4.0 von 5 Sternen "Wonka" Whips "Wizard", 25. August 2003
The four star review is mainly for "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory," as I am one who believes that" "The Wizard of Oz" is quite overrated. Because I am in the minority there, I will focus mainly on the first movie. Gene Wilder is absolutely perfect in "Willy Wonka." He plays the mad genius who is able to administer the perfect justice for the crimes of the children. The film presents a magical world in which goodness is rewarded, and it does so with terrific, biting edgy humor. If one were to get this set, I would urge you to take a closer look at this film, because it is the better of the two.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Wonderfully Hilarious Romantic Comedy, 25. August 2003
Cary Grant, Myrna Loy, and Shirley Temple all sparkle in this delightful film. In it, Temple plays a student at a local High School at which Grant is a guest lecturer. Miss Temple, of course, falls in love. What she doesn't know is that her sister, played by Myrna Loy, who is a judge, just had a bit of a legal scuffle with him. When another misunderstanding occurs between adult Grant and Minor Temple, Big Sister explodes and at firs wants to lock Grant up and throw away the key. However, because Temple has such a large crush, she deciedes to let him go on the condition that he start a "normal" relationship with Little Sister, with the hope that Little Sister will get over the crush and start hanging out with people her own age. Of course, at the end, Grant and Loy get together, but in between there are some brilliant comedic bits that make this film one of the more entertaining ones to be seen.

4.0 von 5 Sternen The One That Started It All, 25. August 2003
The very first in the "Road" series, "The Road to Singapore," is a wonderful start to this adventure. If you have seen none of these movies, but would like to see them, I suggest you start in the order they were made. Therefore, this one would come first. In this one, Bing and Bob play Josh and Ace, who both run away from the messes they have created and go to a little island called Kaigoon, where they meet a showgirl, Mima, played by Dorothy Lamour. The three of them soon all live in the same house and scramble to make ends meet, while Josh's family tracks him down and pressures him to come back home. This film does not have as many laughs as most of the others, but in an odd way it helps to make this a more complete film. Bob Hope gives some of his better dramatic efforts in htis film, largely because the film is trying to go for something a little more than a laugh. This film is far from great, but it is highly entertaining and is perhaps the most underrated of all the "Road" movies.

3.0 von 5 Sternen Lesser "Road" Film Still Funny, 25. August 2003
The sixth "Road" film in the series of seven, and the only one to be filmed in color, "The Road to Bali," made in 1952 has an aged, dated feel that none of the other "Road" films which preceeded it have. In it, Bing and Bob, who are working their Vaudeville act in Austrailia, find that they must leave in a hurry to avoid marriying a local with whim both had had a fling. When they stumble their way onto a local island, they meet Princess Dorothy Lamour and her evil cousin. Hope and Crosby then do some Deep Sea Diving to find some elusive treasure. Along the way, they get rid of the bad guys, sing a few songs, and, of course, one of them get Dottie. The film is bland and the print from which the video is made is a little sketchy in spots, but if you are a fan of these films and have not yet seen this one, you might as well go ahead.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Solid Hepburn-Tracy Flick, 25. August 2003
In "Pat and Mike," Spencer Tracy plays a sports agent who notices the "talent" of one Katherine Hepburn. Hepburn plays a rather versatile sports figure, who is adept at tennis golf, and a couple of other sports which would be considered "chirce." But as the relationship between the two rises and falls, her ability to be successful in her exploits rises an falls as well. This is not one of the best from these two giants, but it is entertaining and, indeed, it is better than many comedies of that day or of this one.

3.0 von 5 Sternen A Reasonbly Entertaining Film, 25. August 2003
Not to be confused with the 1931 Marx Brothers film of the same name, "Monkey Business," starring Cary Grant, Ginger Rogers and Marilyn Monroe is a film which has some nice little screwball scenes although the film, due to the obligations that come with the script, can be somewhat immature. It would be far too rediculous to attempt to explain it all, but Grant and Rogers are married. He is a scientist working on a youth enhancing formula, and due to his lab experiments involving monkeys, there is a mishap which sparks all of the rest of the film. If you are a fan of Cary Grant this should be worth watching. If you are a fan of great comedy, look for something else.

4.0 von 5 Sternen A Lovely, Sophisticated Romantic Comedy, 25. August 2003
Rezension bezieht sich auf: Holiday [VHS] (Videokassette)
Cary Grant and Katharine Hepburn made four films together in the late 1930's early 1940's. The fact that "Holiday" would, in my opinion, place third on that list behind "The Philadelphia Story" and "Bringing Up Baby" and ahead only of "Sylvia Scarlett" does not diminsh the quality of this film. Cary Grant plays a man engaged to a woman who has a brother and a sister, both of whom are highly eccentric. The ideas and ideals of Grant seem from the very beginning to match those of the sister, played by Katherine Hepburn, and will of course lead to the inevetible conclusion. The film at times overreaches and becomes a little bit esoteric, but overall is a highly entertaining and thoughtful film.

4.0 von 5 Sternen 4 Stars for "Friday", 25. August 2003
My advice for anyone looking at this set is to disregard "Penny Serenade" and "Amazing Adventure" and look for a copy of "His Girl Friday" and pocket the rest of the money. "Penny Serenade" and "Amazing Adventure" are reasonably good movies, but they fail, in my opinion, to produce the magic that so many Cary Grant films posess. So, unless you feel that you have to have every film Cary Grant ever made, I would suggest that you go after "His Girl Friday" by itself, because it is definitely an exceptional film, even by Cary Grant's standards.

3.0 von 5 Sternen Cult Classic Not Bogart's Best, 25. August 2003
The legendary production difficulties associated with "Beat the Davil" reflect the highly disorganized feel of this film. Bogart leads a gang of a few men and a couple of women in a plot that is somewhat subject to loss of memory. While one can remember the faces, one can hardly remember what their names were, nor what was said during the movie, even though one may not have found it boring. In short, this film stands as memorable only because of its ability to be forgotten by all of those who do not count themselves as Bogart devotees. If you're looking for a good Bogart comedy, my suggestion is to look elsewhere.

5.0 von 5 Sternen A Brilliant, Terrifying Spine Tingler, 23. August 2003
There are not many films which have such simplicity, and yet serve to be so incredibly horrifying as "Wait Until Dark." In it, Audrey Hepburn gives a marvelous performance as Susy Hendrix, a woman who was recently blinded in an accident. She is just beginning to get used to her new life with her new husband when she is caught in the crossfire of a misunderstanding between some drug smugglers. Somehow, a child's play doll which was used to carry illegal narcotics had been misplaced and found its way into the Hendrix home. As a result, the people involved put on an elaborate "display" for Ms. Hendrix, hoping to get the doll back without incriminating themselves. When Susy begins to suspect that they are lying to her, the situation becomes potentially fatal for everyone involved. If you enjoy classic suspense movies, you absolutely must see this one.
