5.0 von 5 Sternen The C Programming Bible
As many of the other reviews, I praise this book. This book claim it is not intended for novices, something many other reviewers have confirmed. But I think that is underestimating novices. From knowing very little about programming (read .bat files), I became quite fluent in C by just reading this book. It give a complete picture of the C language, ande the code...

3.0 von 5 Sternen Not for beginners
I honestly do not understand the rave reviews. This book is only good for someone who has been programming before and just needs a quick reference. If you understand this book from beginning to end and are able to do all the problems then you are a darn good programmer and maybe that is its intent. It does state that this book is not for beginners and that access to a...

5.0 von 5 Sternen The Greatest Programming Book of All Time . . ., 26. Dezember 1998
Von Ein Kunde
Rezension bezieht sich auf: The C Programming Language. (Prentice Hall Software) (Taschenbuch)
I read this book a year ago, when I was 13, as my first exposure to programming. All I can say is wonderful!!! This book has taught me the entire C Programming Language, just as the title says. After reading this book, you will know everything, and what you don't know can be easily looked up in a book such as the equally excellent C Reference Manual. Right now I know C, C++, and Visual Basic; I don't think I could have learned anything if I hadn't bought this book.
If you're planning on buying this book as your first, beware that it's kind of like concentrated orange juice; don't expect to finish it in just a few sittings. I myself took about 2 weeks to finish the book; I think that after every chapter you should spend some time testing out your newfound skills.

4.0 von 5 Sternen The book required by every C programmer, 29. Mai 1999
Von Ein Kunde
Rezension bezieht sich auf: The C Programming Language. (Prentice Hall Software) (Taschenbuch)
This book is the best book a serious C programmer can ever buy. The books that you get these days like learn in 24 hours or a week, are big fat, look good, teach a lot of graphics, but lack in true C content. But this one, is life time reference. Initially I found it disappointing, because it did not cover graphics, low level assembly. But as I began serious programming in C, I found this to be a life time reference. Any doubts, debates, .. go to this book. The authors also give a reference manual, if you do not want to read the book again. The exercises are challanging and very very creative. An expert should have this book and a beginner who buys this, is on his way to becoming an expert.

5.0 von 5 Sternen The Best Ever, For All The Languages Existing in The World!, 26. November 1999
Once upon a time, I found this book in a library somewhere, I picked it up and fell in love with it. And couldn't wait to buy myself a copy.
And, as far as I have read, this is definitely the best book on any language, not just programming language (as I have read a lot of book the teach Spanish & German, and still can't find any that as good as this book :-)
Buy this book if you are a programmer, not just C programmer, but any language. As a C++ and Java programmer, I found this book very helpful with a lot of things. It might be difficult in the first place, but once you understand it, you will find yourself in a new world fo programming.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Best EVER, in ANY Language (not just programming language!), 19. Oktober 1999
Von Ein Kunde
Rezension bezieht sich auf: The C Programming Language. (Prentice Hall Software) (Taschenbuch)
I read this book several years ago, and it is the BEST book on any language I've ever read. Actually, I'm not a C programmer, but a C++, and I never attemp to learn C. Anyway, it's not C that I learned from this book. What I learned from this book was HOW TO PROGRAM, which is more important than the language. If you really want to be a programmer, this is the book you MUST read, at least TWICE in your life. :-)
PS. To those who prefered the "For Dummies" books, you will never become anything else, but a dummy. Try reading this one after finish those, OK? :-)

5.0 von 5 Sternen A superb classic, 26. März 2000

Rezension bezieht sich auf: The C Programming Language. (Prentice Hall Software) (Taschenbuch)
I found this book excellent for learning and as a reference to C. It is clear, concise, and gets right to the point. One of the most important books in computer programming. Perhaps the only problem with this book is that modern students need to learn C++ (and/or Java), and C is only a subset. Indeed some of C's old-fashioned constructs are inferior to modern replacements found in C++. For this reason, one may consider this book dated. I just wish someone could write so well about C++.

