Vonnegut has pulled off another classic with this one, alongside Cats Cradle, a great book, and others I have yet to read. The author uses Kilgore Trout who he uses also in Timequake, but in "Breakfast" Trout seems to fit in the story more and the story is more planned and assembled for this earlier work. But the Trout in this one and Timequake are both in different universes of the author's invention because trout die in 1981 in this book but he is alive for the timequake in the 90's.
I like the idea that all characters, major and minor, have equal impact on the story. The cast of characters makes the story simultaneously funny and sad.
As for the content: I am totally against censorship and politically corectedness, but being a member of the generation that follows 'X', my brainwashed mind could not help but cringe at some of the phrases used. Never mind that, though. Everything, the language, the drawings, everything in the book worked artfully.

This is one of the most creative books I've read and it was always dark and interesting.

5.0 von 5 Sternen the rotting grapes, 9. Juni 2000
'Grapes of wrath' are the rotting grapes which represent the waste and selfishness of those with wealth. One really sees what Roosevelt meant when he said to fear fear. Justice is served in this book by the attitudes the characters maintain.

Catch-22
Catch-22
von Joseph Heller

4.0 von 5 Sternen Horse chestnuts and crab apples, 11. Mai 2000
Rezension bezieht sich auf: Catch-22 (Taschenbuch)
This book I thought was at it's best in the beginning. It continued well bought could not keep up the humor using the same kind of jokes that Heller kept using. Maybe it was just too long. Catch 22 was an original and well written and sometimes hilarious novel. It's message is that nothing should be taken seriously, or is it that everything should be taken seriously? Who stole my plum tomato?

4.0 von 5 Sternen Howard W. Cambell Jr.'s story, 17. März 2000
Rezension bezieht sich auf: Mother Night: A Novel (Taschenbuch)
This is the second book I've read by Vonnegut(after the exceptional Cat's Cradle) and Vonnegut proves his superior ability to create complicated characters. After finishing the book, I still have no Idea if Cambell was a real person or not. (I don't think so, but the author made him feel like a real person.) My only complaint is that the plot was never clearly defined and it constantly shifted in time. But other than slight lack of focus(which works in a way since it is the last written words of a probably soon to be convicted war criminal possibly about to be hanged, making the story all the more realistic.) Overall this was a great book with all issues such as morality and responsibility. In fact, I loved the idea that a man working as a spy could serve the side he is spying on far more than he could ever serve the ones he is spying for... all unintentionally. Vonnegut loads the story with humorous ironies also.

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
von Douglas Adams
  Taschenbuch
Preis: EUR 6,60

4.0 von 5 Sternen Satire for the twentieth century, 17. März 2000
This is a classic and hilarious book. My only complaints are that it is hard to get into in the beginning. Also, the end isn't that satisfying. I don't know why he didn't try to wrap up the ending a little more rather than making a sequal blindingly obvious. I can't wait to read the next as soon as I get some free time.

4.0 von 5 Sternen I want your ..... pootie!, 8. März 2000
Rezension bezieht sich auf: Big Trouble (Gebundene Ausgabe)
I agree the plot wasn't as funny as it could be but the characters were hilarious and the way he writed is funny too. I love the way he can give written word a tone as sarcastic as if they were said by Bart Simpson. Some of the jokes about Jerry Springer and Monica Lewinsky may prove to make the book dated in the future but all of the other jokes that were obvious or could easily be missed (a character curses and Barry says something like "they took a moment to think about this idea" with the 'idea' being the swear word.) Though it doesn't work perfectly Barry fans will love this book and see that he can write a story that is somewhat serious and funny.

Ubik (Vintage)
Ubik (Vintage)
von Philip K. Dick
  Taschenbuch

4.0 von 5 Sternen to be used as directed, 6. März 2000
Rezension bezieht sich auf: Ubik (Vintage) (Taschenbuch)
I hope this isn't Dick's best novels because while I thought it was really good, it was imperfect. More others should write science fition that is unconventional and even for the particular genre, wholly strange. Most sci fi is too interested in developing the details of the tchnology in use (this sci-fi can be great too) than developing whatever it is that Dick does develop. The characters in this book could use some work though, and the book is not entirely focused. In fact, I wish he would have stuck with the question of how a person from the future could live in the past and it's current ideas knowing the major events to occur. Also, WHY DIDN'T JOE USE THE UBIK SPRAY TO UNREGRESS THE UBIK BALM? Oh well, just a minor detail.

It wasn't too bad for a book I had to read for school but it lacked the reality of All Quiet on the Western Front and Henry didn't seem to accomplish anything through the story.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Funniest End of the World since Dr. Strangelove, 26. Februar 2000

or did this book come first? Well, this was funny like DS(or HIL to SC & LTB) and proves it by the end. If Bokononism is actually a religion I'd sign up. I wasn't sure how I'd rate the book until the last paragraph and it was so great I knew the book would be remembered as a great in my mind. The short chapter format is sort of impersonal but not detrimental. It's look on humans is original and witty.
