An interesting read but not great
I agree very strongly with a previous review, "Excellent but with faults" by xosa@hotmail.com. To add to this very accurate previous review, I would say that the book is clever and does give some insight into Warhol's life and times. However the cleverness often becomes superficiality. I have read many other biographies of great thinkers (scientists,...

ANDY: TAKE ONE NOW, ONE AT BEDTIME, 25. Juni 2000
I love this book with a passion - ironically, I guess. I was personally a late conversion to pop art and the wry nonsense of the post-sixties media-driven labels fetish. Now, well, if you can't best 'em ...! This deceptively relaxed book is a wondrous construct owing much to Warhol's brilliant assistant Pat Hackett (and maybe editor-nemesis Colacello?) - but it's pure war-and-love torn Andy. It's essentially a glamorous book, a book that dwells on the peacock finery of our weary world, without teasing the darker undercurrents. It's a memoir on the side of the Embattled Gods. Warhol, it has recently been said (Sunday Times, June 2000), displayed an autistic focus on things, and the evidence gushes here, like Sale Day at Macys. Commodities loom large (understatement) in his enjoyment of living. But! But! But! There is also a wider, functional and provocative philosophy that is too fudged by high living bonism. In one unsurpassable poetic passage Warhol (and Hackett) takes us through the sensual circus of an ambling sunny morning in Manhattan. The fragrance of pretzels, the light on Fifth, Chinatown babble, etc. This is an unparalleled, transcendent embracing of the temporal world that helps explain the fugacious intensity of Warhol's pictorial art - and, more universally important, urges us all to take stock of our brief mortal moments, and think again. Warhol in France, in Italy is fabulous. Warhol watching TV is a hoot. Warhol on valium is humbling. Warhol reflecting is who we all should be. Put this on your nightstand and wait till your ego goes Pop. Under the media barrage, uncowed by the soul of this soulless age, there is a shining light.

I agree very strongly with a previous review, "Excellent but with faults" by xosa@hotmail.com. To add to this very accurate previous review, I would say that the book is clever and does give some insight into Warhol's life and times. However the cleverness often becomes superficiality. I have read many other biographies of great thinkers (scientists, writers, artists) and find this work by Warhol comparatively unsatisfying. It has the air of someone (who's work is undeniably brilliant) who is hiding behind a facade and does not reveal any of his true thoughts or emotions. I had expected more from the personal philosphy of an artist of his calibre, but all the same this book is entertaining.

I love his concepts on beauty, love, success, etc. He knew like few how to look at such concepts with an acid humor, sarcasm, but never forgot to make us laugh out loud!

Excellent, but with faults...., 16. Mai 1999
This is an excellent book to take a look into the life and mind of the author himself, Andy Warhol. Chapter after chapter, Andy provides relevant stories that directly relate to the title of the chapter in one way or another, it's a very interesting book, but it has it's faults....First of all, how does he remember some of those conversations, was he recording them. Second, some of the material in the book was just stupid and ignorant, third, he contradicts himself in the book several times by saying one thing and then saying another thing that contradicts the first statement. Although some chapters are very funny, others are not! For the best example, chapter 14!!!! I want to know who that woman is, obviously she liked Andy, but gee whiz! Finally, I didn't like Truman Capote's review of the book, this book does not display amazing candor by Andy, in fact, I believe in many places this book displays Andy as a cold hearted, emotionless lizard. Some people who don't know Andy well, see him as some kind of a cult figure, well, if you don't know a whole lot about Andy Warhol himself, I reccomend reading this book and you may never look at him the same way again, especially not as a cult figure or anything like that....

Insightful...Wonderful, 20. April 1999

Warhols perspective is fabulous and covers a variety of topic from love to beauty to fame. A philosopher, a filmaker an artist. Andy's insight into life is more brillant then any thing learned in philsophy 101.

Turns your mind upside-down, 2. Dezember 1998

This is one of my 5 favorite books of all time. I'm not a huge fan of Andy's art, but his PHILOSOPHIES are AMAZING! He's got such a creative mind. Willing to look at things from underneath instead of only from the front. Such great thoughts as, "If there's one person I would really like to put on retainer it would be a boss. Someone that tells you what to do so you don't need to make all of your own decisions." And, "The best space is an empty space. I feel bad making art for a living - which really just wastes all that wonderful empty space. The only thing better than an empty room is an empty room with a little hole in the wall that looks over into another empty room." These might not be the best examples, but just two off the top of my head. His little commentaries on life will open your mind & hopefully cause you to look at your own daily life in your own twisted philosophies. Enjoy!

Warhol's Philsophy: A daily reader.., 15. Juni 1998
This book has it's moments. I really don't relish the pages of Brigit Polk's ramblings that have absolutely nothing to do about Andy's philsophy but are just cheap filler. It can be amusing but very boring. When his viewpoints are stumbled upon, they are uplifting, funny and are Warhol's best. I read them everyday when I wake up....right before work!
