before pulling them back across the threshold and leaving them breathless with laughter. I remember watching him read The Great Gatsby to a confused audience who kept waiting for the punchline that never came. First they became uncomfortable, then irritable, then downright angry. And as the anger mounted, they gradually realized that they were being had and how very funny it really was. Andy Kaufman was a performance artist before anyone knew the meaning of the term. And this book illuminates the life and career of that strange and wonderful performer who, alas, will best be remembered as part of the ensemble of a sitcom. His talent reached far beyond Latka Gravas. He is sorely missed. (But I still keep waiting to find out that his death was only another "gotcha!")

Rezension bezieht sich auf: Andy Kaufman Revealed!: Best Friend Tells All (Gebundene Ausgabe)
At first Andy Kaufman was just an odd little man to me. I had been some what interested in him. But then I was in a book store and I look over my shoulder to a book. A book about Andy Kaufman. I though it might be good so I bought it. I read this with great interest. Ever page learning more and more about this genious. It was the first book to make me hold back tears as I read the final chapters. It is a very funny book as well. Bob Zmuda does a wonderful job of telling his stories. He also tells the truth of what was really happening between Jerry Lawler and Andy. As well as the truth about Tony Clifton. It also gives us an inside look at the real Andy. And the friendship between Andy and his best friend Bob Zmuda. What he was really like. I was actually a little bit sad when I finished it. I just wanted more. I wanted to know more about Andy. After reading this I became extremly interested in Andy Kaufman. I want to know everything now. This is I think the best book I have ever read. A great book about a great preformer. I don't want to call him a comedian because he didn't like being called that. We will never have anyone like Andy Kaufman again. But his legacy will live on. Any of you who have the smallest interest in Andy Kaufman read this book. Learn more about the man, the the misunderstanding, the legend, that is Andy Kaufman.

5.0 von 5 Sternen A wonderful tribute to the genius that was Andy Kaufman, 29. Oktober 1999

Rezension bezieht sich auf: Andy Kaufman Revealed!: Best Friend Tells All (Gebundene Ausgabe)
About a month ago, I was listening to the Don & Mike National Radio Show (on Westwwod One)when they had Bob Zmuda on as one of their guests. I enjoyed the ancedotes that Zmuda mentioned in that interview and I immediately went to my local bookstore and purchased the book. As a long-time big-time fan of Andy Kaufman, I loved the book and enjoyed the way that the author was able to blend his own life experiences with Kaufman's.
When I was a 15 year-old high school Junior in 1978, I saw Andy (with Zmuda) perform his antics at a show at Western Illinois University in Macomb (I grew up in a small town near Macomb). It was the funniest show that I've ever witnessed, either before or since. That night, he performed Mighty Mouse, Elvis, wrestled onstage with a pretty blond lady, did all of his gags....and to close the show shook hands with all 2500 people present when they exited the venue. I was in awe!! I still am!
According to the book, the WIU show was at about the same time that Kaufman/Zmuda flew in the small plane during a dangerous storm to a "show in downstate Illinois." Makes you wonder.
This book is a must-read for anyone who has an interest in the life and career of Andy Kaufman. I will also be looking forward to seeing the movie "Man on the Moon" when it is released.

1.0 von 5 Sternen More like "Bob Zmuda Revealed!".....who cares?, 16. Oktober 1999
Rezension bezieht sich auf: Andy Kaufman Revealed!: Best Friend Tells All (Gebundene Ausgabe)
I have been waiting 8 months for this book to hit the shelves and now that I finally have it, I am thoroughly disappointed and annoyed.
I appreciate that Mr. Zmuda was Kaufman's best friend and participated in many of Andy's wildest escapades, but the intent behind this book seems more to be to take credit for much of Kaufman's greatest bits, rather than a tribute to him.
The chapter titles should read like this:
Chapter One: Me
Chapter Two: Andy, Me, and Me
Chapter Three: Me, Me, Me and Kaufman
Chapter Four: Forget Kaufman, I'm the Genius Behind Him!
It was a little offputting, to say the least. Although some of the anecdotes were entertaining, they all centered around only two themes:
1) Kaufman like to trick people 2) Kaufman liked to make people uncomfortable
Well, 15 years after his death he's still managing to do both, by having Zmuda write this tell all. I was tricked into thinking it would be all about Andy, and I am annoyed that it is not.
The fact that it Zmuda had help writing this is incredible (Matthew Scott Hansen). I'm sure Zmuda loved Andy and would never intentionally disrespect him, but 90% of this book sounds like coattail-riding to me.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Great insight and Humor. Mr. X alone is worth the read., 16. Januar 2000
Rezension bezieht sich auf: Andy Kaufman Revealed!: Best Friend Tells All (Gebundene Ausgabe)
I read this book in three quick reads and found it very entertaining. The chapter about Mr. X is incredibly funny and almost unbelievable. If anyone knows who he is, I'm dying to know, please email me.
Andy was clearly a strange guy marching to a different drummer. It's a fascinating life and worth the read. Zmuda and Kaufman were clearly funnier off screen than on.
Previous interviewers were negative on Zmuda talking about himself and this created some trepidation on my part. That was not warranted as he didn't overly talk about himself and frankly, his life is also interesting. The final chapters dealing with death show Zmuda's personal growth and maybe his final maturity to a real adult.
I encourage this book for entertainment, particularly if you enjoy Satuday Night Live, Rodney Dangerfield, Jim Carrey or Robin Williams. These men were peers and influences in Andy's life or he in their's. If you get the chance to see the two Andy Kaufman specials which run on Comedy Central, Comedy and Wrestling, make a point to watch. They serve as a great visual background to this book.
