It is so good to read a medical doctor with an opinion that isn't potentially physically damaging to the human body. I learned a lot about the cycle of disease created by my dietary habits, and much made sense, including why my own sporadic attempts at recommended low-fat dieting hasn't worked for weight loss or improved health. This book was certainly an eye-opener. What I felt was lacking, however, was a "How To" guide. I wanted more information on how to fast, and, since the brunt of the book focused on good eating habits, a How-To on what to eat. Heartily recommended reading.

This book accurately states the causes of the vast majority of modern disease, and the lifestyle that will reverse and prevent them. It is easy to read, although a "dense" book in terms of the information presented and the shock of learning something marvelous about which we knew little or nothing.

It is good science and well documented. It is written in layman's terms and has clear explanations of the body's functions and malfunctions. It correlates with everything I have learned over the past 40 years about health and nutrition. I bought 20 and am giving them to my family and friends.

I was overweight, plagued with high blood pressure, high cholesterol, high tryglicerides and diabetic. Treatments by some of the "best" physicians (with medication) in Israel and in California resulted in no significant improvement. Three years ago I started to do my own research and got across Dr. Fuhrman's book. Well written to be understood by layman and with scientific evidence. Since applying Dr. Fuhrman's recommendations, I lost 70 pounds in 5 months (the first 40 in 6 weeks). All indicators went back to better than normal after two weeks into the program. I later experienced 20 days fast. It was the best experience in my life. Since then, I bought more than 3 dozens of the book and gave it to everyone I care about. This book is my new bible. It is a great reading material for understanding and reinforcement. If practiced by everyone, physicians' rows will be cut by 90%. Not to be missed if you serious about your health, your well being and those around you.

This book contains some amazing stories of people who have recovered relatively rapidly from all sorts of serious health problems through fasting. The fasts recommended in this book last 10 days or more, on water only, and under medical supervision. The longer fasts, during which you drink only water, have the most remarkable effects on the body. The medical supervision is recommended particularly if a person is suffering from a serious illness and taking different medications. If you are in reasonably good health and are fasting to cleanse your body, and improve or maintain good health, then you may go on shorter fasts or even on modified fasts, if fasting only on water seems to challenging in the beginning. It is easier if you give your body time to adjust, by first eliminating heavy food, then fasting only on liquids, and then practicing fasting on water only perhaps a couple of days at a time, while monitoring how you are feeling. You may be surprised to discover that as your body adjusts to fasting, the less you eat, the less hungry you feel and that as you develop a habit of fasting, you actually enjoy the process. Cleansing your body, cutting down on food and regular fasting, to the best of your ability, is bound to contribute to better health of your body and of your mind and to a greater level of energy. I generally fast for 5 - 10 days each month, not as often on pure water as on modified fasts (sometimes I drink chamomile tea throughout the fast). Most people who fast (myself included) do not fast under any kind of medical supervision - but again, for people who are taking any kind of medication, medical supervision may be advisable.

This book also provides tips on nutrition and has some helpful food suggestions for people who are suffering from different ailments - e.g. what to eat (and what not to eat), to relatively easily stop migraines even if you've suffered from them for years and nothing else helped before.

Hi, I'm an MD from Holland (age 25) and really liked the book. However, I tried complete fasting to remedy my recurrent depressions and tinnitus, but after 5 days I felt very weak and breathless. When I had my blood tested I had low red bloodcells (4.17 milj), low Hemoglobin (13 Gm/DL) low White blood cells (2.8 *1000)and High bilirubin total (2.5 MG/DL). Does any reader (doctor perhaps) know how to explain this? Was I breaking down cells in order to have enough energy supply? The doctor in Las Angeles that I visited couldn't explain it. He tested my liver enzymes but they were normal. So,I quit the fasting. Who can explain my problem?

Dr. Fuhrman's book is a sensible explanation of how our diet can palpably improve our health. I found the book highly credible and easy to read even as the author explained diseases and processes in a careful, technical tone. What I most appreciate from Furhman's book is the emphasis on "eating for health." His program is a bit more strict than Dr. Dean Ornish's: he proposes a new basic 4 food groups--fruits, vegetables, whole grains and legumes. Furhman's program eliminates all dairy and animal forms of protein. Finally, the tone of the book is optimistic and I found it highly motivating!

I found this book to be one of the better sources of information regarding fasting. It takes a subject that is somewhat taboo and breaks it down into simple and understandable terms. I think it's worth reading even if you don't want to practice what is being discussed. It never hurts to understand what is going on even if you don't want to do it. I will tell you this, I have followed this book and a few others and have made tremendous gains. Not in weight but in my health. One of the benefits that can't be touted enough is the true feeling of being in control of your own body. Once you get that feeling you lose this sense of helplessness and understand that your health is your own responsibility.

I have read this book and I agree with all the reviewers: the information it presents is excellent. However, there is one aspect that is not covered with the necessary detail. I'm talking about an easy to follow diet, which you can apply to your everyday life. I know, "more fruit and vegetables and less fat" is a good advise, but I'd like to follow a diet that covers all my basic nutritional needs, and that's something Fuhrman's book lacks.

My goal is to construct a weekly diet (14 dishes) with an even distribution of food so that I'm sure I'm eating the best possible combination of nutrients (talking into account both RDAs and Fuhrman's advice). Is there anyone out there who has developed such a diet? If so, please send it to me at cancrians@iname.com. It will be certainly welcome.

This is an excellent book, and the only real problem that I have found with it, is to get people to read it! AAGH. Such and excellent book, and too many stuborn people. Dr. Furhman is one of the few M.D.s that actually care about us... Ever wonder why your doctor doesnt want you to read this book? He continues to make money, as long as you are sick...
