5.0 von 5 Sternen Another fantastic album from Renee Fleming, 15. September 2009
Rezension bezieht sich auf: Verismo (Audio CD)
This album was launched as part of Renee Fleming's South African tour with the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra in August 2009. Fleming has compiled familiar selections and some rarities in this new album. Some listeners might find that her voice not matching singers more familiar in the style of verismo, but on repeated listening, there is much to enjoy. The rare selections from Leoncavallo's La Boheme and Zandonai's Conchita are a particular highlight, alongside excerpts from Puccini's La Boheme, La Rondine and Turandot, where Fleming's heartfelt singing is most welcome. A disc which shows off Fleming's artistry yet again.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Cura as Otello in the Liceu production, 5. Mai 2007
Rezension bezieht sich auf: Verdi, Giuseppe - Otello [2 DVDs] (DVD)
Another Willy Decker show..........again, I am not phased by the minimalistic production, especially after watching the short documentary that form part of the bonus features. Like the 2005 Salzburg Traviata, this Liceu Otello will have its die-hard fans and its critics. As far as I am concerned, the 3 principals are in top form, with Cura providing one of his strongest interpretations in recent years. Vocally, he has a few dry spots, however, his acting and intense portrayl make this a production to treasure. A triumph all round! However, I think that this opera could have been fitted onto a single disc, as the bonus features are not that substantial.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Another magic night with the stars in Berlin, 5. Mai 2007
The dream couple of opera along with Placido Domingo provide many highlights in this well filmed concert from Berlin to celebrate the closing of the Soccer World Cup. I do agree with many of the reviewers that Domingo's diction is exemplary, compared with the new kids on the block. However, I must confess slight disappointment that none of the reviewers make mention that Domingo transposes most of his solo arias than what is originally written, which I am sure is to be expected, given the fact that he was 65 at the time of the recording.

However, Anna and Rolando's performances are incredible. Each aria or duet is sung with such passion and fervour. Highlights are definitely Rolando's 'La Danza' which gets the audience clapping and up on their feet and Anna's 'Quando m'en vo', where she also surprises the audience. Watch the DVD and see what I mean. Reservations aside, this is a classy concert, excellently filmed and the enormous audience of over 12 000 people enjoy every minute. Conductor Marco Armiliato and the Orchestra of the Deutsche Oper provide warm and sympathetic accompaniment to the star singers.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Gruberova scores an artistic triumph as Norma, 10. April 2007
Rezension bezieht sich auf: Bellini, Vincenzo - Norma [2 DVDs] (DVD)
Gruberova waited long before tackling Norma on stage, and this DVD confirms that the wait has been worth it. Having released a concert performance on CD which was recorded in 2005, her first staged performances were recorded by UNITEL in January/February 2006 at the Bayerische Staatsoper. I must admit that looking at Gruberova, one sees an older woman, which is obvious, given that she was almost 60 at the time of this recording. However, age has not seemed to have taken its toll too heavily on her vocal resources. It was probably the need to rise to the occasion that made this recording all the more special. Munich assembled an outstanding supporting cast and Haider, ever the loving and sympathetic conductor, allowed his wife to shine. His interpretation of Bellini's score is, in my opinion flawless and even better than the CD recording. The audience love Gruberova and the performance is one to listen to over and over again. This will probably be the ideal performance for many, however, Jurgen Rose's sets, costumes and direction will disappoint those who prefer a more traditionlist approach to the opera, with a minimal set and the chorus flasing guns at certain moments. Musically, there are no cuts and Gruberova sings Casta Diva in G, as well as both verses of of her ensuing cabaletta. Mira o Norma, with a wonderul Ganassi as Adalgisa, is sung in the high key, with both voices blending beautifully. Todorovich bawls his way a bit through the ungrateful role of Pollione and Scandiuzzi is sonorous as Oroveso. There is even an 11 minute feature on the making of the production, as well as short interviews with the stars. With superb DTS sound and picture in high definition colour, this is one DVD I have and will return to many times over!

5.0 von 5 Sternen A modern take on Lohengrin, 15. Februar 2007
Rezension bezieht sich auf: Wagner, Richard - Lohengrin (3 DVDs) (DVD)
This production is a modernised production of Wagner's fairytale opera. It may not have as many supporters as it should due to the decision to stage it in modern dress with minimal sets. However, the singing is exemplary, with all the principals in top form. Special mention must be made of Vogt's Lohengrin, Kringelborn's Elsa and Meier's superb Ortrud, finally realised on DVD. Nagano also shapes the music with utmost care for the singers and the sound is superb!
