The Ritz London Book of Afternoon Tea: The Art and Pleasures of Taking Tea
The Ritz London Book of Afternoon Tea: The Art and Pleasures of Taking Tea
von Helen Simpson
  Gebundene Ausgabe
Preis: EUR 8,40

3.0 von 5 Sternen No pictures!, 2. November 2010
It's a sweet little book (and I mean little!) packed with lots of recipes but there are NO photos! There are only a couple of illustrations throughout the book. And the font is rather small.

The chapters are:
- Tea at the Ritz
- History of Tea Drinking
- Sandwiches and Savoury Dishes
- Winter Teas
- English Cakes
- Foreign Cakes and Wicked Cakes
- High Tea
- Summer Teas (how to make jam)
- A Directory of Teas

All of the recipes give metric/imperial and cup measures, which is probably useful.

I especially like the section on sandwiches - and these seem rather simple to make. Basics like the cucumber sandwiches, special egg sandwiches, devilled ham toasts, tomato sandwiches and smoked salmon sandwiches are included. Also interesting are the sandwich ideas for children: banana sandwiches, sardine sandwiches and peanut butter and jelly (!) sandwiches.

It's my first book on afternoon tea so I'm happy to have the information / recipes but I'm not quite satisfied so I will be ordering a 'proper' book soon!

3.0 von 5 Sternen Too small!, 1. November 2010
Rezension bezieht sich auf: Chanel parfum (Gebundene Ausgabe)
I have started collecting coffee table books and I got this because I love Chanel -- but it is too small! It's about half the size of A4 and also rather thin. If only they had beefed it up somehow... then it would be so good because the pictures in there are beautiful and include many of the Chanel perfume ads (vintage to modern ones including Claudia Schiffer and Kate Moss). It's such a shame.

For a "proper" coffee table book on Chanel, get Chanel: Collections and Creations by Daniele Bott. It doesn't contain the perfume ads that are in this little book, though.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Great coffee table book, 1. November 2010
I'm a lover of all things Chanel so of course I had to get this book. It's the perfect coffee table book - which is what I got mine for - because it's big, a hardback and has plenty of photos. There is surprisingly a lot of text, too, and the entire book is peppered with quotes. The chapters are:
1. Introduction
2. The suit
3. The camelia
4. Jewelry
5. Fragrance & beauty
6. The black dress

The only disappointment - hence only four stars - is that I would like to have seen all the Chanel ads over the years eg for perfume because I love looking at those. But there aren't any in this book :-( The Chanel parfum book by Francoise Aveline does contain these but the book itself is too small to be a good coffee table book.

5.0 von 5 Sternen This works! My back/shoulder pains are almost gone., 17. Juni 2010
I have had awful back and shoulder pains for years so I didn't hesitate to try this out. After all, it promises better blood circulation, stress relief, better sleep and more energy. Sounds fab? Yes. Does it work? Yes, I think so.

The idea of lying down on 8820 spikes (size M), even if they do sort of look like pretty flowers, makes you question your sanity. When you touch the spikes with your fingers, of course it really hurts - but remember that fingers are more sensitive to touch than other parts of the body. You might need to start off wearing a t-shirt because it takes a while to get used to but once you do, I promise you'll be taking off your top quite willingly. You only get the full effect when you use it on bare skin.

You can lie down on it, which is what I do most of the time for my back/shoulders/neck. But you can also sit on it (if you're sitting at a desk a lot) or stand on it. I often roll it up and rest my legs on it. I admit I can't use it as a pillow yet, I just don't find that very comfortable...

I use it every day for 10-20 minutes and have become quite dependent on it. It's bulky BUT if you're travelling, you can remove the foam mat and only take the cloth cover with the spikes on it. That won't take up much space.

I have the mat in size M. I remember seeing it in L and it didn't seem that much bigger. I think M is fine for most people; buy L for men or if you are bigger than average.

2.0 von 5 Sternen So disappointing, 11. Mai 2010
Rezension bezieht sich auf: About Face (Gebundene Ausgabe)
Another disappointing make-up book... J-Lo looks fabulous on the cover but the rest of the book is so blah. I don't recommend it.

