5.0 von 5 Sternen Autobiography Shows Author's "Wilde" Side Growing Up
Moab Is My Washpot by British comedian Stephen Fry is at turns sly, funny and laced with a poignancy which reveals a hauntingly human side to a man whose writing talent and comedic prowess makes him intellectually intimidating.
In the book we learn of how Fry was turned out of prep and public school, his jaunt around England as a forger of credit card signatures,...

3.0 von 5 Sternen Difficult to put down.
Self indulgent, often like a prolonged therapy session with an unbelievably spoiled ten year old and difficult to put down. After I read this autobiography I noticed with real surprise that I had also read Hippopotamus, The Liar and Making History, and had probably read each in one sitting. It was the same surprise I got when I realized one day I had read virtually...

5.0 von 5 Sternen Not Just For Gay Brit Actor/Writers, 2. Oktober 1999
Von Ein Kunde
Fry's memoir is not about a subject I'd ordinarily have any interest in reading: a relatively affluent Englishman's reminiscences. Combine that with more than a few obscure "insider" references and English idioms, and I decided to read twenty pages and then quit. But Fry's writing and sensibility was so fluent, funny and intriguing that I ended up reading it through in one afternoon. Amazing how skillful writers can transport you temporarily into their worlds! Ah!

5.0 von 5 Sternen Thoughts about life hidden in an autobiography, 6. September 1999
Von Ein Kunde
As you will read in other reviews, Fry gives an extremely funny and sensitive account of his first 20 years.
What is less often pointed out is that he writes very intelligently about morality in an accessible and light-hearted way. This book contains hidden gems of social comment, and puts many of the sensitive issues it covers in an interesting perspective.
A quick and highly recommended read.

5.0 von 5 Sternen A beautiful, funny and eye-opening read, 10. Dezember 1998
This has to be the best book that I've read in a LONG time (and I read a lot of books!). I simply could not put it down. I can imagine many narrow-mined types are not going to appreciate Mr. Fry's directness, honesty and joy in recounting his story with such humour and descriptive gusto but I for one LOVED it. I just can't wait for the story on his next 20 years. Well done Mr. Fry.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Don't read it in public - people will stare!!, 28. Juni 1999
Von Ein Kunde
After picking this up on a business trip in Manchester, I had to stop reading it while in public - I was either laughing out loud or softly crying during this incredible story. Only Fry could have this outrageous life! I cannot wait for the tale about his next 20 years.
An absolute must read book for anyone who has enjoyed any of his other works, written or performance!

I usually don't do the whole autobiography thing, but I saw Fry in "Peter's Friends" and wanted to know more about him. He's huge in London, and when I bought the book there and read it I began to see him everywhere. After reading his history, you'll want so badly to know this man, and become familiar with every one of his works. Read it, read it, read it!

4.0 von 5 Sternen Fry tells his sad story cheerfully, 7. November 1999
Von Ein Kunde
This is probably the most entertaining and unusual autobiography I have ever read, despite some excess navel gazing and a few grammatical errors. He is a courgeous person and a courageous author. As a great fan of Fry's comedic and acting abilities, I look forward to the volume(s) containing his account of the second twenty years of his life (and so forth).

Rezension bezieht sich auf: Moab is My Washpot (Taschenbuch)
I got impressed by Stephen Fry from the Harry potter audiobook which I was hearing some months back. Started researching little bit and found this book about his autobiography. I did had trouble understanding his English... but it was Stephen Fry... his style... that's the beauty of this book. I just loved it... haven't completed the book, but there were lots of times where I was sitting in my couch and laughing madly, with my boy friend giving an annoying look. Then I would read the book for him.. then we would both end up in laughing for the next 10 minutes. I would recommend this book to anyone.. who want to forget all their troubles...... and get into his childhood life :-)
Have fun reading.

5.0 von 5 Sternen A book that gives you laughter & tears, just like life., 30. März 1999
Von Ein Kunde
I am not male, gay or British, yet I understood and shared the feelings of Stephen Fry in this his autobiography. The man is a true wordsmith, I love the way he plays with words, the way an artist does with paint. I cried in many places, and laughed out loud in more, on this journey through Stephen's fiirst 20 years. A truly wonderful read.

I read the English paperback of this book and I found it a riot! I really love Fry as Jeeves so I was very interested in who this guy was! Well he is a wonderful writer as well as a fine actor. This is a good summer read! However, I read it during my winter vacation. I loved every minute of it. Enjoy!

4.0 von 5 Sternen Lighthearted seriousness, 22. September 1999
Von Ein Kunde
Like raisins in a pudding, Fry drops dollops of well-reasoned reflection into his hilarious recollection of his not entirely light-hearted youth. The section about British public school education and the resultant 'undeveloped heart' of the British middle classes is particularly apt.
