Debian Gnu/Linux: Guide to Installation and Usage
Debian Gnu/Linux: Guide to Installation and Usage

4.0 von 5 Sternen Great way to get started with Debian, 21. April 2000
New Riders is an upstart publisher of technical books, and their creation are cut above the rest, and of about the same quality of writing, and editorial level as O'Reilly books. This book is a very nice book and CD combo, which will get you started with the free, and volunteer maintained distribution of Linux. Debian is especially notable for its package system, which allows easy, and seemless installation of new packages, or update of already installed ones over the network, and internet. (So you get the freshest possible versions from the debian site, or its mirrors.) This book not only describes all that is necessary to make a competent, and well tought out installation of Debian Linux system on your PC, but also gives enough basic usage instructions to allow new users to get up and running, and to be able to get around. Highly advised if you need a good introduction to Linux, or if you want a distribution, with good installation manual.

My Penitente Land: Reflections on Spanish New Mexico
My Penitente Land: Reflections on Spanish New Mexico

5.0 von 5 Sternen Tour de force of the southwestern landscape, 19. April 2000
Fray Angelico Chavez takes us on a tour de force ride through the landscape of the Southwest and especially of New Mexico. This is a magical romp through history of the New World as pertaining to the New Mexico, which is the land, where Fray Angelico Chavez feels at home in. This is a fictionalized historical account, which seems fantastic at time, and it is very addictive read, considering that it deals with history, but does so in very entertaining, and magnetic way. Anyone interested in the Southwest should read this book as it will enlighten, and educate. It contains classical, biblical, and native american allusions, references, and influences. The brethen of Don Quixote also make appearance, and seem very much at home in the strange landscape of the new world. Penitentes walk through bearing their crosses. Read it, and you will never look at the Southwest in quite the same way again.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Heywood's masterpiece, 19. April 2000
Rezension bezieht sich auf: A Woman Killed with Kindness (Taschenbuch)
Heywood was a very prolific contemporary of Shakespeare. This play is one of his best, and is quite often revived for performance over in the British Isles. It is an intriguing story of love, friendship, hate, disloyalty, and treachery. Heywood skillfully walks us through the emotions, and there are few surprises lurking in the text, as not everything happens as we expect, and the price of honor turns out to be high, but not higher then of love. As is the custom of Elizabethean drama we have a main plot, and we also have a subplot, which serves to highlight the main plot. These two are complimentary, and highlight each others failings very nicely. When characters of the main plot make the wrong choices, the sub plot shows us the right choice in a similar situation, and thus the play is doubly effective. Highly recommended to see that there were other great playwrights besides Shakespeare in the Elizabethean drama, and that they are only unknown today, because Shakespeare was such a giant, that he overshadows, even very competent writers, who would have shinned brightly in any other period.

5.0 von 5 Sternen This will blow you away, and your preconceptions as well., 25. August 1999
This is a collection of some of the most unorthodox short stories even by the standards of science fiction. One can never tell where these will take us, and even then we are surprised at the results. Reading this will change everything, because afterwards very few things will seem weird. Many of these are tour de force of writting to show of the fact that the author could get away with something, that would be considered bad in writting of lesser carliber, but Bester's power-writting simply cuts through the rules, and gives us some truly out-of-this-world stories, which overpower the reader. In some it is the idea that is the main thing, and elsewhere it is the presentation, which is allpowerful, but each and every time we are left surprised, amazed by the end result. Some of these could be called parodies of classical sciece fiction cliches. (Besides Bester invented some things, that has become cliches since, and yet in his prose they are still powerful, and not cliched at all.) Some are funny, and some are sad, and most are weird, but they are all memorable.

5.0 von 5 Sternen At its time this changed the direction of SF field ..., 25. August 1999
Rezension bezieht sich auf: The Demolished Man (Vintage) (Taschenbuch)
This is simply a must read for any serious reader of science fiction. It changed the way SpecFic was written, and what it tended to deal with. The subject matter was decades ahead of the field of the time, and so to this day it stays current. It might not be as "slick" as some other cyber-punk novels, but Bester wrote this 30 years before cyber-punk was even named, and so this fast paced adventure full of twists, and surprises still fills the bill. Everyone should read this book, if they want to understand where any writer since Bester is coming from, since this book influenced everyone since, and set the mark for others to best. It took some time, but it has been achieved, but there is still place for this book. You can't predict what will happen next, and the ending will really leave you thinking. All in all this is very interesting book. So enjoy, because after you finish it you won't look at SF in the same way. (Especially when you realize when this was written.)
