Getting to Yes: How To Negotiate Agreement Without Giving In
Getting to Yes: How To Negotiate Agreement Without Giving In
von Roger Fisher
  Audio CD
Preis: EUR 22,99

5.0 von 5 Sternen The classic primer on principled negotiation, 12. Dezember 2010
Fisher hits major points of negotiating using the "BATNA" methods. He explains that from childhood, most of us are natural negotiators and have been conditioned to believe that getting "what we want" can sometimes be a lose-win result for the one who has compromised or lost. I appreciate the tactics and often overlooked mechanisms that focuses on "giving" more to both sides in negotiations than taking, for I truly believe that win-win negotiations are the best especially when clarity and reasoning is mutual

Principle Centered Leadership
Principle Centered Leadership

Preis: EUR 11,60

3.0 von 5 Sternen This book is a follow-up to Covey's Seven Habits., 7. Juni 2010
Rezension bezieht sich auf: Principle Centered Leadership (Taschenbuch)
Principle Centered Leadership was a little slow. I read Principle Centered Leadership before I read The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. Both books are written by Steven Covey; however the 7 habits book is better written and thought out. Many of the examples used in both books were the same which became redundant. Steven Covey has a great moral compass and is right on the money in saying principles must be the foundation of leadership.Covey is heavily vested in psychobabble, but he is on the right side of the fence: leadership is essentially about character, not expediency.

How to Stop Worrying and Start Living
How to Stop Worrying and Start Living
von Dale Carnegie
  Taschenbuch
Preis: EUR 5,50

2.0 von 5 Sternen Carnegie didn't really write much in this book., 12. Februar 2010
Read for the course I'm creating, this book has about seven or eight gems of advice. Unfortunately (or perhaps fortunately, for those who like such stuff) Carnegie lards the book up with anecdotes. Anecdotes may illustrate how the principle helped a single person, but even three or four (or ten or twenty) do not prove that a principle is valid.
Carnegie didn't really write much in this book.... instead he just published stories of people and how they stopped worrying. Quick read, considering you only need to read the beginning of each chapter and the main points at the end to grasp what you need to stop worrying.

4.0 von 5 Sternen An excellent primer for deciphering the oft-misunderstood concept of body language., 12. Februar 2010
In short, Mr.Navarro's book is very simplistic and offers advice and knowledge using a piecemeal methodology rather than a holistic one. Many important aspects of body language like context were not detailed in the book, however, the unique and straight forward presentation of information and experience negated the negative effects of the lack of explanation of several aspects vital to studying and understanding body language. It was filled with abundant of real life observations and examples that helps one truly embrace the knowledge described in the book it is the most effective approach of hands-on education in nonfiction informational books. To sum up, the book regardless of the level of understanding one has in studying body language, is beneficial, constructive and helps one understand the value of the art of studying body language in realistic terms.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Trust is central to relationships, 13. Januar 2010
If I had to pick one book that Covey wrote, it would be this one. Trust is central to relationships, and this book outlines in an accessible and to the point way the ways in which we gain and reduced trust in our relationships. If we assume that leadership is relationships (as do Kouzes & Posner in "The Leadership Challenge" and "Credibility"), then leaders must learn how to build and restore and keep trust in their relationships. A must read for anyone in leadership roles at home or at work.
I especially liked his chapters on building trust by talking straight, clarifying expectations, and confronting reality as all of these require courage and are difficult for me. However, in high trust relationships, people know each other's expectations and acknowledge the reality of their discourse because they have made the effort to communicate to each other. Case in point, I admire my wife for keeping communication open with even difficult people by being willing to continue interacting with them. As he says, when you close yourself off to the relationship and stop doing things with someone, then the relationship deteriorates even further. So I'm reminded to focus on the opportunity (rather than framing it as an adversity) to rebuild trust where trust has been breached. In fact, this encouraged me to realize that breached trust can actually lead to a restored and stronger bond than was before. So take heart in your effort to build trust, and read this book!

