5.0 von 5 Sternen Ouch: right in the heart, 28. Juli 2015

This is such a mean, cruel book. You think it's a heart-warming story of a celestial super-powered star being reborn as a puppy to teach him patience, kindness and friendship, and instead it's much more along the lines of "the price for your heart's desire is your heart", with no easy ending for either of the main characters.

Also, it mixes three very random conceits (talking animals, science-fiction and Irish mythology) and somehow still manages to come up with a coherent story, so that is pretty impressive.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Magical, dream-like, epic, 28. Juli 2015
Verifizierter Kauf(Was ist das?)
It is entirely possible to read the Chrestomanci books out of publishing order and start with this one - it is chronologically the first and in my opinion the very best in a great series. But it also rewards readers who started with Charmed Life, because there's more than one great little moment where you suddenly see something from Charmed Life in an entirely new light or think "oh! so this is how---". In many ways Charmed Life is both an echo, a foreshadowing and a continuation of this book.

If you are not yet a fan of this series or this author and aren't sure it's for you, however, I do recommend this as your entry drug.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Fantastic yet true, 28. Juli 2015
Verifizierter Kauf(Was ist das?)
The only reason this isn't my favorite Chrestomanci book is that The Lives of Christopher Chant also exists. WW combines three genres of children's/YA fiction in an absolutely thrilling mix: the school story, fantasy and dystopian fiction. It is dark, but the darkest part is perhaps not that this is a world were witches, even children, are actually burned at the stake, but the way the child protagonists in this story suffer in very normal, everyday ways - they are neglected by their families, they grow up in a tense and unloving environment with no one they can trust, they bully each other and even at their very young age they are already becoming little neurotics. It's very much a story about outsiders, the one kid in class with no friends, at the very bottom of the pecking order (except there are at least four of them here), but it's also a book about the rest of the class - the popular clique-leaders, the hangers-on, the star pupils and queen bees, the whole poisonous structure around bullying.

2.0 von 5 Sternen I can't believe I gave two stars to a DWJ book, 28. Juli 2015
Verifizierter Kauf(Was ist das?)
Rezension bezieht sich auf: Enchanted Glass (Kindle Edition)
DWJ is the author of some of my favourite children's books, but Enchanted Glass isn't one of them. A small caveat: I quit this book about three-quarters through, so there might be a brilliant twist at the end that redeems it, but I doubt it. The only reason I got this far was because I was on holiday without internet and this was the last unread book on my Kindle. What's the problem? There's more than one: slow pacing, a setting that probably aims for "magical and idyllic" and ends up just being cloying, bland characters, an uninspired premise and villains who neither scare nor interest me. It's like another installment in the Chrestomanci series (a world were magic exists, a child protagonist in trouble), but the Chrestomanci books tended to have more conflict between the characters and more interesting "alternative history" settings. Plus, they were darker and more excitingly paced.

Another problem I see with this book is that one of the two main characters is an adult (a middle-aged professor nonetheless), but somehow this character doesn't really come across as a grown-up, nor does it change the tone of the book and gear it towards older audience, but on the other hand I suspect this character is even duller for child reader than he would be for adult audiences.

In conclusion: read this if you're looking for something slow, languid and harmless, or are a DWJ completist, leave it if you want to be WOWed.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Positively surprised!, 6. März 2015
Verifizierter Kauf(Was ist das?)
I left the wizards books for last, and read everything else that is Discworld first, because I read and heard that they were the least serious and most parody-like of the series, and maybe also the least sophisticated. But the Light Fantastic was already a decent book (sort of on par with Equal Rites) and this one is the same quality and depth I have come to expect from the Watch, Witches or YA books! In some ways it seems to me to be a companion of sorts to Night Watch, because both are about revolution, and in both of them Pratchett has a very complex take on it - the Red Army and the Republic of Treacle Mine Road are both justified, idealistic and doomed, and both bear the potential for going horribly wrong, and both Vimes and Rincewind become unwilling and involuntary figure heads. Without giving away the ending of Interesting Times, I think it is the more light-hearted of the two. I enjoyed the setting, too - it's actually kind of sad that we never really hear from the Agatean Empire again after Interesting Times!

5.0 von 5 Sternen Fun, clever, touching, 19. Januar 2015
Verifizierter Kauf(Was ist das?)
I devoured the first and second part of this series. The second part surprised me, but in a good way, because after the ending of the first I expected a book in which One Esk and co. run around Radch space recruiting followers and figuring out more about the political conflict and such (which would also have been fun) and instead we get a book with a narrow focus and lots of additional world-building. Esk really shines in this one as she proves smart, unbending and deft at politics (her way of dealing with the politically charged situation she's thrown into reminds me of several other awesome fictional characters like Tyrion Lannister, Danaerys Targaryen - for some reason I had to think of the politics-heavy parts of GoT while reading this - or Miles Vorkosigan) while at the same time still lonely, tragic and neither human nor machine, and the book builds a great supporting cast for her.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Top notch, 3. Januar 2015
Verifizierter Kauf(Was ist das?)
I read this book almost in one go and am about to order the next - it's that addictive and good. It reminds me of both the Vorkosigan Saga and Iain M. Banks's Culture series - similar style, similar sensibilities (in terms of ethics and gender politics, especially) - but also of some of the better YA dystopias like "The Hunger Games". Why? The setting is definitely dystopian, and an all powerful state is the main enemy, and the hero is a single person opposed to this regime. Not a teenager but a corpse soldier with the mind of spaceship, but still, Breq, the protagonist, is still in the process of becoming a person, so I think there is a definite coming of age vibe to it.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Clever, romantic, fascinating, 3. August 2014
Verifizierter Kauf(Was ist das?)
This novel is equal parts crime fiction, romance novel, school story and campus novel and the mix is enticing. All the more so (for me) because almost all of the characters are women. Not only that - most of them are complex female academics. I can honestly say I've never read a novel with this gender distribution or this sort of cast, and for that alone it deserves 5 stars, but it is also wonderfully written.
