As for me ... I suppose I'm best described as a life long dweller of that magic land where John Wayne and Tom Joad meet the gods and heroes of classic mythology and Shakespeare's dramas, where Bogey and Bacall sit down for a round of poker with Sherlock Holmes, Hercule Poirot, Miss Marple and Lord Peter Wimsey, and where Mr. Darcy and Captain Rhett Butler dance over the rainbow with Sheherazade and Emma Bovary:
Books, music and movies have been my great love ever since I was a kid — they are my number one source of inspiration, consolation and entertainment. Each story that I read, each play or movie I watch, and each piece of music I listen to offers me a new and different perspective on life. Many also open my eyes to worlds other than my own ... foreign countries and cultures, societies and people of centuries gone by, and creatures not constrained by the physical limitations of the world we know.
An avid traveler (as much as my cats allow me to leave them alone), I am also an amateur photographer and an enthusiastic hobby cook. After several years in the U.S. (the last three of those in Los Angeles, CA - but nothing to do with the entertainment industry), I have now returned to my native Germany. Here, for the time being I have settled in Bonn, the city where I grew up; though Berlin (where I was born and lived for close to 10 years before moving to the U.S.) remains close to my heart as well ... and I wouldn't rule out another move abroad eventually, either.
I started reviewing on Amazon.com in the summer of 2001 and mainly write about the pieces of music and the books and movies which have thoroughly impressed me, not necessarily only recently – things I also recommend to friends and family or give as presents. That is why most of the items I review get 4 or 5 star ratings. This is not to say that I don't appreciate well-written and informative 1- and 2-star reviews. However, since I don't even have nearly enough time to write about every item I would actually recommend, I am not particularly inclined to spend much of my own time reviewing mediocre things (although I do not rule out one day firing off scathing criticism on something which, on a scale from 1 to 5, I would rank a -10).

Imagine living in a world where life is governed by intricate rituals; a world "balanced so precariously that its harmony [can] be shattered by a whisper" (Wharton); a world ruled by self-declared experts on form, propriety and family history - read: scandal -; where everything is labeled and yet, people are not; where in order not to disturb society's smooth surface nothing is ever expressed or even thought of directly, and where communication occurs almost exclusively by way of symbols, which are unknown to the outsider and, like any secret code, by their very encryption guarantee his or her permanent exclusion.
Such, in faithful imitation of Victorian England, was the… Mehr dazu

Mark Knopfler obviously loves to write passacaglias -- pieces of music that start with a very basic theme, played by only one or very few instruments and, often over repeated crescendos and slow-downs, increasing in volume and instrumentation to a rousing finale, performed by either all instruments or the instrumental lead "voice;" in Knopfler's case of course his trademark Fender Strat. "Brothers in Arms" has elements of a passacaglia, and so does "Speedway to Nazareth" on his latest solo release, "Sailing to Philadelphia." His greatest achievement though, not only in this regard, has to be "Telegraph Road," the opening track of "Love Over Gold." In a little over 14 minutes, the song rises… Mehr dazu

Hamlet von William Shakespeare

William Shakespeare's "Hamlet" is arguably the most famous play ever written in the English language; presenting the world with questions and characters that have been the subject of thespian and scholarly debate ever since the Prince of Denmark's first appearance on the stage of London's Globe Theatre. Probably written and first performed in 1601 (estimates vary between 1600 and 1602), the play draws on Saxo Grammaticus's late 12th/early 13th century chronicle "Gesta Danorum," which includes a popular legend with a similar plot centering around a prince named Amleth; as well as several more contemporaneous sources, primarily Francois de Belleforest's "Histoires Tragiques, Extraicts des… Mehr dazu
