The Little Old Lady Who Broke All the Rules (English Edition)
The Little Old Lady Who Broke All the Rules (English Edition)

1.0 von 5 Sternen I do not understand the hype, 16. August 2014
Verifizierter Kauf(Was ist das?)
The idea sounded good and promised plenty of humour, but the story just stayed flat and dull and never grabbed me.
The english is very simple (I can not say if this is because of the translation or not), the sentences generally short and straight forward.
For me there was not enough humour, hardly any suspense and I found too much, too unrealistic (my impression: in some respects the old age pensioners were thinking/reasoning like teenagers might do; also every one else not in the main group of "oldies" - guards, police, nurses - just seemed too stupid).
Managed to get half the way through the book, then gave up it as a waste of my holiday reading time.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Enjoyable steampunk romp, 22. März 2014
Verifizierter Kauf(Was ist das?)
I enjoyed this steampunk adventure and I'll definitely be looking at getting some more in the series.
I like the main characters a lot and the story was interesting and original enough, though it is really the interplay between the two agent partners which powers everything.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Grabbed me and did not let go, 1. März 2014
Verifizierter Kauf(Was ist das?)
Rezension bezieht sich auf: Reamde (English Edition) (Kindle Edition)
This Stephenson book really grabbed me and did not let me go till the end. I do however agree with others who have said that it could do with being shorter. Towards the end the story starts to lag a bit, because it just keeps going on where it might have been better to find a quicker conclusion to it all. However all in all, a recommended read to Stephenson fans. For readers unfamiliar with Stephenson I would recommend a shorter book as a Stephenson-starter, for example "Snow Crash" or "Cobweb" or "Zodiak".

5.0 von 5 Sternen Typical Branderson, 1. März 2014

Great fun for any fan of Branderson: interestingly original magic system, good characters, good story. I can highly recommend this, it is just a pity it is not longer.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Suprisingly good, 1. März 2014
Verifizierter Kauf(Was ist das?)
I can heartily recommend this whole "Emperor's Edge" series of books. The books are driven by the characters, the dialogue and the interaction between the characters. This is what makes the series. Do not expect intricate and original world-building - as the author herself says, this is not what interests her. The story is also not particularly strong. But the characters make the books great fun anyway and help overlook things there the story lags a bit. I devoured the whole series in a couple of weeks.

2.0 von 5 Sternen Disappointing, 1. März 2014
Verifizierter Kauf(Was ist das?)
Ok, so "The Stress of her Regard" was never one oyf my favourite Powers books anyway, but I made the effort of re-reading it first before starting this loose sequel, "Hide me Among the Graves". It is probably the Powers book i have least enjoyed reading and I was very disappointed. Although a sequel to "Stress" the mythology seems quite inconsistent. I also found the story distinctly repetetive and not particularly engaging.

1.0 von 5 Sternen Just not funny, 1. März 2014

Any comparison to Pratchet or Monty Python are just misleading. I gave this several chances but eventually gave up. Funny names and funny accents do not necessarily make a book funny.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Wimmelbuch in English, 10. Dezember 2009
Verifizierter Kauf(Was ist das?)
We have two of these German Wimmelbücher by Rotraut Susanne Berner and they remain favourites, constantly chosen by the kids to be looked at together. The pictures have lots details to find so that on each visit it is possible to find new things and old friends. Highly recommended book for small children (pre-school and primary).

2.0 von 5 Sternen Not really steampunk and too many ideas, 7. November 2009
Verifizierter Kauf(Was ist das?)
Rezension bezieht sich auf: The Court of the Air (Taschenbuch)
Oh dear.
Well I read this immediately after Neal Stephenson's "Anathem", so I guess anything was going to be a bit of a let down. I almost did not bother finishing the last 20 pages of this book though.
Stephen Hunt had lots and lots of interesting ideas (some very good) and crammed way too many into this story. Perhaps he should have saved some for future books and instead fleshed out the ideas he did use a bit better. Some of his ideas I also found rather unpleasant. The world he described never really gelled together.
The main characters, which started off promisingly, reverted to being rather shallow half way through and I more or less lost interest.
The cover describes this a Steampunk, but it is not by my definition (it is set not in our world at all).

5.0 von 5 Sternen good standard reference book, 11. September 2009
Verifizierter Kauf(Was ist das?)
I bought the English original edition of this book to complement the German edition I bought in a bookshop here in Germany. Both editions are exactly the same in layout, down even to the page number on which a particular bird appears. Good clear drawings and photos of birds and concise descriptions. The book is not too large (can be taken on holiday without any problem).
