Though far from the definitive writer's guideline, this book shines a unique perspective on the craft. Stephen King lays down the law and then teaches it. He shares his techniques, his pet peeves, and his own personal horrific experiences - both as child and adult - and he does it all within the cerebral classroom of the printed page. He wraps a juicy filling of personal tragedy, growth and experience within a tight covering of his famous story telling style.
As a human, I was touched by his childhood anecdotes and often laughed with him about his insecurities. I am still in awe at what he has recently had to overcome physically. I mean, damn.
As a writer, I am grateful for a brief glimpse into his vocational world. I gained confidence from learning about things I have been doing right and have changed many bad habits (may the adverb rest in peace). I've read several tomes on the subject and believe his reigns as the most complete.
I've been a fan of King's since the seventh grade when I was given The Dead Zone and Cujo as an Easter present. A year later I had read every book he'd published (with the exception of the dreaded Limited Editions of which I could opine negatively for hours - suffice it to say that writing should be for everyone to read, not just the rich). I've read or listened to all his books since. I can honestly say, that this is my favorite.
Sometimes the coldest hands to wrap around your neck are the true ones.
The only bad thing I can say about this book is that it's too short, something one rarely has the opportunity to state regarding the beloved author.
A huge thank you to Mr. King for a brief indulgence into the life of a genius.

This, as far as I'm concerned, is the first frightening bit of horror Mr. King has released in quite some time. And it rocks. The first story petered out like ZZ Top song with no substative ending, but beyond that, this collection thumps. I don't scare easily, but the story 1408 had me doing sanity checks for the next two days. I don't know if I'll ever stay in an old hotel again. The exposition leading to the horror is unparalleled. The horror itself NEVER lets you go. The falling action, as it turns out, is just a little more horror, toned down to allow our pulses to normalize. The last story is just a bit of flavor and a good yarn like the first, but unlike the first, it feels more complete. But, my God, the second tale, 1408, must be heard to be believed. Listen to it in the dark, alone, at night, preferably in an old hotel room.

I have been a fan of Stephen King since I turned twelve, 18 years ago. His writing is both masterful and intriguing. He possesses an innate ability to delve into the human soul, no matter how dark, and expose it to the light of the printed page. However, with a few exceptions, most of his recent work has been dull at best, derivative at worst. Since Gerald's Game, I have begun to wonder what he's thinking. I still buy his books - loyalty and hope run wide through me - but I am often disappointed. Though rays of distinction do exist (Desperation, Wizard and Glass, Insomnia) Hearts In Atlantis is not one of them. I awarded both stars for the first story in this collection of five. The second story, though interesting, went nowhere. I read the last three because I'm a completist and hate to leave a book unread. King is writing better than ever. No one can spin a yarn so masterfully or entice readers into a plot with as much craft he, but, perhaps due to his early string of precedents for high standards, his novels have slowly become less engaging. Several since and including Gerald's Game should have been short stories. I've always felt that a novel should not just be longer than a short story but should also achieve a higher level of complexity. More than that, though, it should be interesting. During the third story in Hearts In Atlantis, I began to wonder if I should get checked out for ADD. Stephen King's gift for writing seems to be growing disproportionately with his gift for creating unique plot twists. I hope that changes. He is, after all, still the King.

Hannibal

1.0 von 5 Sternen Bold in attempt but shallow in delivery., 9. August 1999
Rezension bezieht sich auf: Hannibal (Gebundene Ausgabe)
While the plot of Hannibal proved both searing and intriguing, the writing was script-like in nature and, thus devoid of feeling. Climactic scenes and tense moments were left empty without the exploration of the human mind and heart. Though much of the writing was masterful, there was no depth or probing into the characters. Quite a disappointment. Buy this one only if you're mind thirsts for the answers to the questions left from SOTL. I can think of no other reason to spend the money.
