When you read Haroun and the sea of Stories, the thing you marvel at is Rushdie's imagination for starters, his wonderful wit, and the way he weaves words into a wondrous tapestry.....its a PROCESS TOO COMPLICATED TOO EXPLAIN :)
A brilliant story, an all time classic. You never wish for it to end..and when it does, and you close the book and drift off to sleep, the story picks up again in your dreams....After reading Haroun, you'll have the most relaxing night of sleep in a long time.

Haroun's father is a storyteller. Now everone tells stories now and then, but Rashid Khalifa does it for a living. And he is good at it. But this doesn't impress young Horoun, who thinks he is just telling a bunch of tall tales, and says so. But then his father, the famous „Shah of Blah", looses his gift. Haroun is swept away by Iff the water genie to visit the ocean of stories and bring the gift of storytelling back to his father. But, as always with a good story, ther's more to that...
„Haroun and the Sea of Stories" is one of the best books ever written. It is funny, enchanting, even wierd at some points, and it grips you and never lets you go again. If you don't believe me, ask my mother, or my brother, or my friends or anyone who has read this wonderful book!It rivals "The Last Unicorn", which, coming from me, is saying a lot! A wonderful children's tale. A political satire. A fable of freedom of expression. Wonderfully written. Extraordinary use of words.

An enchanting childrens' story that readers of any age will enjoy. This was the first Rushdie work that I read. It is a great primer of Rushdie's writing style, which, in it's dramatic changes of rhythm, setting, pace, and even language, can be a bit hard to follow to the unfamiliar reader. A future bedtime story for whenever I have children of my own....

'Haroun and the Sea of Stories' tells the story of the storyteller Rashid Khalifa and his only child Haroun. Rashid is well known and beloved, because he carries fortune and happiness into the hearts of people. He also touches or warns them with stories of great emotion or morals. Rashid tells stories of princesses and magicians. Rashid Khalifa is the Ocean of Notions, the famous Shah of Blah - or should I say 'was' for Rashid has lost his special ingredient of storytelling - the Story Water (but that's a P2C2E - a Process Too Complicated To Explain)...
Haroun told his father that there is no use in telling a story that is not true - that broke his father's heart and he lost his skill of storytelling. Now it's up to Haroun to help his father: He travelles with the Water Genie Iff to the second moon of Earth...
Salman Rushdie tells us a wonderful story of great emotion and enchantment. He borrows from many different sources and authors like Jule Verne or even The Beatles. I loved the book with its sad and funny moments. It is one of the best books I've ever read.

Though I have read and enjoyed novels from On the Road to The Shipping News to The Iliad, I keep coming back to this simple, charming, lucid masterpiece. The children-oriented theme might put off some adult readers, but not those who can still remember what it was like to be a child, to have hopes and dreams, and to want, even if you can't anymore, to believe in stories. I didn't believe that stories when I read Haroun, but more than any other book, it has made me see the power of a good story. It didn't change my life completely or anything nearly so drastic, but it did help to restore my faith in good books and fun stories and encouraged me to keep reading. I read it for the first time during my sophomore year in high school, and now as a college student, it remains my favorite. Please, read this book. You won't regret it.

Having no idea what to read for my Englisch literature list for school, I asked a teacher for help. He said he liked Rushdie a lot and that I could read it with no problem. It was indeed a great pleasure to read Haroun and the sea of stories as it takes you to other dimensions than you usualy expect in a dream. But it is not only a dream, but also a comparison with real life, good and bad, nature and evil. If you want to walk in this other dimension, than this book is recomended.

This is another terrific story for those who loved the Polar Express. It is a imilar tale of adventure inside a story framework with real effects in the world outside. It is humorous in sophisticated ways, and meaningful.
I highly recommend the book on tape, read by the author. I actually heard this before I read it, and Rushdie's narrative style is ideal for a story such as this. It's also my son's favorite story in the car

A wonderfully imaginative and inventive tale "Too Difficult To Describe And Too Complex To Explain".

I picked up this book expecting Rushdie to be serious and philosophical. Instead I found a fascinating writer who works on so many levels. The book is serious and funny. It is satiric and fascinating. His use of the English language is spectacular. I keep thinking Disney should buy the rights and animate, but then that may just be a tacky, American thing to do. Either way, a great read recommended to anybody 10-100.
