The Labors of Hercules (Hercule Poirot, Band 26)
The Labors of Hercules (Hercule Poirot, Band 26)
von Agatha Christie

4.0 von 5 Sternen A fun read., 30. Mai 2000
As a novice to the mystery genre, I very much liked this book. Although there is an attempt to form a continuing thread throughout the chapters of this book, it is really just 12 little mysteries with their own characters (with Poirot being the only real common character), plots, and suspense.
As a result, avid mystery readers might be put off by the lack of detail and story in each storylet. However, each one is rather compelling in its own right (although some are certainly better than others). Thus, the reader doesn't have to put much of an investment in any of them; soon after the situation is presented, the resolution appears.
I'd recommend this book to those who haven't read many mysteries and are curious to see what they're about.

5.0 von 5 Sternen A retrospective from a Unix user and casual programmer, 29. Mai 2000
I've been a Unix user for seven+ years, and have some programming experience, although I am by no means really knowledgable about either. When I entered my most recent job, I needed to learn Perl fast, and so I used this book to help me get started.
From a self-teaching perspective, I found this book to be exactly what I needed. I'll admit that the first chapter (a general description of the Perl language) was not very helpful, but I found the division of the rest of the book by small pieces of the syntax (scalars, arrays, hashes, regular functions, i/o, etc.) to suit my needs, which tended to be along the lines of: I need to do x right now. I learned the easy stuff really quickly, and I still use the book as a constant reference.
Now, it is just a beginner's text, so it is not an ideal complete reference, and you won't learn anything particularly nifty. However, if you need to both learn how to program and actually do some programming at the same time (i.e. not in a class-room setting), Learning Perl can be a wonderful text.

Bridge My Way
Bridge My Way
von Zia Mahmood

5.0 von 5 Sternen A great mini-memoir which happens to be about bridge., 28. Mai 2000
Rezension bezieht sich auf: Bridge My Way (Taschenbuch)
This is one of my favorite books about bridge, partly because it is not really about bridge at all. Bridge My Way is really about Zia Mahmood's love affair with bridge. A colorful character, Zia is completely full of himself, and he wouldn't be so charming if he wasn't.
The book contains plenty of bridge tips and descriptions of hands, but don't expect to learn much about the normal bidding and playing of bridge. Instead, we learn more about bridge gamesmanship: how to win with trickery, how to win unorthodoxly, and most importantly, how to win with style.
The other half consists of various stories, many with only the most tangential relation to bridge. They give us a glimpse into some of the real personalities in the bridge world, and make for good reading.
If you like bridge columns, especially those focused more on the human element than the mechanics of play, you'll love this book.

If on a winter's night a traveler
If on a winter's night a traveler
von Italo Calvino
Preis: EUR 14,26

5.0 von 5 Sternen A wonderful modern novel, 11. Dezember 1999
Calvino's novel is an excellent experimental piece of prose. Calvino plays with the author-reader relationship in a way that is quite intriguing, and manages to build suspence and interest with a fractured plot structure.
A warning to potential readers: This body of this novel consists of many "first chapters" that are not resolved. Although quite good, they may not be satisfying to those who prefer a more traditional structure with some resolution of plot. Still, if you are inclined to be a bit adventurous with your reading, I highly recommend If on a Winter's Night a Traveler.
