This is a wonderful, romantic fantasy story. The rich, descriptive language tells a story of the idealism and introspection of a 14-year-old girl in a way no actual 14-year-old girl could express but could certainly feel. Mystical, fantastic, this is not supposed to be a realistic portrayal of a South Carolina town in the 60s and I think those who criticize the book on that basis are missing the entire point of the book. It's been years since I've been as taken with a story as I've been with this one. Lovely book. Two other recent, entertaining purchases I would also recommend are Haddon's "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time" and Perez's "The Losers Club."
