After reading this book, you will never clip your toenails again without marvelling at the fine and delicate engineering that went into the noble toenail clipper. You will develop a nostalgia for flipping through the card catalog, and for the days when consumer items did not come in fashion colors and an overwhelming number of forms. We are unaccustomed to the results of such honed and loving attention paid to the quotidian. Who knew such pleasure could be gotten from the history of film projectors, or the semantic evolution of the word "lumber?"

4.0 von 5 Sternen Almost as much fun as an actual 9 year old!, 15. Juli 2000
Rezension bezieht sich auf: The Everlasting Story of Nory (Taschenbuch)
Nicholson Baker's literary abilities are praised all over the place - I'd like to praise his obvious parenting abilities. This book shows that he both remembers his own childhood and is paying intense, loving attention to his children. We get a great book - his kids get a great dad.
This book is insightful, brilliant, etc - it's also USEFUL if you have school age children in your life. When they can't talk yet, we know they're not rational; but it's so easy to forget that children look like they have a lot more figured out than they sometimes do. Hang out in the inside of Nory's mind for awhile, and remember how confusing and scary and wonderful and BIG the world was when you were small.
The book also presents a textbook example of parents allowing a child's good sense to guide her in a moral dilemma. Again, of course the literary value of the book is more important, but how fabulous to read a book with such a flawlessly moral tone as well.

3.0 von 5 Sternen Maybe it's just me....., 15. Juli 2000
Maybe I just prefer the Middle Ages to the California Gold Rush. Maybe's it's just that all the descriptions of dust, bad food, and outdoor toileting facilities reminded me of my miserable summer camp in the Sierras. I enjoyed her previous two books so very much, that I couldn't believe how hard it was to get through this one. In her medieval books, the story is compelling and the historical details feel necessary; I felt this book's plot was merely an excuse for lots of miner slang and unpleasant personal hygeine details. Those things are interesting in themselves, but are available in history books and primary sources, even for children. This felt more like a history lesson and less like a novel than any of her previous work.

Rolie Polie Olie

1.0 von 5 Sternen Disappointed!, 30. April 2000
Rezension bezieht sich auf: Rolie Polie Olie (Gebundene Ausgabe)
Rolie Polie Olie is boring. Stories have never been Joyce's strong point, and in this book he does not give us the lush, gorgeous art that in his other books makes up for the weakness of the narrative. The computer generated art is lifeless. This book also lacks one of my favorite parts of Joyce books - the well-dressed, respectably sexy housewife. Instead of the bombshell mothers he paints in his other books, he gives us a sexless, frumpy robot lady.
