Hallo zusammen,

Survivor ist ein Buch der besonderen Art. Wer sich für Mainstream-Artikel interessiert, sollte wohl Chuck Palahniuks Werke im Regel lassen, denn Tabus vermag dieser Messias zu brechen. Wer Survivor liest, kommt nicht in den Genuss einer linearen Geschichte mit einem gekünstelten Ende. Survivor stellt Werte in Frage, selbst Religion, gehört dazu.

An Strenggläubige:
Wenn man die Argumentation von Atheisten liest, wird man möglichweise noch religiöser. Oder das Gegenteil ist der Fall.

Wer käme denn auf die Idee Telefonseelsorge der etwas anderen Art zu betreiben? Die Kinder haben schlechte Noten? Bring dich um. Deine Frau hat dich verlassen? Bring dich um! Der Motor deines Wagens springt nicht an?

Sie wissen die Antwort mittlerweile.

Das Video gibt die Atmosphäre des Buchs sehr gut wieder.

Sie werden merken, dass wir in einer Dienstleistungsgesellschaft leben, geprägt von Konsum und falschen Fassaden. Diese Geschichte ist kunstvoll verpackt in Kapitel, die Unausgesprochenes verkünden. Der Protagonist arbeitet für zwei Banker als 'Hausmann' bzw. als Mann für Alles WIRkLICH alles. Er wurde gezüchtet, um zu dienen. Vergewaltigt, um Masturbation zu verabscheuen.

Er weiß, was wirklich von Bedeutung im Leben ist und was für eine Form der Bildung eigentlich in unserer Welt zählt.

Vom einfachen Mann zum Medien-Messias.

Pahlaniuk hat meiner Auffassung nach voll ins Schwarze getroffen und neben der Satire kommt der Unterhaltungswert keinesfalls zu kurz. Ich habe das Buch wahrlich verschlungen und dies ist meist ein Indikator für großartige Lektüre.

Vielen Dank, dass Sie sich Zeit genommen haben meine Bewertung von Survivor zu lesen.
Vielleicht werden auch Sie es sein, der später meine Romane zu lesen vermag. Wer weiß.
Aber bis dahin werden sich noch viele Menschen umbringen, weil andere sie dazu ermutigen.
Die Welt ist doch so .. innovativ.

Well, Chuck Palahniuk has done it again! With Survivor, he has taken the reader even deeper into the unspoken pop deitrus with his cynical and morose prose. Don't worry, the wrenching in your stomach is normal, the energy in your bloodstream is to be expected, and the weight of the bizarre is just enough to still keep you balanced.

Palahniuk has created a survivor, of a creedish death cult, who has become something more ugly: a celebrity. He constantly challenges all that we in this society accept on face value, who we choose to celebrate. In this way, the narrator, narrating his story into a flight recorder of a plane as it heads into a mountain, brings you into his obscure little world of drugs, exercise, and fame. So far in fact, that your world begins to look much more appealing than under the lights.

Survivor is not Fight Club. They have the same elements, the decay of society, stripping the flesh to the bone to see what it all really looks like, not what people tell us. The desire to break the chains and work on instinct. but, the details of this novel are far more interesting than fight club. Survivor asks the reader to judge what is the purpose of a life, to accept it, or to change it. you have no way out but to choose.

Be daring, be open to new perspectives, be someone who doesn't turn a smirk at a novel like this because it is strange and a little morbid. Be the one who takes the chance, accepting that not everyone thinks or feels the same as you. Be an owner of this book.

Palahniuks Roman lässt sich nicht wirklich zusammenfassen oder in ein bestimmtes Schema einordnen. Am bestens trifft es da noch MacBeths Abrechnung am Schluss des Dramas: "It is a tale/Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury/Signifying nothing."

Der Roman beginnt mit Kapitel 47 auf Seite 287 und endet auf Seite 1 mit dem Tod des Protagonisten. So viel weiß der Leser nach Lektüre der ersten Sätze. Dazwischen erzählt uns Tender Brenson, ein absoluter Verlierer, seine Lebensgeschichte. Aufgewachsene als Mitglied einer Sekte religiöser Fanatiker, verbringt er sein Leben in der wirklichen Welt damit den Rasen reicher Leute zu mähen und Leuten am Telefon den Rat zu geben sich gefälligst umzubringen. Als sich herausstellt, dass er der letzte Überlebende seiner Sekte ist, promotet ihn ein Fernsehsender zum Erlöser der Welt. Mit Hilfe einer hellseherisch veranlagten Freundin, übrigens die Schwester eines seiner Selbstmordkandidaten, sagt er regelmäßig Unglücke voraus und wird damit erst recht zum Star. Außer Kontrolle gerät das Ganze spätestens, als er in der Halbzeit des Super Bowls das Endergebnis verrät.

