Although I found some of the anecdotal information in the book interesting and informative, overall I found "Judge Judy" to be condescending, inappropriate, and generally infuriating.
I have two major problems with the content of this book, which is obviously written for laypersons with no knowledge of the legal system.
First, all her observations are based on anecdotal encounters with people IN COURT. Has it occured to anyone else that, while there are always people who scam the system or are dishonest, that MOST PEOPLE DON'T END UP IN COURT?!? Therefore, all her observations are biased because she never sees the people who don't have some problem that lands them in front of a judge.
And secondly, I am ashamed of the type of vigilant law she brags about. Denying people their constitutional rights and supplementing the information in a case with rumors from the legal community are only two examples of ways in which she ultimately undermines the basic ! principles of our judicial system. She seems to have the idea that anyone who doesn't model their lives after what white, educated, upper-middle class professionals believe is appropriate, must be some kind of animal who needs to be "whipped into shape." I find this ethnocentricism sickening. While I'm grateful that she is no longer ruining people's lives in Family Court, I am not happy that a whole generation of vigilanty right-wing legal buffs is being bred in living rooms across the country.

Rezension bezieht sich auf: Don't Pee on My Leg and Tell Me It's Raining: America's Toughest Family Court Judge Speaks Out (Taschenbuch)
This humorous but pithy little volume addresses many of the problems faced by American families and taxpayers. Yes, the two are intertwined. From her unique perspective as a family court judge, Judge Judy presents the sometimes humorous, sometimes sad, sometimes poignant plight of the American family as it has evolved over the past decades. By bringing her no nonsense approach to both the bench and book, she spotlights that we, the American public, need to re-examine our good intentions and add a healthy dose of reality to our attempts to help those less fortunate than ourselves. She offers realistic, sensible approaches which, if applied, would help people to become more self-sufficient rather than more dependent on government for prolonged assistance which has come to be treated as an entitlement rather than temporary help.

Whether one agrees with all her premises or not, she offers a breath of fresh air to a stale situation which has only grown worse over the last several decades.

This volume should be required reading for all those who believe that throwing money at the problems bedeviling families in this country can be cured by more programs or more monetary entitlements.

One might add that if a few politicians and judges as well as social workers spent an hour or two with this book, it might offer fresh insights into less costly and more productive solutions to the problems that plague our society.

5.0 von 5 Sternen It's about time....people pay for their own lives!, 12. April 1998
I read the book Don't Pee on My Leg and Tell Me It's Raining. It was very enlightening. If I were a welfare recipient, I would have found more ways to bilk the system I was unaware of. The Kinship programs were something I have never heard of, because in my family, if you have a child, you raise that child. You work for a living, and you pay for your mistakes. I get so tired of people getting a free ride at my expense. I see it everyday, and just like Judge Judy, I'm tired of seeing... I'm tired of coming home from work to find all the neighborhood kids running over, after all, mommy has been having to put up with them all day, so why not sent them here, to bother me who was working all day. I'm tired of seeing welfare recipients in grocery lines, that have two carts full of brand names I can't afford, and things like steak, and all the snacks they can get. I would hope everyone would read this book, and feel the same way I do, but chances are, some of the readers will be bilkers of the system. They will be outraged that someone has questioned them. I wish there could be some swift reforms to make people stop playing victims, and start taking responsibility for their lives.

4.0 von 5 Sternen JUDGE JUDY FOR PRESIDENT..., 31. Dezember 2004
Von
I have to admit that I am in complete agreement with Judge Judy. She is a tough talking, no nonsense, commom sense oriented individual, who believes in personal responsibility and acountability. What you see on the television screen, if you watch her show "Judge Judy", is what you find between the cover of this book.
The book covers a variety of social issues in the context of her legal and judicial experience, and she does a full court press in giving her opinions. Not given to judicial restraint, she speaks out on those issues to which her nearly quarter of a century experience as a judge has entitled her. I only wish that she were running for public office. She would certainly have my vote.
The only issue that I take with the book is that it is really not a cohesive entity. It is a somewhat disjointed collection of essays or opinions on various social issues that repeatedly came up during her years on the bench. There is no attempt to put them together into a broader context, so that one segues into the next. This is the one shortcoming of the book. Nonetheless, it is still an interesting read.

