5.0 von 5 Sternen High-class mystery writing: superb, 15. Mai 2000
...and again I did not foresee in any way the ending of an Agatha Christie story. This story is really interesting, and is one of the few mystery stories that deserves a thorough rereading. I was astounded when the name of the killer was revealed (of course, Poirot once more does the goods). Very highly recommended, both for fans of the genre and for those who are new to this type of story.

4.0 von 5 Sternen An excellent introduction to Perl on Windows systems, 3. Mai 2000
Rezension bezieht sich auf: Learning Perl on Win32 Systems (Taschenbuch)
If you do not use a Unix system, and are interested in Perl, this is the book you should go for. It provides an entertaining and thorough stroll through the language. There are a lot of little differences between this book and the other 'Learning Perl'. If you want to make special use of the Windows GUI, you should check this book out. Combined with the reference work 'Programming Perl', you will have everything you need to become proficient at the language. Highly recommended for both amateur and professional programmers.

4.0 von 5 Sternen An engaging work and small masterpiece, 25. April 2000
Rezension bezieht sich auf: Dubliners (Vintage Classics) (Taschenbuch)
This collection of short stories shows Joyce's writing style at its best. All stories are interesting for their own sake, and they provide a varied overview of Irish society shortly after the turn of the century. The book is enjoyable at many levels, from the stories themselves to their inner meaning. You can come back to one or more stories again and again, and still they will not become boring, and I think that that's the hallmark of any great work. Highly recommended as an appetizer to the other work of James Joyce.

The Reality Dysfunction: Emergence - Part I
The Reality Dysfunction: Emergence - Part I
von Peter F. Hamilton

4.0 von 5 Sternen Sombre, macabre, but exciting high-tech space opera, 25. April 2000
This book is the start of a long trilogy. It is serious, violent, and epic space opera. The scope is reminiscent of Iain M. Banks, but Banks is a lot more concise in his descriptions. The prose style of Hamilton may sometimes prove a bit overwhelming, but all in all there is still a very good story underneath all the verbosity. Most reviewers have commented on the erotic overtones in the book, indeed some readers may find themselves offended by the perversiveness of some scenes. For those who are willing to invest some time in a really epic story, one which oozes realism at all levels, this book is well worth reading.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Excellent edition of the complete works, with a few quirks, 9. März 2000
In contrast to some of the other editions of the complete works of Shakespeare, this book really is value for money. All plays (and poems, etcetera) are printed in a lavishly, pleasing way, very easy to the eye (one of the biggest drawbacks of some editions is that they use a very small font to keep the number of pages to a minimum). As others have commented, not much can and should be commented on the works themselves, they have stood the test of time, and the (normal) spelling that is used in this edition makes each reading an enjoyable experience. All the plays are given a brief (and somewhat succinct) introduction, which is, at best, okay. The strange things, in this book, are, for example, the order of the plays, the way King Lear is printed in two versions (that differ only in small details), and the inclusion of fragments that are attributed to Shakespeare (a bit controversial to say the least). Still, if you want to buy a good, thorough, and well-researched edition of the complete works of Shakespeare, you will not go far wrong with this book.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Good introduction to Perl, and great reference, 9. März 2000
From its corny title you might expect another one of those sleazy introductions to Perl (I can name a few), but I can happily say that this book is an exception. The overview of the language is excellent and very comprehensible. Even after reading Learning Perl and Programming Perl, I picked up some valuable tips. The chapters on Object Oriented Programming and Perl/Tk are also good. For the Perl/CGI part, you might consider reading additional material, however. All in all, a surprisingly good introduction and reference to Perl 5, both for the beginner and the more advanced programmer.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Big, authorative, and extremely well laid-out collection, 7. März 2000
This book used to be one of the largest around, until others came along. Still, the collection of quotations is one of the best of all, especially when you take an interest in English poets and writers. The book is well laid-out, and now contains short descriptions of the authors of quotations. The book's index is also very good, not quite as extrardinary as Bartlett's, but you will be able to find almost any quotation from it. Highly recommended for both the just-interested browser and the serious quotation-seeker.

Bartlett's Familiar Quotations
Bartlett's Familiar Quotations
von Justin Kaplan
  Gebundene Ausgabe
Preis: EUR 46,33

5.0 von 5 Sternen Superb Dictionairy of Quotations, equally superb index, 3. März 2000
This is a 'thinking man's' book, it is very well laid out, includes many (sometimes very obscure) quotations, is extremely well on sources (something that is so blatantly absent from many dictionairies of quotations), and includes a large amount of cross-references (although you can find a lot more yourself by careful browsing). If you buy only one book of quotations, this should be your choice. A good second is Oxford's, but Bartlett has got the best index of any reference work ever (it is more than 700 pages itself!) The preface of the book contains a sour message on the state of illiteracy in the USA, it is best left alone, but the rest of the book cannot be recommended enough. In sum, this is the best reference book of quotations available.

5.0 von 5 Sternen An amazing overview of all tough programming questions, 1. März 2000
Rezension bezieht sich auf: Perl Cookbook (Taschenbuch)
This is a must-have for the aspiring Perl programmer. I already owned Learning Perl and Programming Perl, and this book provided a very welcome addition to them. The 'recipes' are exquisitely explained, and the book answers many (and I do mean many) of the questions you may ever have (for example, how to get a random line from a file without loading the file first). Like the other O'reilly books, this work is written in a humorous way, and laid out simple and effective. If you're planning to do _anything_ in Perl, this book will be a great time-saver.

Insanely Great: The Life and Times of Macintosh, the Computer that Changed Everything
von Steven Levy

5.0 von 5 Sternen Excellent, even moving account of Apple, 1. März 2000
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. The history of Apple, from its lowly origins to the well-known company it is today, is described in great detail. Most interesting is the development of the Macintosh, particularly the role played by Steve Jobs. If you are at all interested in recent history, you will admire the way in which Levy describes corporate business of the 80's. Recommended.
