A beautiful book for the time around Christmas. The characters are very convincing, you can wholly sympathize with the heroine and her situation. A nice book to cuddle up in front of a fire and read in one go. Since there are a lot of descriptions about preparing food - since the heroine is a chef - it makes it easier to read if you at least like cooking.

Meine Tochter ist ein großer Koalafan und liebt das T-Shirt. Es hält die Form und wäscht nicht schnell aus. Würde ich wieder kaufen.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Great characters - great dialogues, 9. Dezember 2014

The black sheep is one of my favourites. It is full of witty dialogues not only between the hero and his heroine but also between the Calverleighs. Of course we know from the beginning that Abby and Miles are going to fall for each other but as in many of Heyer's novels it is the way of getting there which makes her books so nice to read.
There are many other characters and their stories woven into the main plot which makes this novel a great one to read.

3.0 von 5 Sternen Very predictable, 9. Dezember 2014

Personally, I didn't think the story very unusual or surprising. Apart from Fiona's mishaps not much is happening. We know from the beginning that Tyrell and Fiona like each other and their misunderstandings are far from convincing. Marcus seems to bring some mystery into the story but his actions are cut short and remain in the background. At least Aunt Honore is funny, which makes the story a little more lively.

2.0 von 5 Sternen Lots of copied passages from original or film, 9. Dezember 2014
Verifizierter Kauf(Was ist das?)
I like to read variations, but about one third of this book is either a copy from the original or from the movie. So it is possible to skip whole pages without missing out on the story. It's not a pleasure to read whole passages you already know. And it doesn't make a lot of difference if it is Mary or Charlotte who marries Mr. Collins or if Jane accompanies Lizzie on her visit. There are some new passages but so far (and I'm about half through with it) not enough to justify a new novel. For me it was a waste of money.

3.0 von 5 Sternen Highly unrealistic, 20. November 2014

What I don't like very much is that the story woven around the pair of lovers is always very short in Anne Barbour's books. After having read the first pages one always knows how they will end. There are no unforeseen turns. Also her characters are very much alike and even the passages were love scenes are described are nearly the same throughout her books. Moreover there's always an extremely beautiful heroine, a dashing hero and neither of them believes in real love. Strangely, even though they are kissing all the time they think that they hate each other until the end approaches and they hardly think about anything else all day than each other.
Less openly practised love, less thoughts laid open and a little more reality would make this and others of her books a lot better. She should give her other characters a chance to develop and fill their days with life and the books would be a lot nicer.

3.0 von 5 Sternen Good to read, 20. November 2014

This is one of the better stories of Anne Barbour. Personally I'd prefer more content and less love. Every thought of the main characters is laid open and is centered mostly on them falling in love. The minor focus is on the story itself.
But in contrast to some of her other books there is a story woven around the love story which is even a little mysterious. So all in all it's good to read. Still I think the book would gain a lot of quality by not putting in every thought and feeling. It leaves no room for the imagination and makes it less interesting.

5.0 von 5 Sternen One of my favourites, 15. Juni 2014

Even though the beginning is rather sudden and it takes the reader a while to understand the situation the brother and sister are in it is a story which has everything - some mystery, a lot of different characters and puzzling family connections, unforseen turns and two very different love stories which develop one very fast and the other one nicely over a great lapse of time and even some hints at the historic happenings at that time. In Prudence we meet a wonderful heroine disguised as a man trying to fit into the male world whereas her brother rather likes to take risks and also likes to play with people in his disguise as a woman. This of course leads to various complications as each of them falls out of their assumed roles at times.

Prudence managing fine most of the time, meets her equal in Sir Anthony Fanshawe. Having suspected something irregular in her behaviour her disguise can't hold up against his thorough watch and she has to decide whether he is to be trusted or not.

Heyer again presents us with wonderful characters who fight for their ideals inspite of what's put in their paths.

3.0 von 5 Sternen better than the first, 15. Juni 2014
Verifizierter Kauf(Was ist das?)
In the second part of the trilogy Harrison's style of writing is better than in the first. Still characters jump onto the scene out of nowhere, Lord Halkyn has rather suddenly become a dear friend of Lady Dunham but there is a lot more to the story. For me there are still too many of the characters' thoughts laid open but it's not as often done as in the first book and since there are two stories interwoven it's quite good to read. But it's not a book I would keep to read a second time.

Harrison wants her heroines to be witty but they're really not and will never be if she doesn't give the reader time to get to know them. So far they are only beautiful and usually can't decide between being shy or fast forward. Everything which would add to their character is only told by them at some time but is never really part of the book which makes it far less interesting. She could have started her story at the boarding school where Charlotte is at the brink of escaping and we would have a better idea of her life and time to sympathize with her character instead of letting her start off with a strange kissing scene which wasn't really convincing since Lord Halkyn could have hidden her without exchanging passionate kisses. People don't become extraordinary just by saying they are. You have to make them act accordingly.

5.0 von 5 Sternen A smuggling story, 11. Juni 2014

This is another of Heyer's stories which is a little "darker" than the others. Starting off a little strange it develops into a mysterious story. Like in "Cousin Kate" the love story develops rather fast but there is always the unsolved riddle of the toll-gate keeper and his son and other strange characters lurking around. This book is hard to put down.
