4.0 von 5 Sternen historical but still touching, 9. Dezember 2011
Rezension bezieht sich auf: The Worst Journey in the World (Vintage Classics) (Taschenbuch)
The worst journey describes the whole 3-year-length of the polar journey during which Robert F. Scott and four companions reached the South Pole - but perished on the way back. Apsley Cherry-Garrard was one of the members of the expedition but did not go all the way to the pole. The title "worst journey" does not refer to the polar journey itself, but on the winter journey in the polar winter before Scott and others started to reach the pole. In this winter journey Cherry-Garrard and Birdie Bowers joined Dr. Bill Wilson, one of the expedition's scientist on the search for the emperor penguin's egg in a penguin rookery about 67 miles away from their winter-quarters. However, also the polar journey and the likely causes for the tragic end are discussed.
The book is a historical account - exertion and equipment cannot be compared to the modern times. But still, I found it fascinating and touching. In some parts, especially in the forwords, it is a bit lenghty, but once the expedition has left England it get's really gripping. Therefore, it is definately worth reading!
