2.0 von 5 Sternen Predictable, 26. November 2011
The sad thing is, I really wanted to like this book. I've seen a lot of YA that doesn't take risks, doesn't go beyond puppy eyed love. From the blurb, this book seemed to be less silly, more real. I will say that there are elements that I liked--the author makes attempts to work creatively with language--but there were too many things that didn't work, and that made me decide I really do not need to read the sequel to this.

Before I go into more spoiler containing detail, let me just point out what I think is a central issue. So there is this guy, right? Bargains with people, gives them wishes for their teeth, and I mean their fucking _teeth._ And these wishes, they are magic,… Mehr dazu

1.0 von 5 Sternen Bad writing, thin plot, 28. Mai 2011
Apart from the obvious commercial factor in all this the first thing that annoys is the terrible writing style. Whoever the copy writer really is, (s)he uses present tense throughout and a first person narrator as well. However, the story does not feature enough action to warrant either. Wording and structures are unimaginative, as are descriptions and indeed the entire plot (good vs. bad, and who'd have thought? the bad guys are really all black whereas the good guys are really all white...). Characters lack depth and the narrative doesn't get the pace going or manage to keep up what it's got.

This is not good science fiction. There is nothing new in here, nothing unpredictable,… Mehr dazu

3.0 von 5 Sternen The Story Continues, 31. Oktober 2010
I might have given The Desert Spear a 3.5 but since I can only award whole stars, I gave the book a 3. It just does not feel like 4 stars to me.

The writing throughout is solid, the developments interesting, and I will be reading the sequel to this one. However, what really bothered me was that I did not feel that the author conveyed real understanding of what was going on in the minds of some of the characters or rather, I felt their reactions unnatural.

In this book, we have some characters who have been sexually abused. I found their reactions following that different to what I would imagine them to be. I understand that I am a woman and that the author is a man and… Mehr dazu
