4.0 von 5 Sternen Concise Guide for the Beginner, 13. Januar 2000
I have been a teaching assistant for desktop publishing classes at the University of Maryland University College since February 1998 and I have worked with desktop publishing since 1992. In addition, I have just been hired to teach a design concepts class at The George Washington University.
Coming from that background, I read this book for a class I took at the University of Maryland College Park called "Editing and Document Design." I found the book a very good guide to design, very concise, and very effective with explaining principles of design.
My one big complaint about the book is that Williams is often too blunt with her advice. Otherwise, it would have gotten a full five stars.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Very strong book for the prospective writer, 10. Januar 2000
I found Zinsser's book at a used book sale and I immediately snatched it up as an interested writer. Whatever I paid for it was not anywhere near its worth in my opinion.
Zinsser's writing style is very fluid, easy to understand, and comes across as one writer to another. He describes the common pitfalls writers go through and provides simple, effective ways to overcome those mistakes.
Whenever I start working as a full-time journalist, this book will go on my desk right along with the AP Stylebook and other bibles of journalism.
Once in a rare while, I come across writing that is so well done that I just sit and read to enjoy the mastery. This is one of those cases.

3.0 von 5 Sternen Not Bad But Still Disappointing, 5. Januar 2000
As someone who has edited newspapers at the college level, I thought I was getting something that would give me a great reference point for a future in journalism. Plotnik's book assumes that the reader has experience with journalism but is new to editing. It is not intended to be a primer showing the would-be editor how to edit; rather, it is designed to be a guide into avoiding pratfalls that can befall a novice (or even a veteran) editor.
While I am fairly pleased with the extent of his advice that can be translated from the time he wrote the edition I am reading - 1982 - into modern times, I am dismayed that the technology he refers to is so outdated. The modern editor does not have to spend 10 minutes staring at a proof page to look at how to set type any longer thanks to technology desktop publishers have at their fingertips.
Plotnik would have been much better served if he had someone well-versed in modern publishing technology update his technical knowledge base.
