Caribbean
Caribbean
von James A. Michener
  Taschenbuch
Preis: EUR 6,50

4.0 von 5 Sternen Good book, awful first chapters, 2. September 1998
Rezension bezieht sich auf: Caribbean (Taschenbuch)
I'm about 3/4ths of this book, and I highly recommend anyone to read it. But read my lips: skip the first chapters of Arawaks and Mayas. Michener, as a good 'american' thinks that those incredible people use to think as him... his descriptions of the character's thoughts are pitifully... american!
Besides some minor incoherences (in one page it's said that Drake always call this sea "The North Sea", and in the next one Drakes speaks about "the Caribbean"... I've been awake until 3 in the morning, reading. Few books had done this with me.
BTW, I'll try some other books of Michener, maybe even 'Mexico'. (I'm from there)...

The Evolution of Useful Things: How Everyday Artifacts-From Forks and Pins to Paper Clips and Zippers-Came to be as They are.: How Everyday Artefacts ... Zippers - Came to Be as They Are (Vintage)

4.0 von 5 Sternen Great book in the weak design theory bibliography, 29. Juli 1998
Ok, although it's true this book has very few illustrations, I strongly recommend it to industrial designers. Even if Petroski can't forget his engineer point of view, he has written good material here. After reading Donald Norman, you should give this book a try. (Ok, and after Giedion, Munari, Alexander, etc)... but do read it!

Interface Culture: How the Digital Medium--from Windows to the Web--Changes the way We Write, Speak
von Stephen Johnson
  Gebundene Ausgabe

3.0 von 5 Sternen Some few good thoughts but limited, 22. Juli 1998
This is one of the best technoculture books I've read, but don't expect great things, I guess there's still missing THE book in this area. Johnson shows here his literature knowledge but for a complete analysis of society and technology you need a lot more. If you have 20 dollars and a free afternoon, read it.

Emotional Intelligence: Why It Can Matter More Than IQ
Emotional Intelligence: Why It Can Matter More Than IQ
von Daniel Goleman
  Taschenbuch

3.0 von 5 Sternen Good info, very bad written, 16. Juli 1998
Mr. Goleman shows with this book two things: that E.I. really matters, and that he doesn't know how to write. I've almost finished the book, and had counted 26 times the phrase "as Dr. ... told me," buagh! This book is full of knowledge (very few from Mr. Goleman, if any at all), and deserves a read even againts its author.
