5.0 von 5 Sternen Serious regular expression magic for the hard-core hacker, 13. April 2000
This book was written with a thoroughness that is only possible when the author loves his subject.
As a long-time UNIX hacker, I thought I knew regular expressions. I mainly bought the book to gain a fuller understanding of the intricacies of Perl regular expressions. I learned that, when it came to REs, I was a rank amateur. Jeffrey Friedl is the master. The Perl chapter alone is worth the price of the book....

5.0 von 5 Sternen You'll want to buy a copy for your manager, 13. April 2000
I had been in the industry as a programmer for ten years before reading this book. As I read it, I saw outlined, in vivid detail, mistakes I'd seen played out over and over again by my own senior management. I continue to wonder why, if Brooks knew this stuff back in '75, people in the industry still can't get it through their heads 25 years later.
Everyone in the software industry should read this book. Management should read it so they can stop making the same mistakes, and designers should read it so they know when a project is doomed and how to find an organization that knows how to face reality.

5.0 von 5 Sternen If you learn by example, this is the book for you., 13. April 2000
Rezension bezieht sich auf: Perl Cookbook (Taschenbuch)
I had a roommate in college who could learn programming languages by reading the language specifications. He took Advanced Algebra as an elective and blew the curve for the math majors. Corey went after the theory in everything. Once he understood the theory, he could extrapolate the applications.
I'm just the opposite. The theory doesn't mean squat to me until I can see a few examples. Give me enough examples, and I can extrapolate the theory.
If you're like me, this book is for you. 733 pages containing 334 examples of how to use Perl to solve virtually any programming problem you can think of. And as you examine the solutions to the various problems, you're introduced to successively more and more advanced Perl programming constructs.
In short, outstanding book.

Ender's Game (Ender Wiggin Saga)
Ender's Game (Ender Wiggin Saga)
von Orson Scott Card
  Taschenbuch
Preis: EUR 5,90

5.0 von 5 Sternen Couldn't put it down, 13. April 2000
This is only the second time I can recall picking up a book and literally not being able to put it down until I finished it. Fortunately, I started it in the early afternoon, so I was only up until 3:30am with it.
Card does an excellent job keeping the reader in suspense. Every time I finished a chapter, I was compelled to start the next one just to find out what they would throw at Ender next, and to see if his brother was a homicidal maniac or not.
I was particularly encouraged to find a good Sci Fi book that I would feel comfortable giving to a young teenager to read. There are no sex scenes, and only mild swearing.
Great book.
