Rezension bezieht sich auf: The Simple Truth (Gebundene Ausgabe)
Let me make a general remark first. Contemporary American writers lack the subtlety of writing a good piece of prose with a strong control over the storyline. They can be labelled as good story-tellers but not good novelists. (No, I'm not British and yes, Stephen King is an exception). Now, this was my first Baldacci and he holds true to my above remark. Very poor character configuration, no scene-settings at all, and above all, a very predictable ending. As for the storyline, well, it was all too bald. My first impression about Baldacci? Another storyteller in wake of so many getting advantage of a huge readership which is not introduced to intricacies of a novel yet.

I just can't believe that John Grisham is a major player in current fiction scene and is considered to be in the same league with Tom Clancy and Stephen King (though I don't like horror stories at all but at least SK knows how to form a sentence). I have read all JG's books and the only ones I enjoyed were "The Chamber " and "The Rainmaker". His worst book ever, to me, was "The Partner" and the "Street Lawyer" could be a hot contender for that position had it not been for the subject which I found thought provoking (that's why 2 stars). It seems that JG has run out of ideas (which were never abundant to him in the first place) but his books are at least serving one purpose i.e. we have one less lawyer to worry about.
Sorry Mr. Grisham, but from now-onwards, you are on my "borrow only" authors list.

My third attempt to finish the novel has failed. I like Stephen King a lot for his character building, his scene-settings, his descriptions of characters' emotions and. above all, his prose writing. But what I have never managed to like is a horror story. Okay, a lot of people out there like horror fanatsies, that's why he is the best selling author of the modern times, but to me, SK will always be identified with The Green Mile and Shawshank Redemption. I would love to read more stories like them from Stephen King.

I really enjoyed reading this novel, in fact my first from Agatha Christie. It was really good to read but I was somewhat disappointed at the end. It was not up to the theme of the novel.

I'm a committed reader. Once I start reading a book, I finish it. I don't drop it in the middle. No matter how boring a book is, there is sometime a single page or paragraph or sentence which can justify the reading of that book. That holds true for most of the books but, sorry, not this one. I read this book from cover to cover and wondered for a long time how a writer of Calncy's reputation can produce such a book. It triggered an old and recurring thought in my mind; it's everybody's right to make as much money as he or she wishes but should he or she compromise the quality to make that money?

I wonder why Mr. Ludlum can't call it a day instead of printing books like this one or "Cry Of Halidon" or "Apoclaypse Watch". He's not the same writer who gave us Bourne series and Rhinemann Exchange. I've been a great fan of Ludlum, but I can't just finish this book.

Rezension bezieht sich auf: Just Java 1.2 (Java Series) (Taschenbuch)
If you want to learn Java in a hurry, go for this book. But if you have some time at your hands, forget it. I say this because of the following 1- It's a small book on a big language which means brief explanations and very few examples.
2- Even with this size, the author has wasted quite a lot of book space to show his sense of humor (which I didn't find very humorous, sorry Peter).
3- The book is not very well organized.
4- The author claims that you don't need to know C++ to learn Java from this book. I find this claim a bit ambitious. Specially when author himself refers to different aspects of C++ to clarify certain concepts.
In short, if you want to read some jokes, learn how to make a paper airplane which can carry payload (I'm not kidding), know authors views about how software are and should be named, read some inside information on Sun Systems, enjoy digs at Microsoft and learn Java, buy the book now. But if you just want to learn Java in an organized and professional manner, read Wrox Press' book "Beginning Java 2" by Ivor Horton. You won't be disappointed.

This is my second book on Java and now I realize that it should have been the first. The author does a great job of introducing all the aspects of OOP and implementaing OOP in Java. Beginners should pay special attention to Chapter 6 ('Extending Classes and Inheritance'). Don't skim thru it 'cause if you do, you might not be able to understand rest of the book. Another great thing about the book is the support which Wrox is extending. There is a Q&A seminar link on the Wrox site of this book on which you can post questions regarding the book. I have posted a few questions myself and the author, Ivor Horton, responded within 24 hours. Ivor and Wrox, thanks to you both for such a splendid job.

Another excellent piece of work by Carl Sagan. This book is a must read for everyone.
Dr. Sagan has done a marvelous job examining how pseudo-science works and what are it's effects. At times he seems irritated due to the fact that scientists of the past have not worked towards popularizing science and I think he is totally justified for that. Today, a lot of problems which scientists and scientific organizations face are due to the indifferent and elitist behavior of scientists of the past.
On the whole as good a book as any other by Carl Sagan.

4.0 von 5 Sternen A Good Introduction To Islam, 22. Juni 2000
Rezension bezieht sich auf: Islam: The Straight Path (Gebundene Ausgabe)
One of the best books to describe Islam to a person not familiar with the faith. If you want to know Islam, this book is it. But don't expect to get answer to all the questions. Consider this book as a starting point.
Most of the people who want to understand Islam and who are not Muslim, do it by comparing it to their current faith. To me it's not possible since every faith is unique, has it's own plus- and minus-points. So to understand Islam and any other faith requires studying it with an open, unbiased (as mush as possible) and neutral mind. This book can help you understand Islam if you read it in the manner described above.
To me, the strongest part of the book, is chapter 6 called "Islam and Change".
