3.0 von 5 Sternen Great book, poor translation....
Sun Tzu is great, but once a particular translation gets to the top of Amazon, it stays there regardless. This is not the best translation of the ancient classic. Ames' and Gagliardi's are the best versions. See clearbridge web site for comparisons and lots of Art of War information.

Many have called 'The Art of War' a Chinese version of Machievalli's 'The Prince." Both books provide a warrior/prince/manager/CEO with a way to think about problems and come up with dynamic solutions. This translation provides the work of Sun Tzu in a good translation, not great, but only good.
Another positive aspect of this book is that it doesn't define what each passage means. It lets the reader determine the meaning and personally apply it to their life and situation.
Give it a read, Sun Tzu does not disappoint and decide for yourself - what Sun Tzu wanted the reader to understand - don't be forced, as some books do, to allow them to tell you what Sun Tzu meant.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Very interesting monograph, 26. Februar 2012
Verifizierter Kauf(Was ist das?)
Rezension bezieht sich auf: The Art of War (Gebundene Ausgabe)
The monograph 'The Art Of War' by Sun Tzu is a logically structured script.
Sun Tzu provides information on general aspects of war, which alone isn't spectacular.
Spectacular is, that Sun Tzu successfully shows the motivation and the pychology behind decisions and shows circumstances in war and how to use them in order to obtain success.
The Art Of War is a very good read and a must for anybody, who enjoys traditional Asian monographs.

One drawback on the book itself:
The book of this publisher is on a low level of quality, I'd suggest spending more money on this monograph but have a properly bound book.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Whatever you were looking for, you've found it here., 13. März 1999
Von Ein Kunde
Rezension bezieht sich auf: The Art of War (UNESCO Collection of Representative Works: European) (Taschenbuch)
In ART OF WAR, there is a rare thing in books in which all of it or most of it can relate to many things. If the reader uses some of these war tactics and strategies in the modern world, they may find it easy to relate. Business is war, but in a different scenario than actual battles. Thus it is easy to relate to this book. Even rivals in sports and entertainment can be outwitted by the wisdom in this book. It also adds examples of some actions, which show how these sayings and writings apply to the real world.
So no matter what you were looking for in this book, whether it be business, entertainment, sports, war games, actual wars, or even travel, you can be sure to learn more on how ot attack life here.
The book's age is hard and easy to see at the same time. You can tell that it was written thousands of years ago by what Sun Tzu tells of. (Chariots, gold pieces are currency, etc...), but some of the grammar and language are shown well in the translation in the book, making it easy to read in English as well as other languages you would be able to find the book in.
The only weakness of this book would have to be its accented topic towards foriegn countries, and much older devices. The way to break through this is for the reader to be able to translate it into his/her life.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Brian Wayne Wells, Esquire, reviews "The Art of War", 17. Mai 1998
Von Ein Kunde
Sun Tzu's work, "The Art of War," originally written sometime in the period of time from 400 to 300 B.C.E., has experienced numerous revivals in popularity over the years. During the 1970s it was popular with students of the New Left when the study of guerilla warfare was in vogue. In the 1980s, "The Art of War," reappeared in quite different company.
In the 1980s "The Art of War" was often carried in the brief cases of corporate raiders, who quoted from it liberally to explain their view of the corporate world into which they had entered. (Note that the characters played by Michael Douglas and Charlie Sheen in Oliver Stone's 1987 movie, "Wall Street" are pictured quoting Sun Tzu's "The Art of War.")
Although this volume translated by Samuel B. Griffith, published in 1963 by Oxford University Press, with a forward by B.H. Lidell Hart is not the only translation available, It may be the best. In addition to the entire text, the volume also contains an appendix with significant additional material on the influence of Sun Tzu down through the ages.

