Well...this is a very nice Dead Set,..IMHO "Steppin' Out, England 72" and "Dicks Picks No.31, 1974" are more intense, but nonetheless, "Sunshine Daydream" has it's moments. The "Golden Age of The Dead" in my books is 1972-76; I experienced them quite often "live" during this period, thus,... I know what I'm talking about; so,... one can say, the door to "The Golden Age" has just swung open as this CD set was recorded. That is why I really DO like it.
This set is made up of three CD's and one DVD in a Digi-Pack. The DVD was produced in 2013 from films and tapes dating back to 1972. The sound (on both the CD's and the DVD) is/are excellent, the musicianship is excellent, but it's too bad the Dead NEVER worked with capable film people. A few album covers were real classics, but for the most part, the Dead always had totally ridiculous, dorky, and just plain embarrassingly BAD visualizations. A lot of the "trippy" sequences of the film look like the graphic artist was Richard Nixon trying to imitate Terry Gilliam. Phil is one of the best bassists of all time but somebody should have told him, "CLOSE YOUR MOUTH when you're on stage !" Standing there with an open mouth looks the opposite of intelligent, and all those filthy little mud-covered hippie brats running around make me want to take a shower. At certain times the cameraman can't make up his mind, if he wants Jerry's finger-work-playing-a-solo in the frame, or the swinging genitals of a naked hippie standing on a pole behind the stage....a tough decision, I must admit, however...maybe I'm just old fashioned, but, when I watch a Dead film I want to see Jerry's solo...when I want to see swinging genitals, I look in my mirror....I don't even need a DVD player for that treat ! I really had to laugh watching this film, ...after all, I was, many times myself, one of those trippy-hippies in the audience at a Dead concert. (Please don't ask which parts of me were swinging back then....or NOW for that matter!)
As I was watching the film I heard my fathers ghost saying, "Don't these people ever bathe?....YUK !!!"
Well....anyway, when the camera happens to drift onto the band... Jerry (in a black t-shirt and jeans...his uniform) is playing an amazing 50's sunburst Strat that sounds like HEAVEN; Phil is playing his Alembic with the 4000 knobs on it and it sounds ASTRONOMICAL, Bob is playing his red ES 335 and he is comping chords at near SUPER-HUMAN levels, Bill is playing a "Butcher Block" Rogers drum set and it is extraordinary to see how well he fills up the sound between the bass and the guitars which often leave a gap as wide as the Grand Canyon, he really IS a JAZZ drummer; and unfortunately, Keith, the piano player, is hardly seen in the film but, his piano playing is like an Ultra Hyper Atomic Glue holding the sound together. Five truly extraordinary and completely unique musicians, playing on a telepathic wave length, taking us from Veneta, Oregon to the edge of the universe and back again, in other words, ....your typical band involved in a typical daydream. (har-dee-har-har.)
The versions of "Dark Star", "Bird Song" and "Sing Me Back Home" (all three on CD AND on the DVD!) are the reasons for the 5 Star rating of this set. These are the BEST versions I've ever heard of these songs,(and I've heard MANY) and worth getting the set for.
All in all, an excellent Dead Set, at a great price, with some absolutely STELLAR highlights. Perfect music for Sunshine Daydreaming about Dirty Old Swinging Hippies......and much much more,.... indeed.

Well done. Prefer these colorized versions to the B/W original series. (Actually, the series was filmed in color, but shown in B/W on television.)
This is an excellent alternative to the out-of-print USA original, limited edition, Disney release.

Always loved this series....still do...and I prefer these fantastically done colorized versions to the B/W originals.
This French Import is an excellent alternative to the original, USA limited edition, which is no longer available.

How wonderful that somebody decided to write a book about Maurice Noble.
Ironic that practically EVERYBODY alive in the Western World knows this mans art and just about NOBODY knows his name.
Hopefully this book will help to change that situation.
A fantastic book about an important 20th Century artist and an in depth look into the mechanics and beauty of animation at its best.
As an art historian....I would rate the artwork of the Golden Age of Warner Brothers Animation (in which Maurice Noble plays a key role) at least a few (if not MANY) notches ABOVE nearly everything hanging in any major art museum these days.

