5.0 von 5 Sternen Wonderful look at Jesus' life, 1. August 2000

This book gives a whole new look at the life of Jesus, not to mention the life of the main character, Conrad. Bill Myers did a great job of describing what Jesus' ministry might have been like if he was around today. At the same time, "Eli" is a great story about one man following Jesus and learning what justice and mercy truly are.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Intriguing, well-written premise, but had several problems, 19. September 2000

Although not a fan of the so-called "Christian" publishers, I have enjoyed immensely many of this author's books. The premise of an alternative universe wherein the Messiah has yet to arrive was the reason I bought the book. Character development was excellent, as I was immediately drawn into the storyline. I laughed and cried with their ups and downs and really felt part of the story. However, the little 'niggles' continued throughout and I felt they distracted me continually. For instance, the dating system, which would not be as it was with no Anno Domini (AD= after birth of Christ); the usage of geographic names tied into Christian names (both of these anachronisms, for lack of a better describer, are mentioned in another reviewer's contribution); the inability of the main character"Connie" to realize only sporadically how the plot paralleling the life of Christ was unfolding, the total LACK of ANY explanation as to WHAT was the mainstream "religion" in the USA...that is my main gripe. It wasn't any form of Judiasm, but obviously had broken away from the Hebrew tradition, but we were never told this. When you keep in mind that Christ was born a Jew, having the character also being Jewish doesn't jibe with the remaining characters also not being Jewish, but "something else". I feel that this lack of coherence in translating the Christ story over into another setting was its main weakness. Aside from that, however, I considered the story a strong one and would recommend it to everyone for a very inspiring and uplifting read.
