I like the way Thomas Nagel writes - it's accessible for a general public, with very little jargon that would be incomprehensible to a non-philosopher. He's quite right to see the massive holes in the reductionist/materialist agenda. Consciousness is not just a 'spandrel' or side-effect of zombie-like evolution, to be embarassedly brushed under a materialist carpet. It's a massive effect and of huge importance for guiding the behaviour of all animals and especially humans, and may have been at least as, if not more important a factor than random selection effects for developing life on Earth.
