In a former career, I spent 27 years in the British Army. During that time (almost 40 years ago), I gained the highest qualifications as a scuba diver and instructor. I have led diving expeditions all over the world and was once placed in sole charge of the largest scuba diving project ever mounted anywhere in the world. I also breed and fly Birds of Prey, enjoy keeping fit, gardening, photography and occasionally building scale-model ships. Nowadays I am an underwater photo-journalist, shipwreck historian and award-winning, best-selling, author. With a few notable exceptions, the books I review are limited to subjects which match my knowledge and experience.
Unfortunately, as far as scuba diving is concerned, there are far too many books on the market where an inferior product is often hidden behind excellent photography. It takes someone with a knowledge of that specific industry, therefore, to separate the good from the bad and the ugly.
Every single book I review commences with 5 stars – which do not have to be earned, only retained! Every one of my reviews contains a clear explanation of why that particular product is so rated. This is because I believe the customer has a right to know which books are worth buying and which are not. My ratings are honest and clear and if they have assisted you in any way (or not!) please cast the appropriate vote of either "Yes" or "No." Thank you and be safe.
If you review books (or other products) please be prepared to give an honest appraisal.

First published in 1978 by the World Ship Society (WSS), this is a most useful list of those Soviet Passenger ships from the period 1917-1977. The information for most vessels, however, is confined to two or three lines of abbreviated detail which includes; Year of completion, builder, Tonnage, dimensions, machinery, No of propellers and carrying capacity. Finally, under `Remarks' we find the briefest possible comments about each vessel. And when I say "briefest," this is sometimes abbreviated to nothing more than the name of the ship's owners although, in some cases, it includes a potted history. Nevertheless, there are two, often quite excellent, historic photographs on almost… Mehr dazu

In September 1943, six British miniature submarines called X-Craft were towed to Norway by parent submarines. X-5, 6 & 7 were to attack the Tirpitz, X-8 the pocket battleship Lützow and X-9 & 10 the Scharnhorst. X-9 was lost en route, X-8 was scuttled shortly after arrival and X-10 was so beset with technical problems her attack was abandoned and was later scuttled during the tow back to Scotland because of bad weather. Of the remaining attack on the Tirpitz, X-6 and X-7 succeeded in placing their charges below the ship before becoming disabled and having to surface. All four crew of X-6 abandoned their vessel safely but only two escaped the sinking X-7. The six survivors were taken on… Mehr dazu

As part of my ongoing research, I came to this work by a most circuitous route only to find a single ex-library copy for sale at a price I could not afford. Eventually, however, I obtained a copy in inter-library loan and as I settled down to read the work soon realised I had found a real gem. Sydney Robert Fremantle was born in 1867 and came from a family with strong naval traditions; his great-grandfather Admiral Sir Thomas Fremantle (1765-1819) had been a favourite of Nelson's and served under him on several occasions - including the Battle of Tenerifé (where Nelson lost an arm and Fremantle was also severely wounded in the arm!) as well as Trafalgar. Admiral Sir… Mehr dazu