5.0 von 5 Sternen Must read!!, 14. Dezember 2009
Rezension bezieht sich auf: First Things First (Taschenbuch)
This is an absolute MUST read for anyone doing anything. It's much more than just a time management book. It is a life management centered on principles. If you're looking for help organizing your life around the things that matter most, this is the book for you. Very helpful with weekly planning around the roles you live in and focused on relationships above everything. I only wish I read it years ago.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Definitely a recommended read., 8. Dezember 2009
A good list of 100 ideas to learn how to relax and stop stressing over all the minor stuff that gets to us day in and day out and keeps our back and necks tight and makes it difficult to find the life of peace and happiness that we claim to be seeking. He makes the claim in every "chapter" that we are ultimately in control of how we deal with everything and that we have the choice to go with the flow or let the idiot who cut us off in traffic stress us out for the next 20+ min. There are no earth shattering techniques in here, they are all ones that we've heard time and time again in different ways but it's all put together in one book with personal examples of how it has worked for him. Now that I've gone through it once, I plan on rereading it next year focusing on two techniques a week. I know there are certain areas where I go with the flow nicely but there are definitely areas where I tend to let myself get stressed out when it's totally unnecessary and I want to work on that.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Susan Collins's distopian future is easily the best young adult storytelling since Harry Potter finished., 30. Juni 2009
Rezension bezieht sich auf: The Hunger Games (Gebundene Ausgabe)
That rare book that you can't tear through fast enough even as you dread it being finished, Susan Collins's distopian future is easily the best young adult storytelling since Harry Potter finished. What the two share is a unique ability to celebrate the best of humanity without neglecting the worst. Set in a North America transformed by global warming and ravaged by nuclear war, the remaining populations are concentrated atop the Rockies in the West and the Appalachian range in the East. The East, emerging much worse for the wear, was divided into thirteen districts and forced to pay tribute to the Capitol in the West. Collins introduces us to the world through the eyes of Katniss Everdeen, an undersized and undernourished sixteen-year-old protagonist and narrator that embodies Jean Craighead George's practical and self-sufficient ideal. The early chapters feel ripped from 'My Side of the Mountain', if the Catskills had been occupied by a brutal foreign power. Before her father died, he taught her the basics of hunting. Her mother, a skilled apothecary before she sank into a debilitating depression, educated Katniss on the plants all around them. These skills, combined with ample ingenuity, allow her to keep her mother and little sister fed.
The one thing she cannot control is the Hunger Games. Over seven decades prior, the Eastern districts mounted a failed rebellion that was brutally crushed by the Capitol in the West. The thirteenth district was completely obliterated and the Hunger Games -- an annual gladiatorial fight to the death broadcast live as reality TV -- were imposed on the surviving twelve districts as punishment. Every year, a boy and girl between the ages of 12 and 18 from each district are drafted through a lottery to compete. When Katniss's little sister is drafted, Katniss volunteers to take her place.
What transpires from there is full of human feeling and astute observation of the human condition. Though Collins restricts herself to a middle school vocabulary for her target audience, the result feels authentic given Katniss's age and background. Her portrayal of death is matter-of-fact, unflinching, and heartbreakingly personal. Her portrayal of life in the face of death is achingly beautiful. Few will ever find ourselves as literally and figuratively boxed in as these children, and yet in the face of such severely limited options they showcase the full spectrum of human expression. The Hunger Games are designed to force the most vulnerable to carry out inhuman acts in order to survive. The most rebellious thing Katniss can do, then, is to express love and fellowship and gratitude in spite of what she must do.
The result is a vision of the future on the opposite pole from Huxley's 'A Brave New World', a book that grapples with the unanswerable questions of our uncompromising world in a manner that all ages can process. Upon finishing this book, I felt that little pang of grief that only the best stories can stir. The good news for me is that two follow-ups are planned.

4.0 von 5 Sternen the mysterious forces and intelligence of the collective conciousness on earth, 30. Juni 2009
Rezension bezieht sich auf: The Wisdom of Crowds (Taschenbuch)
This book discusses society's issues with cognition, coordination and cooperation leading to the conclusion that these very factors differentiate societies from groups of people that just live together. Surowiecki also makes a strong case that independent, unbiased, well-thought out decisions by a group of individuals will more often than not produce a better answer than the best answer from a single individual. However, people are constantly watching one another and creating opinions based on others' actions, which can lead to dependency as shown throughout history with market bubbles. Although, I was skeptical at first that this was another organizational behavior book with the same message delivered in a different format, my mind was quickly changed and I was more than satisfied by the thoughts and lessons offered by the author.
