Don't waste your time, 12. September 1999
A creaky plot. An insipid heroine. Supporting characters straight out of the stereotype zone. There's nothing noir about this book except its cover. Jane Candiotti is more concerned about getting the ex-husband of the deceased in bed than finding the killer, and then she whines about how weary she is from everyone depending on her too much (when in fact it's her brother Timmy who's carrying the lion's share of responsibility for caring for ill Dad, and her male partner who's really working the murder investigation). Philips needs to spend more time around real-life detectives and less time fantasizing about a woman so needy and pliable. She's about as gritty and intriguing as a Harlequin romance.
