Harry Potter und die Zombie-Waschmaschine, 15. Januar 2012

Feed liest sich wie eine Fleißarbeit aus einem Volkshochschulkurs im "Kreativen Schreiben". Und es bringt einen zum Weinen beim Gedanken an all die fantastischen SF- und Fantasy-Autoren, die vom Schreiben nicht leben können, weil Kinderbuchverlage wie Ehapa-Lyx deren Bücher links liegen lassen und lieber versuchen, mit Totalausfällen wie Feed schnell Kohle zu machen.

Zusammenfassend:

1. Feed ist /kein/ Zombie-Roman.
2. Feed ist ein Thriller - aber ohne "Thrill".
3. Feed ist doch ein Zombie-Roman - soweit es seine Hauptfiguren angeht.
4. Feed ist Harry Potter mit ein wenig Splatter und Zombies - aber ohne Sex.

Starting with the bad news, Feed reads like a concoction right out of the creative writers' workshop, or like somebody's first novel. To sum it up:

1. It's not really a zombie novel.
2. It's a thriller without thrill.
3. It /is/ a zombie novel - as far as the main characters are concerned.
4. It's Harry Potter plus gore and zombies, but still without sex.
5. It's a romantic adventure novel for girls.
6. Tedious trilogy trap, beware! Read "World War Z" by Max Brooks instead.

That much said, now for the details:

Award-winning?? What a totally marred novel!, 5. Juli 2011

This book won the 2001 Philip K. Dick award (under the title "Ship of Fools"), and that tells me two things. First, 2001 must have been a monstrously poor year for Science Fiction. And even given that, (second:) the standards of this award have become perilously low. I'll come back to that in the end of my review. I'm still furious that I wasted time and money on this book, and I want to convey this in my review, too.

It's hard to make my point clear while not giving one or the other hint on how the story plot is developping. It's not that the publishers would mind, they didn't ask the Wikipedia guys to remove their plot synopsis - but I don't want to spoil the reading "fun" for… Mehr dazu
