To maximize the quality / visual impact of a photograph, solid composition is essential. The figure I uploaded, "composition triangle", illustrates my understanding to major aspects of a solid photo composition after reading Michael Freeman's book "The Photographer's Eye: Composition and Design for Better Digital Photos". Three vertexes are tool, skill, and intent. To maximize the area of the composition triangle, all three vertexes need to be well positioned.

I don't know how many people are like me: I've got a reasonable DSLR that provides enough technical controls and delivers good image quality; I've learnt about stuff like aperture priority/shutter priority and different kinds of metering modes and have done exercises as a hobbyist. At some point, I felt the quality of my photos stagnate, they look like every other image on cheap postcards. After reading this book, I realized that lacking of good sense for natural lighting and lacking of knowledge of how to control artificial lighting was the problem.

It's a small book with warmth of daily life, humour, and sophistication. It however does not require the concentration that is usually needed for reading a book on a subject that is as heavy as this. Compositions in the pictures are concise and powerful. I admire Liu Yang very much.
My favourites:
- Tiere (Animals): In Germany the birds sit on a tree. In China the birds are fried on a tree-like skewer. Oh man, this one really makes me homesick. The fried quails are so tasty!