1.0 von 5 Sternen Entertaining but disturbing view of "justice", 1. Dezember 1998
Von Ein Kunde
This is an entertaining read about a feisty, energetic, and committed woman, who would be totally admirable if it were not for the disquieting view of justice she holds. The cases seem to be very often decided without sufficient, or indeed any, evidence from unbiased third parties, and without any safeguards against her own personal prejudices. As a reviewer, it is not my place to say that any paricular judgement is wrong, but, in view of the apparent arbitrariness and weighting of the scales against "abnormals", it would not surprise me to see at least 60% of verdicts overturned in a higher court. Her admittedly entertaining rhetoric and repartee can often seduce the "audience" into an "us vs. them" frame of mind, an effect which she has consciously magnified by allowing televization. Something is seen to be done: but is it justice? A dangerous precedent in my opinion.

5.0 von 5 Sternen I Love Judge Judy, 30. Dezember 1998
Von
When I heard that Judge Judy wrote a book, I ran to the computer and ordered it. I have never missed a Judge Judy show. I am sixteen, and I go to private school and get out at 4:37 everyday. But do I ever stay a full day? No. I have to cut last period every day, so I can make it home on time. I go around my school making everybody a Judge Judy fan. I can immitate her saying all her great lines like, " She's allowed to have an attitude, she's the boss applesauce" "Don't lie to me, im a truth machine", "Berts never wrong with the calculator sir", "you picked him maddam", " thats not sexual harrassment, you were saying NO NO, YES YES" Judge Judy's book is just as good as the show, I finnished it in three days, I couldn't put it down. Judge Judy is my idle, and if you get into her show and read her book, she'll be yours too! Buy the book.

5.0 von 5 Sternen In-Your-Face Honesty, 1. Dezember 1998

Rezension bezieht sich auf: Don't Pee on My Leg and Tell Me It's Raining: America's Toughest Family Court Judge Speaks Out (Taschenbuch)
I have read Judge Judy's book from the library and now am going to purchase a copy not only for myself but for Christmas gifts. I have worked in the legal system for ten years and people didn't believe that the things Judge Judy brought to light really took place. Even more frustrating was to see how "juris prudence" handled some of the worst courtroom etrocities with kid gloves. I have the utmost respect for the Honorable Judge Sheindlin. She has the unique ability to combine extraordinary insight, intellect, compassion, legal expertise, and COMMON SENSE. She also has the answers for our dysfunctional society. Please read this book and pass it along. We'll all benefit. As my ten-year-old puts it, "Judge Judy kicks bootie!" Judge Judy...Encore!!!

5.0 von 5 Sternen The book was "BAD! " (meaning great!), 19. November 1999
Rezension bezieht sich auf: Don't Pee on My Leg and Tell Me It's Raining: America's Toughest Family Court Judge Speaks Out (Taschenbuch)
This book should be on EVERY book shelf in America! I've read it twice. matter of fact, I purchased both books that were written by Judge Judy. I have so much respect for her because she tells it just like it SHOULD be told. As I watch her t.v. program, it amazes me to see how families could sue one another! I would NEVER sue any members of my family. I've learned many things from watching her program. Among many, these are at the top of the line: NEVER, EVER loan family members money and NEVER, EVER co-sign for ANYBODY to buy anything! I strongly practice these two important lessons. If I choose to help a family member, you can bet your last dollar, it will be a gift! This way, I'll never expect repayment, and our friendship will remain in tact!

4.0 von 5 Sternen Wake up responsible citizens of this world!, 5. Juli 2000
Rezension bezieht sich auf: Don't Pee on My Leg and Tell Me It's Raining: America's Toughest Family Court Judge Speaks Out (Taschenbuch)
Judge Judy, labelled as America's toughest family court judge, tells us in her book some amusing and amazing stories that she has witnessed in her long career as a family court judge. Eloquent with her words, illustrative with her stories and thought provoking with her insights, Judge Judy's values are simple: "Take responsibility for your actions." She says "If you want to eat, you have to work. If you have children, be prepared to take care of them. If you brake the law, be prepared to pay." She finishes her book by also saying that "the Constitution guarantees every citizen the right to pursue opportunity. It does not require the government to provide that opportunity." Wow...what a judge and what a book.
