5.0 von 5 Sternen a gem from the "big daddy" of German Romanticism
If I were to teach a comparative literature class, this work would definitely be on the agenda. It is one of the true classics of Romantic art. We tend to forget that in his own era, Goethe was regarded as the preeminent genius of European letters. There is ample reason for the adulation. Whether writing a travelogue (The Italian Journey), a play (Faust), or a novel...

2.0 von 5 Sternen my god this book is bad
I'll have to admit I didn't finish reading this book (I hope my comparative literature instructors aren't reading this). It is boring, about four rich people spending their time doing pretty much nothing in Germany. If possible, try the Cliff's Notes.
There are a few quotable quotes, giving it an extra star from me.

If I were to teach a comparative literature class, this work would definitely be on the agenda. It is one of the true classics of Romantic art. We tend to forget that in his own era, Goethe was regarded as the preeminent genius of European letters. There is ample reason for the adulation. Whether writing a travelogue (The Italian Journey), a play (Faust), or a novel (Wether, Elective Affinities, Wilhelm Meister's Apprenticeship), Goethe is the consummate artist. Personally, my only complaint about Goethe was that he didn't think much of Beethoven's music. Maybe we can attribute it to genius jealousy. However you feel about the man, you can not call yourself well-read if you haven't at least exposed yourself to Goethe's writing. Give this one a chance and you'll probably want to read more by this great (and I don't use that term loosely) writer.

5.0 von 5 Sternen A Must Read For All Lovers of the Romantic Period!!!!, 27. März 1999

Rezension bezieht sich auf: Elective Affinities (Penguin Classics) (Taschenbuch)
Elective Affinities is a must read book for all lovers of the romantic period!!! This book is filled with wonderful insights into the human psyche, love, conflict, and their common connections with the external world, and those we share it with; it is overflowing with philosophical thoughts. I could never give this book, or Goethe, enough praise.--It is a shame the person also reviewing this book began it as a task rather than an adventure. Most of this book is, as other books written by Goethe: composed from his personal experiences, and which were once only jottings in his diary; hence, it is real, and not to be compared with a contemopary soap opera (such as Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice). YES, a must read. I also recommend Goethe's The Sorrow of Young Werther.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Life is Hell, 8. Januar 2000
Rezension bezieht sich auf: Elective Affinities (Penguin Classics) (Taschenbuch)
This wierd and wonderful book resides at the top of my all time favorite list. Its the story of life after the perfect wedding. Its the antidote to the American fairytale (they all lived happily ever after). Its wonderful writing, bracing and horrifying the way real life is.

This is a wonderfully subtle piece of writing. It's almost a shame it is overshadowed by the more renowned Faust, because this book is a great work of romance era writing in its own right. I highly recommend it.