5.0 von 5 Sternen The ultimate point in strategy !, 27. Mai 1999
Von Ein Kunde
Rezension bezieht sich auf: The Art of War (UNESCO Collection of Representative Works: European) (Taschenbuch)
Sun Tzu's 'The Art of War' is the best book ever written on earth. If I had a chance to read only one book in life, it would be The Art of War.
Sun Tzu tels you how to crush your enemy but the book has deep meanings far beyond the violent side of the war. It teaches strategy, preparation, patience, timing, and basically the mind and the spirit of a real strategist.
The best thing in this book is that it is completely transferable to many things in life: You can apply it to stock investments, to management and to interpersonal relationships and so on.
One last thing as an example : Sun Tzu in some part of the book states the things common in winning armies. In this list one of the items is "[the winning army is] whose ranks are all animated by the same spirit". Here is what they tell you in MBA programs, in organizational behaviour courses : the importance of organizational culture. There are many others to discover in this book.
I recommend you read it and see how a book can be so popular after 2500 years passed since it is written!

4.0 von 5 Sternen A must, but ..., 2. April 2000
Rezension bezieht sich auf: The Art of War (UNESCO Collection of Representative Works: European) (Taschenbuch)
Sun Tzu's "Art of war" is a must to any reader who has any interest whatsoever in the ways of battle. BUT, to the reader who has read nothing before concerning war - it is a great revelation. To the one who has read and studied the modern rules and principles of battle the book is only an authorization to what you already know. the true wonder of the book is that this authorization was not given after a few field tests in some battle ground in europe - but more then 2000 years back.
The one who reads "the art of war" must not come to reading it out of the blue - or it will be nothing more then a bunch of nice ideas. But if you have some background in the subject you will find it fascinating.

5.0 von 5 Sternen A Magnificent Piece of Ancient Wisdom, 10. April 1999
Von Ein Kunde
Rezension bezieht sich auf: The Art of War (UNESCO Collection of Representative Works: European) (Taschenbuch)
Well how can I rate this classic war and life strategy book as anything less than it is?!? Sun Tzu's The Art of War is a stunning ancient Chinese masterpiece outlining the strategies, forces, weapons, and methods one should use to fight a war. This timeless classic by one of China's greatest military leaders is a must read for any student of wars, modern or ancient. Sun Tzu approaches the book through a series of chapters ranging from diplomacy, to spies, to the use of fire in attacks. Contained within the chapters are a series of points that are layed out in order, justifying, in sort, the way these things work. The book is simple reading and not very long at all, so I recommend it for just about anyone.

3.0 von 5 Sternen theory of war made simple!, 24. Mai 1999
Von Ein Kunde
Rezension bezieht sich auf: The Art of War (UNESCO Collection of Representative Works: European) (Taschenbuch)
this book is an accumulation of facts about the practice of war. If you understand the practice of war you can also understand its meaning.
Unfortunately it seems to me that the deepest message of this work is not stressed enough:war is a serious thing, and should be undertaken only when one's existence is threatened.
Although the narrative is not dialectic, or philosophical (in some places it is almost simplistic!) I would reccommend this book to those who have to wage a war, but most importantly to those who are to make a decision to initiate or not a war champaign.
For the other who expect something analytical, or ``deep'', better stay away, it could be a real bore!

5.0 von 5 Sternen Ancient Chinese General's Military Philosophies!, 22. Oktober 1998
Von Ein Kunde
Rezension bezieht sich auf: The Art of War (UNESCO Collection of Representative Works: European) (Taschenbuch)
The Art of War is one of the most worthwhile books that I have set my eyes upon. This is a masterpiece that may serve as a guide to many problems faced in our own surroundings. Ralph D. Sawyer, who wrote a new translation to General Sun-tzu's military philosophies, helps readers understand the mind of Sun-tzu. I felt that this book was a guide to approach problems in everyday life and how to conquer many situations with a thoughtful mind-set. "A Must Read" book for anyone, due to its way of speaking to the auidience. It is the words of Sun-tzu as if he had handed you his personal manuscript to read for yourself. "Read this book, you will not be disappointed."
