5.0 von 5 Sternen Wonderful Wunderlich, 30. Januar 2012
Rezension bezieht sich auf: Electrola-Querschnitte 1960-63 (Audio CD)
Anybody old enough to remember Fritz Wunderlich doesn't need convincing that this was one of THE great 20th-century voices. If he hadn't died at such a ridiculously young age, he might well have become THE voice of the century. In this 7-CD collection we hear him in "Don Giovanni", "Butterfly" and "Bohème" (delicious), but also in the much rarer "Mignon" (a treat!) and the utterly adorable "Martha" (where he finds a congenial partner in Anneliese Rothenberger). If you love opera for the music and not for the stars, it's a must. This was a man who who didn't need anything else but his voice to become immortal. It's a beautiful memento to the time when you didn't need to see an opera to adore the singers. It's magic, pure and simple.

3.0 von 5 Sternen Thai mysteries, 30. Januar 2012
Welcome to the other side of the Mekong River, where we find out that Thailand has a rather impressive collection of not-quite-average inhabitants as well. They are fun (a body-building virginal brother, a definitely not virginal sister that used to be a brother, a mother shuttling easily between sharp as a knife and the first signs of Alzheimer's, a comatose but really quick grandfather and a gay police man), but they can't hold a candle to Dr. Siri and his outlandish crew. The absence of an oppressive and paranoid system is the novel's biggest problem. A basically well-off and stable country doesn't create poignant wit, acerbic irony and absurd administrative loops, nor do its inhabitants writhe in the deadlock grip of despair and hate mingled with love and hope. The heroine Jimm has everythign at her disposal, most importantly one of the world's best hackers, which means that she doesn't have to build her case from the almost-nothings that Dr. Siri did so well with. It's an enjoyable read, yes, but not nearly as memorable as the adventures of her Lao predecessors.

4.0 von 5 Sternen murder à l'anglais, 4. August 2010
A murder mystery in the best tradition of British humour - a coroner who learned "his trade from a couple of charred French textbooks". Dr. Siri and his team are eccentric to the core but still credible. If you like blood & gore and explicit sex and/or violence, you will be severely disappointed. If you enjoy sarcasm, dry humour and a plot where the murder only serves as a vehicle to muse about life, the universe, communism and mankind, then you are right here. The "phibob" excorcism was the only thing I could have done without. The rest of the book was a delightful read.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Bilderflut, 20. Juli 2010
