Whatever our faith or belief in something, this book dispels and strengthens the convictions we held before. It is a book meant for the open-minded who appreciate varying views of what man holds as the most mysterious of all things (God). The views of different peoples, cultures and religions should be taken into consideration in whatever judgements we make on this. This is so because I had this fascinating insight into this subject from a story with the title The Verdict of Hades, found in the book "The Usurper and Other Stories. The God Delusion is a book to read.

Rezension bezieht sich auf: Alone (Gebundene Ausgabe)
Alone by Lisa Gardner is an amazing crime story. It al began with the death of Jimmy Gagnon, son of Judge Gagnon. Jimmy was killed by State trooper Bobby Dodge who with a tactical swat team was trying to defuse a supposedly domestic abuse hostage crisis. But the judge and his wife believe Jimmy's wife, Catharine Gagnon engineered the crisis to get rid of their son, so they want their only grandson taken from her. They start by suing Bobby Dodge and with that unfolded incidences which invokes Catherine's past as a victim of a pedophile half a century back.
Embroiled in the mystery of the unfolding drama is the lurking presence of the serial rapist, manipulation by the late Jimmy's parents, the helplessness of the grandson, Catherine's calculating nature and Bobby Dodge's determination to resolve the mysteries behind all the deaths around. Just like DISCIPLES OF FORTUNE, you are thrilled until the last pages of the book.

A case for Democracy is an amazing book by Natan Sharansky. You will love it. It gives you an idea of how the world operates, of the way dictatorial societies think not only about themselves, but also about the free world. And then, one gets a point of view of how to deal with terror and dictatorships in order to have peace and security.
I also recommend THE USURPER AND OTHER STORIES , THE UNION MOUJIK, LONG WALK TO FREEDOM

This a very touching book about Nkosi, a young South African boy who had the HIV/AIDS virus. With inspiring and tremendous courage, the young Nkosi lived his short life making an effort to live like any other healthy child and caught the attention of the world by becoming a young messenger of hope for the millions afflicted by the virus. With the support of her determined foster mother, the young Nkosi accomplished what may be described as his mission to galvanize the world for the drive to find a cure to HIV/AIDS.

In Snakepit, the author provides to the reader a superb story on the last days of Idi Amin rule as the head of state of Uganda. His oppressive, repressive and despotic regime is vividly exposed and the futility of evil and absolute power over fellow humans is written in detail. Through Bat Katanga, a graduate of Cambridge, returns home to Uganda to a lucrative job at the Ministry of Power and Communication privileges of a "Guy from Abroad" But the naive Bat soon finds himself caught in the backstabbing world of Idi Amin, where he has to keep an eye on everyone and trust no one in a tyrannical atmosphere of death and fear.

5.0 von 5 Sternen An outstanding story, 28. Februar 2005
Uncle Tom's Cabin is a very melodramatic book. I have read it several times over the past twenty years and must say that it has something new for every decade or even for every generation. When considered for our time, Uncle Tom's stands out as a classic prose that hits directly at those turbulent times before the Civil War, and reflects issues of war and principles today. Harriet Beecher Stowe had a great cause to write about and wrote a work that still is as relevant today as it was during his time.
The author's masterful story summarizes the conflicting attitudes of a nation on the brink of civil war. Melodramatic though it is, it was written in the style of the times and for a situation that required it. This is a highly recommended book.

"The Grapes of Wrath" a true American Classic is one of the most outstanding books that I have ever read. It does not fail to leaves its mark on a reader. This serious master-piece has its setting during the "Great Depression" and gives a general view of the 1930's. John Steinbeck who may be the greatest chronicler of this cataclysm wrote this THE GRAPES OF WRATH which is about the struggles of the poor during this time. In the story, the Joad family endures many struggles on their way to find work in California and their lives are a microcosm of struggles of the poor during this time. Like thousands of other families, they encounter hunger, violence, betrayals, setbacks and despair. Yet the Joads maintained dignity, courage, and hope to recover. America was fortunate in that the poor did maintain these virtues which kept their hopes alive and made them not to rebel and throw the nation into anarchy. The nation was also lucky with the ascension to power of Roosevelt. THE GRAPES OF WRATH shows how a people with hope and a leadership committed to its people can overcome disaster to become strong again.

It is not often for someone to come across great reads that actually changes the person's life. Reading Dostoyevsky's "The Idiot" and John Steinbeck's "East of Eden" had a profound influence on me. There was so much to learn from those stories since they were so complete in treating humanity. In fact, these are deep, insightful and inspirational books that one can not easily throw aside after one has finished. These major classics are books to ponder about, books for us to think and reflect over and over. If you haven't read this great piece of American literature, then I suggest that you do so.
I also recommend: Anna Karenina and Disciples of Fortune-these are two other classic works.

Small Place is a very simple-written book. With a fascinating setting in Antigua is the story of the extraordinary conditions of the life of the people of Antigua. Jamaica Kincaid's writing portrays not only her bitterness with the legacies of slavery but also her disappointment with the new Antigua, especially the loss of social values and the corruption plaguing the political life and those higher up in society. And she brought it out so succinctly and poignantly that this book clearly articulates the crisis plaguing developing nations, especially Africa that though independent, still have not yet shaken off the negative legacies of colonialism. This is a highly recommendable read.
