Warning! Not suitable for primary school kids!
am 9. Mai 2014
As great fans of Roald Dahl, his stories have been providing bedtime reading for us for a while: After BFG and Matilda, James and the Giant Peach, I bought this one for my 8 year-old. He took squashed aunts and eaten parents in his stride, but this time the book is a bit much for him. He does want to hear it, because it is so well written and exciting, but he is also really scared and I myself think that it is rather frightening. It would be less so, if RD was not such a superb writer. But his dialogues are so vivid that the evil head witch is literally in your room with you.
Therefore a word of warning to parents with kids who have lots of imagination and a sensitive nature: Don't buy it for them until they are about 10 years of age.
The two stars are not due to lack of quality of the book (it is a great book!), but rather because I feel that the suggested age bracket is wrong.
P.S. Shortly after writing the above, the book mysteriously vanished. Did my son hide it?