Alles verstanden? Nicht? Gut, denn sonst hätte ich irgendetwas falsch gemacht. "Survivor" seziert die heuchlerische, selbstgerechte, gierige und ach so tiefreligiöse Natur der amerikanischen und anderer Gesellschaften. Provozierende Statements a la Fight Club animieren jeden Leser, das Buch sinken zu lassen und einfach mal nachzudenken. Beispiel:

"If Jesus had died in prison, with no one watching and with no one there to mourn or torture him, would we be saved?"

"The biggest factor that makes you a saint is the amount of press coverage you get."

"The key to salvation is how much attention you get. How high a profile you get. Your audience share. Your exposure. Your name recognition. Your press following."

Blasphemie? Wahrheit? Schund? Gute Literatur? Wahrscheinlich ein bisschen von allem, aber zumindestens eins. Ein geiles Lesevergnügen!! Zurecht wird Palahniuk mit Auster, DeLillo, Ellis und Vonnegut verglichen. Aber er ist ehrlicher, direkter, zynischer, perverser und brutaler. Sprich, er ist genau das, was wir brauchen, um nicht völlig vom Unterschichtenfernsehen eingelullt zu werden.

Chuck Palaniuk (say it ten times fast) has recently stormed onto the popular literary field, thanks to David Fincher's amazing adaptation of his underground novel, FIGHT CLUB. Hopefully, if he keeps writing books this good, he can give up being a mechanic forever.

SURVIVOR begins on its final page, and shoots backwards towards page 1, always reminding you of its approaching demise. Along with the novel, the narrator is apporaching his own demise, as he pilots a commandeered airplane waiting for it to crash and explode. In order to preserve his life story, he is speaking into the black-box on-flight recorder, hoping to wipe himself out and attain immortality at the same time.

What is his problem? Well, he is the last survivor of a suicide cult, a former indentured servant in the "real world". He also narrates of his tranistion from nobody to media messiah back to nobody. In it, Palahniuk takes on a wild ride through a satire of modern society in all its little nuances. Everything from Lobster eating to TV networks gets raked over the coals in this incediary novel.

ALthough the book, like FIGHT CLUB begins to self-destruct about three quarters of the way through, the story is so compelling in its banal gruesomeness that you can't help but read it. Palahniuk is a magician who will keep you hypnotized, glued to each page until the final end of both his protagonist and the book.

Oh, and did I mention that the book is also riotously funny? It is. So in other words, one of the best books I've read in awhile.

There were lots of rave reviews for this novel, however I found the book was not living up to my expectations. Yes, it will make you turn the pages, but it leaves you with a bad taste on your mouth when you reflect on it. It reads like an average movie--you aren't riveted at all (you CAN put the book down), and are easily distracted (hmm, maybe I should go do [fill-in-the-boring-chore] now). The sex is superfluous and doesn't mean anything, as though only to 'fill the quota' of sex expected in books these days. I would suggest reading it so you can get your OWN feel for it, there is an interesting idea underneath the extras (phone sex, drinking, etc.), but Palahniuk isn't skilled enough to work the interesting plot line throught the story in a way that would keep the reader interested.

To put it short: Palahniuk's "sequel" to his debut novel Fight Club proved worth reading! I think it equals it at least!

In a dense and vivid language the author describes the life story of his main character, the last member of a horrendous cult. We all know that his fate will lead him to ultimate disaster from the beginning on. Don't be afraid, the novel is suspenseful on another level: While reading the hero's retrospects we come across different sorts of social criticism all the time.

Palahniuk's terrific imaginations deliver criticism in a effective, sarcastic and mostly amusing tone. So if you liked this part in Fight Club, you won't be disappointed with Survivor!

The end comes fast for Palahniuk's tragical hero and so do I close my review already thinking about the many new ideas this great novel inspired in me. Great read, enjoy!

As I imagined, this book's a bit of a strange surreal ride. It's written as a countdown, with lots of recall situations. The story is not as challenging to follow as it sounds, or as I expected - from fight club.It feels more like a book from a film, but it does have a couple of good twists. Definitely an interesting read.

I was still impressed by Fight Club when I started reading Survivor. Now, after having finished Survivor, I'm proud to say: I've got a new favorite author. The style Palahniuk wrote this book simply knocked me out. Never have I been so excited while reading a book. The only thing disturbing me was that the end is quite predictable for the story isn't as open-ended as "Fight Club". But all in all it fits just good into this novel. Another masterpiece from Chuck Palahniuk...

This is a great book.. Everyone else's reviews pretty much sum it up. I just wanted to add something that just came to me...

The next setting for the hit TV show SURVIVOR is going to take place in the Austrailian Outback... and in this book called SURVIVOR the plane Tender Branson is on crashes into the Austrailian outback. Chuck Palahniuk has now show me something beautiful on two levels. Hopefully people will order this Survivor thinking it's the book for the TV show.

Once again Palahniuk manages to make a bizarre, convoluted story believable. A perfect commentary on what makes a 'star' in today's world and how what you see is definitely not always what you are really getting.