5.0 von 5 Sternen This is _the_ C book, 27. Dezember 1999
Rezension bezieht sich auf: The C Programming Language. (Prentice Hall Software) (Taschenbuch)
This book is the absolute best book on C (...on anything?) that I have ever read. This book is extremely to the point and does a good job of telling you what you need to know. Brian Kernighan and Dennis Ritchie did a supurb job on this one. (In case you didn't know Dennis Ritchie and Ken Thompson developed UNIX. Brian Kerninghan and Dennis Ritche developed C so these guys have been around) I can say with absolute honesty that this is the best C book that has ever graced my bookshelf.

5.0 von 5 Sternen This is the C book for UNIX users., 14. Juni 2010
While maybe not showing extensions of various UNIX flavors it also does not clutter with .net and other temporally contrived notions that inhibit portability.

Some people refer to this as the "c" bible. Written by Brian W. Kernighan, and Dennis Ritchie, well known in the C and UNIX field. This book is not cluttered with C++ forcing you to figure out what part is "c".

You may think that this book is not for beginners. However it is actually more of a combination of dictionary and "The Elements of Style" for the "c" language

This does of course include ANSI c, which is transportable to all platforms. It also states that", since the ANSI C library is in many cases modeled on UNIX facilities, this may help your understanding of the library as well."

The language it's self as with any language has its strong points. The main one being pointers. By not duplicating data and not having to movie it all around the application can be lightning fast and the code tight and to the point. Other advantages of the language are pointed out as with bit shifting.

This book should be used as a prerequisite to c communications books.

5.0 von 5 Sternen A good book for programmers with some experience!, 5. November 1997
Rezension bezieht sich auf: The C Programming Language. (Prentice Hall Software) (Taschenbuch)
I find this book to be excellently suited for programmers with a reasonably good experience in programming. I feel that this book would not be the one that I would recommend for beginners. A simple familiarity with basic programming concepts I feel, would NOT be adequate for a thorough utilization of this book. On the other hand, important concepts like pointers, structures, memory addressing have been dealt with very well in this book, and from a different direction than what I have seen in other C books. I also feel that the book teaches good programming methodology in an indirect way, through numerous examples, which have been written very concisely. For example, a program for string comparison, has been written so concisely in just a few lines that it does cause wonder at how neatly a program can be written. There are numerous such other examples throughout the book. To sum up, I feel that this book would be best approached to, AFTER gaining some initial feel in programming. I also find this book to be a good place for a quick and concise reference in programming situations.

4.0 von 5 Sternen The ultimate book in C but beginners beware, 21. Februar 2000

Rezension bezieht sich auf: The C Programming Language. (Prentice Hall Software) (Taschenbuch)
Undoubtedly the most authoritative book on C and that should come as no surprise seeing who the authors are BUT definitely not a book for beginners. This book is great for someone who has taken at least 1 C course.

5.0 von 5 Sternen The _DEFINITION_ of C, not a "learn in 12 steps" program., 24. September 1999
Von
Rezension bezieht sich auf: The C Programming Language. (Prentice Hall Software) (Taschenbuch)
This is, contrary to the Australian and SF reviewers below, the book that defines what is the C programing language, by the people who created the C programing language. What seems to have been missed is that this is not a happy-happy joy-joy "We'll hold your hand while you stumble through a book written for elementary school children, that teaches you trivial concepts about programing while learning nothing substantive."
This book is not for amateurs nor newbies. Reviews that criticize it for that are from people who simply have no clue.
It is quite simply the most important resource for programming in C for anyone who is actually concerned about the actual definition and capabilities of the language. You can in fact learn C by reading this book, but I wouldn't recommend it for that. I would recommend it to someone who knows how to program, knows the basics of C, and needs a reference for "how things really work, deep down in the core of the langauge."
