Bridging the Gap: Theory and Practice in Foreign Policy
Bridging the Gap: Theory and Practice in Foreign Policy
von Alexander L. George
  Taschenbuch
Preis: EUR 12,60

3.0 von 5 Sternen If you have a serious interest in theory and practice of foreign policy, you should read this, 16. August 2014
Verifizierter Kauf(Was ist das?)
Good but not great. Lines out an interesting research program for improving the knowledge base makers of foreign policy depend on. Argumentation sometimes lacks logical rigour whereas the writing style could be less convoluted. But all in all a narrowly convincing effort to explain how the gap between theory and practice in foreign policy could be and why it should be bridged. Recommended to practitioners and theorists of foreign policy. Certainly accessible to the general reader who might be put off by the dry and academic style and the specialized subject matter.

The Intellectual Temptation: Dangerous Ideas in Politics
The Intellectual Temptation: Dangerous Ideas in Politics
von Frits Bolkestein
  Gebundene Ausgabe
Preis: EUR 22,30

4.0 von 5 Sternen a book well worth reading which could have been (even) better, 19. Juli 2014
Verifizierter Kauf(Was ist das?)
In this readable and interesting book, the highly educated high-level veteran of Dutch and European politics, Frits Bolkestein, charts the evolution of what he calls "dangerous ideas in politics": ideas of a general nature based not on experience but on intellectuals' preconceptions of what the world should be like which influenced policy.

As far as I am able to judge the matter, Bolkestein is a very competent guide to the history of those ideas but he could have developed his alternative to politics based on "dangerous ideas" in greater depth.

I recommend this book to anyone who would like to read a sophisticated and well-informed critique of the ideas behind today's culture of political correctness.

The Strategist: The Life and Times of Thomas Schelling
The Strategist: The Life and Times of Thomas Schelling
von Robert Didge
  Gebundene Ausgabe

4.0 von 5 Sternen biography of an intellectual hero, 19. Mai 2014
Verifizierter Kauf(Was ist das?)
The only biography about Thomas C. Schelling available. Although it lacks critical distance, Schelling's life and work are presented in a compelling and informative way. Schelling's crucial influence on cold war policy is deftly explained. The book also gives an overview of Schelling's achievements outside nuclear strategy.

To me it was an enjoyable and quite fascinating read. I finished the book with a deeply felt sense of awe of Schelling's creativity and shrewdness.

If A, Then B: How the World Discovered Logic
If A, Then B: How the World Discovered Logic
von Michael Shenefelt
  Taschenbuch
Preis: EUR 23,62

4.0 von 5 Sternen A readable philosophy book with intellectual substance, 17. November 2013
Verifizierter Kauf(Was ist das?)
This book is a history of logic which focuses on how factors like geography, politics, economics and technology influenced the developement of logic. It can be understood without any prior knowledge of logic or philosophy.
"If A then B" has been the second philosophy book I have read for pleasure in my life. The first was "History of Western Philosophy" by Bertrand Russell. Russell's classic is in its style clearly superior but in my opinion "If A then B" has greater intellectual depth and originality. I highly recommend this book to any reader interested in the history of logical ideas.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Presidential foreign policy leadership, 18. August 2013
Verifizierter Kauf(Was ist das?)
In this book, Nye assesses how ethical and effective the foreign policy leadership of the eight presidents was whose terms saw progress towards the creation of American primacy. The authors draws extensively and to good effect on his expertise on power and leadership. Although his style sometimes lacks elegance, it is quite easy to follow. Nye doesn't only analyse the past but also presents a rough sketch how the conditions of American foreign policy might develop in the coming decades and what tasks and challenges American presidents will have to deal with in the near and medium-term future.
The book should appeal to readers with an interest in 20th-Century American history or foreign policy leadership in particular.

Jane Austen, Game Theorist
Jane Austen, Game Theorist
von Michael Suk-Young Chwe
  Gebundene Ausgabe
Preis: EUR 27,89

4.0 von 5 Sternen Jane Austen the Game Theorist, 28. Juli 2013
Verifizierter Kauf(Was ist das?)
In this book, the author tries to prove that one of Jane Austen's principal aims in writing and publishing her novels was to provide an education in strategic thinking to young unmarried women. This claim may sound eccentric but Chwe presents an abundance of evidence (culled from the novels) to support his claim. His evidence even suggests that Jane Austen discovered several fundemental insights of 20th-century game theory in the early 19th century. Thus calling Jane Austen a game theorist seems justified.
Chwe's book is a readable, non-technical primer on basic game theory and a valuable addition to the literature on Austen's novels.

Wheel of Fortune: The Battle for Oil and Power in Russia
von Thane Gustafson
  Gebundene Ausgabe
Preis: EUR 32,95

4.0 von 5 Sternen The Russian oil industry and the Russian state, 7. Juli 2013
Verifizierter Kauf(Was ist das?)
A comprehensive history of the Russian oil industry from the breakdown of the Soviet Union to Putin's reelection in 2012 with a strong emphasis on the political and historical context. Intellectually sophisticated, information-packed but also well-organized and readable. The author really knows his stuff as he has been working for decades as an energy consultant in Russia and is one of the leading academic experts on energy issues. If you want to know how the Russian oil industry and its interaction with the Russian state has developed over the last 20 years and where it might be headed in the nearer future, read this book.

The End of War
The End of War
von John Horgan
  Gebundene Ausgabe
Preis: EUR 16,40

5.0 von 5 Sternen Should be read by everyone, 5. Mai 2013
Verifizierter Kauf(Was ist das?)
Rezension bezieht sich auf: The End of War (Gebundene Ausgabe)
Although Horgan's opposition to war as a means of resolution of social or political conflict is grounded in morality, his conviction that war can be abolished if simply enough or the right people choose to do so, is based on a thorough examination of scientific evidence, as he points out in this short but important book. He brilliantly pulls off the balancing act of presenting scientific and scholarly research results both accessibly and accurately and unfolds his argumentation systematically and logically.
People who are against war will find in this book powerful arguments to defend their point of view against the charge of naivety. Although the book focuses on how war could be abolished, it contains the most persuasive demonstrations of the inherent wrongness and evilness of war I've ever read. It should be read by everyone who cares about the future of humankind.

Anticipating Surprise: Analysis for Strategic Warning
Anticipating Surprise: Analysis for Strategic Warning
von Cynthia M. Grabo
  Taschenbuch
Preis: EUR 29,95

4.0 von 5 Sternen analysis for strategic warning - an insider's view, 17. April 2013
In this very clearly written and smartly argued book, Cynthia M. Grabo, a seasoned veteran of the art and science of intelligence analysis for the purpose of strategic warning, gives a thorough description of the most important facets of her craft. I found most of it interesting and some of it fascinating. Definitely worth reading!

Destroying the Village: Eisenhower and Thermonuclear War (Columbia American History)
Destroying the Village: Eisenhower and Thermonuclear War (Columbia American History)
von Campbell Craig
  Taschenbuch
Preis: EUR 25,18

4.0 von 5 Sternen The genius of President Eisenhower, 15. März 2013
The book describes how President Eisenhower manipulated the conditions of American foreign and defense policy decision making in order to avoid thermonuclear war. It portrays Eisenhower as a master of political strategy and manipulation who developed a plan for saving mankind from thermonuclear holocaust, kept this plan to himself and implemented it single-handedly.

In my opinion, the author's assessment of Eisenhower's role is a very convincing interpretation of historical evidence. I think the book is really historiography of a very high order. I recommend it to anyone who is interested in a behind-the-scenes look at the definition and execution of American Cold War policy in the first 15 years of the conflict which were arguably its most dangerous phase.