GREAT CD !!!....As good as Led Zeppelin, Cream, the Stones and Jeff Beck covered these songs (and they covered them REAL GOOD !!!)...I actually prefer THESE versions by Willy himself.
To hear Willy Dixon sing the blues is to hear the voice of someone who knows what has been, and what is still going on; who knows what a mess the world is in; who knows he doesn't stand a chance, who knows it's all going down the drain, and who CELEBRATES that knowledge by wailing it all out of his system with the utmost sense of humor and dignity known to mankind.
This is true knowledge of man, Mr. Shakespeare has nothing on Willy D......this is philosophy at its best.
Amazing how GOOD the BLUES can make you feel. It is miraculous.
I can't listen to this without smiling, laughing, dancing, and glowing all over.
Willy should be canonized.
God Bless Willy Dixon, forever and ever. Amen.

The vandals stole the handles but, thank Jesus, they left these tapes lying around!
This is my personal favorite Bob Dylan phase, 1970. I just love that "Lay Lady Lay" type voice he often sang with in this period, and because nearly this entire collection is comprised of studio-outtakes, the sound quality is more or less perfect. When one considers what else was going on in the music world at this time; Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Jethro Tull, Yes, King Crimson, etc., .... then Bob was certainly following his own advice...."Don't follow leaders".
He really seems to have been musically reborn after his motorcycle accident in 1966....he fell deeper and deeper into the Universe of Americana (and he was in REAL deep anyway) and never came back. He's still there. He is more there than America itself....Dylan is a planet unto himself. A planet I prefer to the one called Earth.
Two things really stick out on this collection to me.....
1. his GUITAR.....I just LOVE the way he plays his big old acoustic guitar, WONDERFUL ! ...sounds GREAT! (and David Bromberg and all the other musicians are no slouches either!) and ....
2. His FACE.(the CD comes with a very well made booklet). He really looks like a Jewish Cowboy. Funny that I never associated Bob Dylan with being Jewish (whatever that means). I have the feeling Bob Dylan never associated Bob Dylan with being Jewish (whatever that means too.); but his image just STRONGLY strikes me in that way seeing these photos today. I don't mean it in a positive or negative's just an observation. It's like sometimes being surprised when I look into the mirror these days, and see my father looking back at me.
Well, those are two of my favorite musicians (and human beings) of All Time....Bob Dylan, the Jewish Cowboy....and Jimi Hendrix, the Afro/Native American Gypsy (Jimi also had Cherokee blood). I guess that is what makes America, America; it's in the BLEND; and this collection is REAL Americana, at its absolute best.
So, "jump down a manhole, light yourself a candle, don't wear sandals, try to avoid scandals," and buy this CD !!!

Disney's "Treasure Island" from 1950 is the studio's first venture into (100%) live-action films; and it is GREAT!.....Robert Newton, in his role here as Long John Silver, really defined the way a pirate should look and especially TALK in cinema films!
I personally, prefer this version of "Treasure Island", along with "The Crimson Pirate" with Burt Lancaster and "The Sea Hawk" with Errol Flynn, over "Pirates of the Caribbean"; but whereas Lancaster and Flynn are more swash-buckling in their pirate roles...Newton can be very CREEPY...he could be the insane uncle of the Who's drummer Keith Moon, the way he looks. (Come to think of it...Keith Moon would have made an even better pirate than Keith Richards if he was still around...hmmmmm...too bad.)
And it is such a pleasure to watch action films WITHOUT any digital special effects! (Absolutely amazing how Disney got that parrot to stay on Newtons shoulder through the whole film without mussing his coat!....and thinking of that, I'm glad I wasn't the person who had to clean the set for Hitchcock's "The Birds"!)
This UK DVD has a nice clean picture, good colors, and fine (mono) sound quality. A wonderful (my favorite) film adaption of Robert Louis Stevenson's classic tale.
If ya be a pirate-film lover matey, then buy ye this har film, this be the grand-daddy of em all !!!

This and "Harvest" are my two favorite Neil Young recordings. These two records defined what Country-Rock WAS before the genre got overtaken by Nerdy Righteous Dorks. Great acoustic guitar (!!!),...the music is an interesting mixture of fragility and power.
(And if you like this music....check out K.D. Lang's "Hymns of the 49th Parallel"....her version of this title song equals, at least, the original by Young.)
The remastering sounds fine to me, maybe not quite as good as the original vinyl, but Very Good. A classic recording, nicely polished.