The way this make-up artist works is so complicated, it's definitely not every day style - I mean, are you going to always bother contouring your face with a darker foundation first? There are some stunning photos and transformations in the book but I'm sure they've all been touched up digitally as well. Some of the outrageous transformation processes include yellow paint-like foundation or concealer to highlight and brick-coloured foundation to contour etc. Too much! Maybe for photos but in real life I'm sure you'd look ridiculous.

Get Jemma Kidd Make-up instead!

5.0 von 5 Sternen Fantastic!, 28. April 2010
Rezension bezieht sich auf: The Gruffalo [DVD] [2009] [UK Import] (DVD)
I wasn't sure if the Gruffalo DVD would still be interesting for my son because he had moved on to other stories by the time he had turned four (the book was a top favourite when he had just turned three). I ordered it anyway (because I wanted to see it!).

Well what can I say, it is a mega hit. My four-year old boy absolutely loves it and will ask to see it three times in a row!

The graphics are superb. The characters look exactly like Axel Scheffler's drawings for the book. The rhyming text is all there, word for word. The only things they have added are an introduction / ending to have a narrator (a squirrel mother) and some added action/suspense - the mouse drifting down the river on a log for the encounter with the owl scene; the mouse actually being taken to the owl's treetop house; the fox, owl and snake all meeting and discussing the Gruffalo...

I mean, they had to beef up the story somehow - and they have managed to stretch it into a 25-minute film without losing any of the original book's charm.

There's only this story on the DVD so it's really short and I expect they will turn the other stories into animated films as well...

I recommend this to anyone who knows and loves The Gruffalo book.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Fun but for little kids (2-3), 24. März 2010
Rezension bezieht sich auf: Pants (Taschenbuch)

There were so many good reviews for this book elsewhere that I got it for my four-year old. But he's too old for this. Maybe if he were to read it with friends, they would laugh about it.

It's really just a list of different kinds of pants written in rhyme.

I got the book+CD. It's read aloud with page turns once, then sung in different styles: rock, folk, reggae, disco... For the video review I chose the rock version and it sounds good but it's short and gets repetitive.

I suppose younger children would find it funny, though, so have a look at the video - you'll see what the pages look like (very simple, little text) and you can decide for yourself.

5.0 von 5 Sternen An excellent introduction to art, 24. März 2010
Rezension bezieht sich auf: Famous Paintings (Gebundene Ausgabe)

Wow! This book is fab and I am very pleased that I got it! It's an introduction to art and I got it for my 4-year old but it's so informative yet easy to understand that I am enjoying reading it with him!

It covers 35 of the most famous paintings. For each work of art, there is short background info on the painter, when it was painted and who/what is in the painting. Then there is a paragraph on what makes it so unique and famous. And another paragraph on the techniques used. There are close-ups and little notes:

e.g. Girl with a Pearl Earring -
"The silky turban was painted using ultramarine blue - an expensive colour made from crushed lapis lazuli, which is a semi-precious stone."
"In close up, you can see that the brilliant shine on the pearl is really a thick smear of white."
"Look out for gleaming highlights on the eyes and lips, which bring the face to life. By contrast, the line of the nose almost disappears in the light."

My son is not as keen on the book as I am but it is possible to get the info into his head. At a friend's house we happened to see a poster of Gustav Klimt's The Kiss. So of course I had to test him. I asked him what the painting was called and he got it right! (ok, it's one of the easier ones but still, he's only four!)

This will be a good reference book for years to come. Get it!

There are three books in this one: the ABC word book, funniest storybook ever and what do people do all day?

My son has had this since he was 2 and it is still a firm favourite (now 4). The drawings really are so 'busy' that there is much to discover every time we open the book. There are enough dangerous situations (accidents, thieves) to keep my I-love-scary-stuff son interested.

He can 'read' alone now and he often reaches for this book. We have it in hardback and it is still in perfect condition!
